Mark Williams has a ‘fire in his belly' to take on the coaching job at Melbourne

    Andrew Capel
    From: The Adelaide Advertiser
    June 20, 2013

MARK Williams wants the Melbourne job and would be an even better coach with the Demons than he was at Port Adelaide.

That's the opinion of the man who knows him best, his younger brother and triple Port Magpies premiership coach Stephen Williams.

Stephen spent last weekend with Mark in Melbourne and said "the fire in his belly" to coach again is as strong as ever.

"His appetite for everything football is still huge and there's no doubt he wants to be a senior coach again," said Stephen.

"He'd be an ideal fit at Melbourne because it's gone down the untried youth path and failed now it needs an experienced coach with a strong track record.

"Mark has that, he's great at working with young players and I'm convinced he'd do an excellent job at Melbourne if he was given the chance."

Stephen said Mark has "unfinished business" after his 12-year stint at the Power, which included the club's only premiership in 2004, ended "before he wanted it to" midway through 2010.

He said Mark was refreshed after nearly three years out of the head coaching box and would be a better coach than he was at Port after being as assistant coach at GWS in 2011 and 2012 and now Richmond, where he has helped spark the career of exciting young midfielder Dustin Martin.

"He's certainly recharged and would love a crack at getting Melbourne back on track," said Stephen.

"He has a proven track record of developing young players, which the Demons have a lot of, and in my opinion he is better than a lot of current AFL coaches.

"I see and listen to a lot of coaches now and I don't think they've got anything on Mark.

"He's certainly very innovative and he knows how to produce and get the best out of his players."

Williams is the bookies' early favourite for the Melbourne job, which was vacated on Monday when Mark Neeld was sacked.

Former Crows coach Neil Craig has been installed as caretaker coach for the rest of the season and has indicated he is interested on winning the job on a full-time basis.

Stephen said Mark was enjoying his time as development coach at Richmond, which smashed Adelaide on Saturday to move into the top eight.

But he said he felt underused at Tigerland.

"He's enjoying it there but he's certainly up for a lot more than that," Stephen said.

Stephen admitted the pressure took its toll on Mark at the end of his Port reign, where he led the club to the finals in seven his 12 years in charge, including three minor premierships, two grand finals and one flag.

But he said he is ready to be a senior coach again.

"There is a lot of pressure on the head coach of an AFL club but Mark has recharged his batteries and is ready to go again," Stephen said.

"I'm sure he would love to get another senior coaching job and get the chance to show everyone what he could do.

"He's got a terrific record and I'm sure he could help turn Melbourne around if he was given the opportunity."

aye, although I do recall one silly poster telling me to stop thinking about the premiership he won at port, he is now a dud and that we dont need him when it was first aired that we were after him.

Didn't say what the fire in the belly actually was. Could have been some week old Houli tabouli.

Seems some poor desperate and deluded Melbourne fans are trying to spread a rumour that getting Chocco as coach will then mean Dusty will join him over there  :stupid :facepalm.
