I worded it poorly, but essentially I meant to say it's the same thing except we are paying overs

I don't get why people are so intent on getting a free agent. Is it to look like you're up with the pack? Posters say they are sick of moneyball and topping up players when we are "a middling team who are getting ahead of themselves" but then are desperate for us to get a free agent just because we can.
well i was thinking of frawley who would bolster our defense regardless of what people think.
imo there will be plenty of players let go come seasons end who will improve us even in the short term.to not be thinking about a free agent is head in the sand stuff.
The good teams keep doing it and some on here want to sit on their hands and hope for the best. Our best (at the draft or in development) hasn't been good enough for over 30 years, it's time we got back into the game.
If you don't think Frawley would a B+/A grade defender in a good side then you may as well take up chess.
And for those who bring up Moneyball, it's not even close to the same thing!
And worse still, those who think you don't have to pay overs for any FA is just plain kidding themselves. You pay overs because you get them for free!!  :banghead

Sorry but how is paying overs in the free agent market for the sake of getting an older player not moneyball? Frawley would be a good get but if he was to go somewhere else and we didn't get him people would be straight onto Hardwick for not being active in free agency)

Huh?

The concept of moneyball is to acquire cheap players with serious deficiencies and use them to their singular/minimal strengths.

IE: Matt Thomas as a wrecking ball in the mid.

Chasing Frawley would be moneyball. Nor advisable IMO.
How is chasing/getting  Frawley Moneyball? You said it yourself, "cheap players with serious deficiencies"
I know he has been no star since his All Australian year but The Melbourne FC have a fair bit to do with that. Take a look at Rivers now at Geelong, a very good and reliable KPD when out of the rat hole.

We would have to pay overs for him so that cannot be Moneyball.

As I said in another post, you pay overs because they are basically a free player in term of getting them to your club. No trading or drafting needed to acquire them.

Just looking around at players from clubs who might be on the fringe. Taylor Hunt's contract talks were put on hold a month ago and I can't find anything to suggest otherwise since. Would be a massive upgrade.

would love to have a crack at tomlinson or jaksch. but they arent f/a's and we would have to offer something decent up for em in terms of players or picks.
without a doubt frawley would address a need and add immediate quality and depth to an area that lacks in both.

garlett has to be worth a go as well. when was the last time we had a consistent 40 plus sml  goal kicker.

I would be thrilled with Tomlinson. Shiel too.

Would def have a shot at Garlett.

But would you be happy to pay $600-800k for Frawley?

Stuff Frawley. For the coin he wants you would hope to be buying a finals hardened stopper you can back in clutch moments. Would rather try and crowbar someone in their early 20s from GWS or somewhere and someone on the fringe who wouldn't cost the world but would be an upgrade on someone in our side e.g Hunt from Geelong.

I'm expecting Tomlinson from GWS, Hunt from Geelong to be Richmond players in 2015. Don't Know about Jaksch I'd like to see us try but we may not have enough currency to do everything. Rumours Rumours .....

We all hear lots of stuff. I would be surprised if we aren't up to our eyeballs in chasing Tomlinson and Hunt.

Mentioned on the coverage over the weekend that Hunt is after a punting job in the NFL.
Good on him, big BIG money for a past-it AFL player.

Isn't that Josh Hunt from GWS?  I think the Hunt being discussed is Taylor Hunt from Geelong?

I'd think we'd have to give up a grimes or astbury for a top out of contract gws kid. Then you get frawley for nothing to cover the loss. Our first rounder for shiel and grab garlett and I'd be happy with that.
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
