Mature-aged recruit Matt Thomas is almost assured of joining former Blue Shaun Hampson in making his debut for Richmond in the round-one clash on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Ivan Maric is out for at least another four to six weeks and would then need to play in the VFL before being up for senior selection.

The Tigers will also be without last year's best-and-fairest winner Daniel Jackson for round one, meaning they will be without their first-choice tagger for Suns captain Gary Ablett, but will otherwise have a strong side to take on the Suns.

Aaron Edwards, Jake King and Nathan Foley all played in the VFL practice match against Collingwood on Friday in a pointer to the club's improved depth.

Youngster Matt McDonough is also pushing to be part of the round-one side after consistently impressive performances in the pre-season matches.

"We have got tough selection decisions. We have got good depth at the moment," Richardson said.

The Tigers face, on paper at least, a reasonably winnable opening string of matches to the season with Gold Coast away, followed by Carlton, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions.

However, the Gold Coast has previously given the Tigers trouble.

The Tigers lost twice to the Suns in Cairns in sold Richmond home games before they finally prevailed against them last year.

Saturday's game at Metricon Stadium will be the first time Richmond has played "away" to the Suns on the Gold Coast.

Round two, at the MCG, is a rematch of last year's losing final to Carlton.

Dimma said they'll prob rotate three guys on him because they don't have any one bloke that can go with him and you cant stop him anyway

You can restrict him though which is what 16 other clubs try to do. Unfortunately for the Pies, Bucks took it literally and didn't put anyone on him and he had about 500 possies as the Suns gave them a good ol' beating.

I would seriously put Cotch on him, as our leader could really damage him going the other way. Ablett has no defensive skills, always out the back or side looking to be the link player.

Yep, We did that last year or the year before cant recall, but both had about 38 touches, cotch was more influential imo, Also, Lids rotated on and off him too so was definitely a different gameplan to usual

Yep would be happy with that or even Deledio, Lids' pace could be a weapon against Junior

Agree with comment to try and exploit Ablett's perceived lack of defensive skills. Jackson's offensive work last year was very very good against Ablett. Need Cotchin up forward. Believe they will rotate players on him.

Put the Lids on him, he'll give you 100% guaranteed, if Morris had more of an engine, he could do the job....

Suns follow Tigers' template for reaching finals: McKenna
Michael Whiting

GOLD Coast has used Richmond as a measuring stick of improvement since coming into the AFL, and is hoping to continue the Tigers' nightmare run in Queensland when they meet in round one on Saturday night.

Since entering the competition in 2011, the Suns have won two of three matches against Richmond, both in Cairns, which is their best record against any team.

And now they want to follow Richmond's lead of making the finals, after the Tigers broke a long drought to finish in the top eight last season.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna says he has closely monitored the model used by Tigers coach Damien Hardwick since he took the reigns in 2009.

The Suns won eight games to finish 13th last season and are hopeful of another big jump this year.

"They're one or two years ahead of us," McKenna said of Richmond.

"Damien came in as coach and stripped back the list. He's injected through the draft and trading players in.

"We don't have the 100 years of tradition like they've got … but we track them and follow them and we know they're just ahead of us on the curve.

"It's a great measure of us when we play them and I think our recent history against Richmond, it proves that."

McKenna said he had been impressed by the Tigers' pre-season form and expected them to be hungry after a stuff finals exit last season.

"I think they've got some bad experiences of coming up to Queensland as well - I know it's not Cairns, but it's Metricon, and we want to make sure those nightmares continue," he said.

Gold Coast is likely to give a debut to three players, with young defenders Sean Lemmens and Clay Cameron set to join highly touted teenager Jack Martin as first gamers.

The news on stuff Rory Thompson is not so good, with McKenna saying he was "a long shot" to play after a pre-season interrupted by hip surgery and illness.

"If we want to make the finals we have to improve 50 per cent - eight wins to 12 - it's simple maths," McKenna said.

"Our output has to go up accordingly. If we're able to maintain the rage for longer, you win more games, you get yourselves in the finals.

"After four pre-seasons we're physically ready to rumble in the jungle, but mentally is our great challenge. That's part of our growth, that's part of the growth of our football club."

We might have 100 years of tradition but we definitely don't have a list with so many top 10 draft choices that it makes your head spin Guy! :wallywink
