The Baromater - Round 23
Herald-Sun
August 26, 2014

RICHMOND

ON THE BLOCK: Ben Lennon seems a certain omission after starting as the sub for the second week in a row. Nathan Gordon covered plenty of ground but had little impact (apart from one spectacular mark). Chris Newman was subbed off and had ice on his leg on the bench but Damien Hardwick said it was just to get him through the game — back him in to start against the Swans.

ON THE CUSP: Dustin Martin is set to return after Richmond took the conservative approach with the young star experiencing hamstring soreness. Dan Jackson played his second game in the VFL and although he didn’t dominate (16 disposals and a goal), he’ll be very handy against Sydney’s big-bodied midfield. Sam Lloyd (25 disposals, three goals) was the standout as Richmond’s VFL side went down to Footcray in a thriller, and David Astbury got through his first game back from a knee injury. The big question mark is Ty Vickery. He is available after a four-match suspension and Hardwick says he has trained the house down, but does he get back in? Ben Griffiths has been good in his spot but the Tigers are a chance to play both to stretch Sydney’s defence.

AL PATON’S FORECAST: It all comes down to this. Richmond must beat Sydney to make the finals and will start as underdog, but the Tigers are playing a brand of footy that could trouble the flag favourite. They will also be a lot happier playing the Swans on ANZ Stadium than the SCG. The Rance v Buddy duel will be huge but the Swans have a lot more weapons — can Richmond stop them all? Their record when playing for a top-eight spot in the final round isn’t great (ask Richmond fans about games against Melbourne and Carlton in the mid-90s) — hopefully this time they don’t die wondering.

Hardwick saying Ty has trained the house down is a good indication he will play him I think, seeing how much he loves hime anyway. I still think Ty will maket it!!!!

Dropping Griff would be a bad move for mine.

Both will play imo. Gordan as sub in case we find it doesn't work but otherwise to add the extra run. Lennon will be the only omission.

Jack just saying on SEN that it would be hard for Ty to get selected this week based on the form of the team.....mind games maybe...

I'd take Thomas over Grigg every day twice vs Sydney

Unfortunately, in the eyes of hardwick, it's probably a question of Thomas AND grigg

Thomas is no good but his grunt would be valuable. You get the feeling everyone else has to cover more slack , when one or both of these are playing in the senior side. IMO

Tigers face tough call on Tyrone Vickery

  Michael Gleeson
    The Age

Not for the first time in his career, Richmond has to ask what it does with Tyrone Vickery.

Confronting its final-before-the-finals against Sydney on Saturday night, Richmond has to decide whether to bring Vickery back in after a month of being sidelined due to his silly suspension.

The side has been winning without him, but in the games before he whacked Dean Cox in the nose, Vickery was playing well. The string of wins that began the Tigers' late-season surge to the brink of the finals coincided with Vickery coming back into the team after being dropped and he was playing well again, booting 10 goals in four games.

When he knocked himself out of the side by almost knocking Cox out, Vickery left the door open for Ben Griffiths to come back in as his replacement. Griffiths has since played as well as at any time in his brief AFL career. Griffiths doesn't really deserve to be squeezed out of the side. He is big, a booming kick, and is starting to better understand his presence and the role he needs to play in the team. He has only kicked five goals in those four games but the forward line has operated well and he has held up his end when asked to ruck.

It could be that it is not an either-or choice between the two key forwards and relief rucks, for there is a chance they could play both, but that would be a change of direction from the middle of the year. Richmond made a call on this mid-season when it stopped playing the pair of them together. It might have been coincidental that when Richmond was horrible at the start of the year Vickery and Griffiths were both playing … but then it might not be coincidence at all.

Richmond football manager Dan Richardson said four weeks out of the game was not likely to be an impediment to Vickery returning and so it was only a matter of choice in team selection.

"He has trained hard through the break and we think his fitness is fine but we have an important training session on Thursday to assess all of that," Richardson said. "Training form has a bit of a bearing on selection.

"We have not made a call yet, it will be up to match committee on Thursday afternoon. It is good position to be in to be having to make hard calls at selection at this time of the year."

Former captain Chris Newman was non-committal on Vickery when asked about it on Tuesday, confirming that Vickery had been mounting the most persuasive case he could for a recall, without actually stating whether he thought he should be recalled.

"He's been trying to do that (make up for his suspension) for the past four weeks. He's worked really hard," Newman said. "A lot of the sessions that he's had to do, he looks exhausted after it. He knows that he let us down, he admitted that. He's putting his hand up to definitely be selected. He's doing everything in his powers to be out there with us."

Personally, I hope we play Vickery, Griffiths and Maric. Sydney will most likely have Buddy, Tippett, Goodes and Reid, so we shouldn't worry about being top-heavy. I'd be more worried about going in under-sized and having to worry about covering all those big blokes. Let's put the acid back on them and let them worry about covering our three-pronged attack. The other good thing about having three potential rucks is that Maric (and maybe at times Griffiths and Vickery, just to mix it up) can drop back into the hole and help out our defenders, who are certainly going to have their hands full. So for mine, the changes would be:  :pray

IN: Vickery, Martin
OUT: Lennon, Grigg

PS-We need to hit these blokes HARD from the opening bounce, and let them know from the outset that they're in for a tough day at the office. Then we'll see if they're keen to join in the fight, or if they're in survival mode. If we can't beat ém we need to maim them. Cola-drinking AFL pets.

We might not have to worry about Reid:

When it comes to the Swans, I think they would be nervous about risking Josh Kennedy after he missed only one game with a low-grade left hamstring injury.

If there is any concern at all later in the week, he'll have another week off to be ready for the finals.

A recurrent injury would see him miss 3-4 weeks at best.

Sam Reid missed on the weekend with chronic hip soreness and is probably going to need another week off to be available for the finals.

The Swans subbed Kurt Tippett out of their win over the Western Bulldogs to ice both knees, which is part of his chronic soreness maintenance program.

It was simply smart workload management by the Swans at three-quarter time and I expect he'll be available to play if he's required this weekend against Richmond.

We'll need to lock down on McVeigh and particlularly Malceski. Swans get all their drive from these two off half back and they both push forward and score also.

Out Lennon
In Martin

Tippett rested, then just tell Vickery to break Franklin's jaw in the 1st QTR.

Spot earned.

spot on Dice, like Martin at the crows, McVeigh and Malceski give a huge percentage of their drive. I'd even look at playing Morris as a lockdown fwd on one of them, preferably McVeigh
