About time Deledio was nominated as a Rising Star
« on: May 16, 2005, 03:11:41 PM »
Brett Deledio stats:

RoundOpponentKicksHBallsDispMarksTacksGoalsBehinds
1Geelong81962
2Hawthorn931251 1
3W.Bulldogs771454 1
4Fremantle66124 1
5St Kilda67132
6Port Adel.881672 1
7Carlton10717421
8Coll'wood671331

He's played every game averaging over 13 possies a week and is consistently contributing as part of our midfield off a wing or flank. Sure he's nowhere near what we are going to expect from him in the future despite showing heaps of talent but I'd like to know of any other first year player with stats anywhere near those of Lids.

Unfortunately, I think being the number 1 draft pick means the kids going to be graded harder than some of the others.

I actually thought he'd get it last week but missed out. Would be surprised if he got it this week which means he is probably a shoe in  :rollin

Deledio tabbed for Rising Star

Sportal for afl.com.au

The no.1 selection at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, Richmond’s Brett Deledio, has won the round eight nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star medal.

The 18 year old from Kyabram has played all eight of the Tigers matches to date, averaging 13 touches and four marks in a side that has won already won six matches.

Deledio is fast, skilful and a terrific mark, and has slotted in nicely to the Tiger line-up across half-back.

He was named an All-Australian after the 2004 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. In 2003, he shared the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the best player in division one at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.

I would have prefered it if he got the award in the Port game where he was a bit more effective.

Doesn’t always make sense how this thing works.  I think consistency plays a part though.

Well done to Brett. :thumbsup  A deserved nomination for his efforts to now.

Who knows? It seems that they are more likely to award it for one performance, meaning that 'flash in the pan' type players are more likely to win it.

Well done Bretty Deledio.

And well done to WP, your reverse psycology on your own predictions is impressive. Make sure you always tell me which horses you back WP, I'll make sure I never back them!

Maybe they gave it to him for putting up with both Cloke brothers laying into him. :lol

Seriously, about time he was awarded this. :thumbsup

They seem to chop and change depending on the round. If there's a "one-game wonder" for the week then they seem to go for that; if not then they pick on consistency. There wasn't really any stand out youngsters this week (Andrew Lovett for the Dons might have been close) so they've obvious gone for the consistency of Lids.

Congratulations Brett. Well deserved   :cheers  :thumbsup

Lovett is 22, so too old for rising star nomination (?).

Well done Brett, now to find him a better nickname than 'Lids'

No you're right Jake. Just checked he's too old at 22. My mistake  :).

That’s what I thought too MT, but when Marty McGrath kicked 5 ? goals on debut, a couple of years ago, he never got a look in.  At the time, something about consistency was mentioned.  Yet other players who have had those ‘flash in the pan’ games, that DC mentioned, have been nominated.

Brent Hartigan had to wait until Round 22 last year to get nominated.  By then, he’d played 19 games and been in our best on a few occasions, or at least stood up in a struggling team.  I thought he deserved a nomination before Round 22, but that’s just me I guess.

I suppose the main thing is that those who deserve it are nominated at some stage through a season.

Agree TS. As long as those who deserve it get eventually nominated then that's the main thing. When picking the winner at the end of the year then consistency would be the main criteria you would think. Deledio would be in for a good show if he can play every game and keep up and continually improve with every game.

Just an aside MT,

Lovett if eligible would have won it this week for sure.

He won that game for the Bummers on the weekend. Oh and Z the Disco king went alright for them to.
