AL PATON’S FORECAST:
Another untimely injury to David Astbury — this time standing on a stingray — has solved one dilemma for Damien Hardwick with Jake Batchelor now set to take the third key defender spot. At the other end Ty Vickery might miss out in favour of Ben Griffiths. The main area for debate in match committee will be the small forward role. Steve Morris was trialled during the pre-season with mixed results and Nathan Gordon, Sam Lloyd and possibly Chris Knights are also in contention. Morris might get the defensive forward job on Chris Yarran while any of the others could be the sub. Taylor Hunt is set to make his Richmond debut and Kane Lambert is right in the frame after promotion from the rookie list. Expect him to at least make the 25.

SUMMARY
These arch rivals always draw a big crowd in the season opener and this should be no exception after an extended build-up due to cricket's World Cup. Of their seven opening round clashes since 2007, the Blues have won five, although the Tigers held on to win the last one in 2013 by five points. During this pre-season rival captains Marc Murphy and Trent Cotchin have had limited preparations due to injury concerns. Carlton has shown more attacking flair in the NAB Challenge, with Chris Yarran shaping as a key player on Thursday night. Richmond will be keen to kick off on a winning note after last year's elimination final drubbing.

1. The big difference between these clubs' playing style last season was handball. Richmond ranked fifth for handballs and Carlton was 18th, averaging only 163 a game.

2. Since 2009 the Blues have dominated against the Tigers. It is 10 wins to two in Carlton's favour.

3. Only Port Adelaide ran and carried the ball more in 2014 than Carlton. The Blues were ranked second for running bounces and Richmond 12th. Chris Yarran had 67, which ranked him second.

4. These clubs have clashed 213 times and Carlton holds a clear advantage, winning 125 games to 86. There have been two draws.

5. In 2014, these clubs were ranked first and second for free kicks. Richmond averaged 20 a game and Carlton was next with 18.

6. These two clubs have only one player between them ranked in the top 50 of the Official AFL Player Ratings - Carlton captain Marc Murphy is at No. 30. The highest Tiger is Brett Deledio at No. 54.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Dale Thomas. He is in much better physical shape as he enters his second season with the Blues and they would be expecting greater return on their investment. Despite having limited game-time during the NAB Challenge, the former Magpie is likely to play a more attacking role this season.
