I just hope that lack of 4 points for that effort doesn't end up more a downer than the boys realising the intensity and hardwork they showed for the last 2.5 quarters is what they need to bring to the table each and every week for 4 quarters. In the past, a gallant loss against a good side was too often followed by a downer and a poor loss to a weaker team. I'll wait until after the Melbourne game before I see today's effort as a potential turning point.

Pros:
* Lids and Rance were massive ins and they showed how much we missed them. Lids for his line breaking and Rance for his intercepts.
* The up and coming 2nd tierers - Conca, Vlastuin and Ellis - had good games especially Reece.
* Astbury grabbed another scalp. That's Cloke, Roughead and Hawkings in the past month.
* Team defensive structures held up today. It was only when there were dumb schoolboy errors did we cough up soft goals.
* Spread and run from midway through the 2nd onwards was very good. We are far more deadly when we play long and direct quickly.
* Kicked the first goal of the 3rd qtr for the first time in a long while. We actually came out after half-time ready to go again at the intensity required.

Cons:
* You can't give any opposition, let alone Geelong, a 6 goal start and expect to win. Our first quarters have been ordinary all year and today's was just as dreadful. We were non-competitive for the first 40 mins. Not good enough and not AFL standard and clearly so based on the effort we then found for the rest of the game.
* We tried to play dry possession footy, which we obviously had practised midweek, for a quarter and a half in the wet which was just dumb, dumb, dumb.
* 6 goals to Geelong directly from our turnovers (they only kicked 11 in total). Most of those turnovers from dumb schoolboy errors. That goal just before half-time in the end proved so costly.
* Geelong had 10 more scoring shots but missed a few which kept us in the game one the scoreboard. You can't rely on that again. If we are honest we were outclassed early on and again in the last which got them across the line.
* Our forward line is still dysfunctional and kicks inside forward 50 are still too much pray and hope.
* Still too many needless 1m backward handballs when kicking the pill was the better option.
* Still too many kicks under no physical pressure that miss open targets. Not good enough at this level.
* Wet weather games which involved more contested footy really show up those players who don't like going when it's their turn to go.

I hate the fact we lost but can't question the effort today. Much better than the dribble we have been dished up the last coupe of weeks which was deplorable. We were competitive for most part of the day which was pleasing. A coupe of ins and outs next week and the team will be better for it.  Still one too many spuds in the team for my liking.

I'm sure that there are a few who are relieved we didn't win today. Hope your pumped fellas.

Ah the apologists the type of people who get shortchanged at the supermarket and with their kids with them start abusing the 15 yr old check out kid and run to a current affair but when it comes the apathy of a footy club, well then that's a different story. High moral ground. Think of the children.

I' m gutted we lost. I'm gutted we played so poorly for 45 minutes yet for the other 75 we kicked 12-2-74 to 6-9-45 and went under by 5 points. Still thinking how we lost today and the same old story of the tape with the Dogs game. Could be 4-3 playing crap footy but instead we are 2-5. For me that is unacceptable but hey each to their own.

That second half today just like the second half against the Dogs have been the best 4 quarters of footy we have played all year and we lost both games. Wasteful and terrible.

Not a bad effort today. Even thought Grigg did a pretty good job.
We are clearly not up to it so it was nice to at least see a bit of fight and even a bit of flair.

Rance would have to be just about our most important player. Things just seem to happen when he is involved.

Did anyone else think the umpiring was a little one sided? I just thought there was a fair few times we tackled them after they had had plenty of time to dispose of the footy only to be called a ball up.

Miles would have been pretty handy today  :whistle Not sure why we didn't pick him??

Yep, today we showed why many fans have been so disappointed and angry at our performances in the first 6 rounds of the season. We can play so much better than we've shown and hopefully we use today as a springboard to play hard honest aggressive footy for the rest of the season.

One thing that disappointed me in the final qtr was once Selwood went off, Lids no longer manned him, would have been a great test of his concentration to see if he could've have continued to stop him. Lids needs those types of roles, hes as gifted as anyone in the comp, just cruises a bit too much, needs the challenge of playing on the best to show he is amongst them.

Conca was brilliant today, clean, sure handed(where were the fumbles? :)) Ellis and Floss also stood up. Rance was massive, defence looks much better with him in it, Astbury was again very good - love seeing the angst and anger he has when his direct opponent takes a mark on him, gets deadest dirty on himself.  :lol Cotchin worked his way through a really tough tag and had an impact. Lids was all class

I don't mean to be disrespectful but Im glad newman did his calf, that's the only way we'll see him out of the side.  Bring in Griff for Azza, Lennon for Newman and Miles for Gordon and petard for Grigg. I haven't been a fan of petterd but he responded exactly how you want to see players respond to being dropped and deserves a spot in the side ahead of a few.

Best game from Morris in a while too, forget about rebounding and just play lockdown.

Yep that evokes exactly what we are thinking. :thumbsup

Was lost for words when I saw we led the frees count 19-13 BT.

The ones they give to them seem to be more important and influential to scores than the ones they give to us. That one against Rance was just terrible adjudication.

That one against Cotch for supposedly sliding into an opponents legs was a disgrace. He was the only one gong for the ball, got the thing and got pinged

Perplexing to say the least

And that one against Rance, the legitimate spoil was disgraceful
