February 19, 2014FOOTBALL’S return to Punt Road Oval will only be witnessed by 2100 as Richmond rush to prepare the ground for a full season of VFL games.
The Tigers will play Essendon in a practice game next Friday, the first game at the venue in 50 years, but capacity has been reduced as works continue on the main grandstand.
Tickets for the game go on sale at Ticketmaster from 9am with all proceeds directed to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.
Works to bring the ground up to standard for the VFL season, including a $1 million refurbishment of the Jack Dyer Stand, are ongoing.
The Tigers’ stand-alone VFL side will play nine matches at Punt Rd Oval this season, seven of them as curtain raisers to Richmond games at the MCG.
The last VFL game at the ground was against Hawthorn in 1964.
“It is fantastic that we’ve been able to get these interface works underway and we expect they will be fully completed in time for our first home VFL game,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said yesterday.
“It will however impact capacity for our practice game against Essendon and it is really important supporters of both clubs are aware of that fact.”
The Richmond-Essendon match kicks off at 1pm on Friday, March 7.
