ABC went early that Neeld had been sacked but it seems they were wrong. Melbourne are denying it while other news agencies are saying Neeld is safe for now.

7NewsMelbourne ‏- UPDATE: @Stevo7AFL reports Mark Neeld 'safe for now' as @melbournefc coach. Story with link to come.

@SENNews - Update from @melbournefc - Mark Neeld has not been sacked and Peter Jackson will stay on as CEO until the end of 2014.

AFL Online ‏- Neeld survives to coach another day despite plenty of journos claiming he would be sacked today. Good decision by the board IMO.

From Melbourne's president:

In today’s Board meeting Peter Jackson presented his early recommendations for our Club following his first month in the role of CEO.  Peter Jackson has been asked by the Board to examine every aspect of the Club and today he outlined a number of changes he believes are required to take our Club forward. In coming weeks and months we will seek to change the structure of the Football Department as well as a number of other aspects of our business.

Today, as with all Board Meetings, there was a presentation from the Football Department from Mark Neeld, Neil Craig, Todd Viney and Josh Mahoney.  Our on-field performances have not met expectations this year and everyone in the Football Department continues to face ongoing assessment in their roles as do those employed in other areas of the Club.  The Club will make no further comment at this time, in relation to the senior coach position.

We are extremely pleased to announce today that following the Board’s request to Peter Jackson to extend his tenure as CEO beyond the initial 6 month contract, he has agreed to stay in the role of CEO until at least the end of 2014.

I will continue to provide you with regular updates.

Don McLardy

Lyon arguing on footy classified that it would be wrong for the board to of already stamped his papers and not told him because he could still turn things around in the 2nd half of the season and could even win games.

They have a few players that we could use;

Hogan, Viney, Trengrove, Toumpas, Grimes, Frawley. Its not a list devoid of talent.

If the AFL gives them handouts in regards to draft picks its beyond a joke.

Everyone is expecting them to get flogged this weekend. I don't know why the board would backflip on its decision from earlier this week to sacking him on Tuesday next week.

Won't be disappointed this way.

Reckon he's taken the Pies to cover the line so needs the Dees to get flogged or he might not have a house to sleep in Monday night.  :shh

Rodney Eade would be a good appointment by the demon's to the coaching position. He got alot out of the bulldogs who didn't have alot of money.

Quote
A NEW-LOOK Melbourne football department could be headed by experienced AFL administrator Matthew Drain.

The Australian understands Drain has been approached by new Demons chief executive Peter Jackson to head football at the struggling club, which is expected to make several key football department changes, including the replacement of senior coach Mark Neeld a year ahead of the expiration of his contract.

Drain, 44, has previously worked for Essendon, the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda at the top end, as either general manager of football operations, list manager or high-performance manager.

He worked alongside Kevin Sheedy at Windy Hill between 1999 and 2002 when Jackson was Bombers chief executive.

Jackson did not return calls from The Australian last night.

Drain, a former Victorian Sheffield Shield squad member, left Essendon to become high-performance manager of Cricket Australia, where he oversaw the development of a centre of excellence. Having played first-grade cricket for 13 years, he was also head coach of the Australian women's cricket team.

After leaving St Kilda several years ago, Drain sought a career change away from elite sport, working in law enforcement.

Should he accept the position with Melbourne, he would be ideally placed to renew his association with Rodney Eade, who is likely to be sounded out for the senior coaching role from next season.

Eade is currently a coaching strategist under Nathan Buckley at Collingwood, a position he has held since he coached the Bulldogs for seven years until the end of the 2011 season.

Drain and Eade had a close working relationship at the Whitten Oval for several years until Drain moved to St Kilda in 2008.

It is believed that Melbourne's current preference is to appoint a coach with previous experience at the elite level rather than a younger person who is presently an assistant coach at another club.
