Richmond List Manager, Blair Hartley thanked Butler for his time at the Club.

“Dan is a great young man and talented player, and he has been an important contributor to our on-field success,” he said.

“We wish Dan and his family all the best for the future, and he’s always welcome at Richmond.”

Didn't take him long to locate a St.Kilda jumper in Bali...wonder if he packed a Carlton as well:

I'd say he picked up one of those $2 rip offs you can pick up in the Kuta street stalls

SNIP

Let me make this very clear :banghead

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion about players and can post as such. We don't have to agree or like the opinions posted

But the abuse and baiting generated from those opinions will not be tolerated. Either will the egging on of the baiting and / or abuse.

Hence, the SNIP.

Finally keep the fueds off the forum. Stick to the topics without the abuse or baiting. You don't like a poster ignore them it isn't hard

I am not interested in who started it, the finger pointing just give it a bloody rest.  :banghead

Butler explained how he was able to pose for a photo on social media with a St Kilda jumper from the Indonesian holiday island so soon after officially becoming a Saint.

"One of the boys [former Richmond teammate] Jayden Short picked one up from a Bali market for about 10 bucks I think earlier in the day and had it ready for me," Butler laughed.

Butler began contemplating a move from Richmond in the second half of the season as he fell out of favour at Punt Road, with the likes of young guns Sydney Stack and Shai Bolton cementing their spots in the senior team. He almost ended up at Carlton before settling on the Saints.

"I had a meeting with them [Carlton] as well [and] obviously got caught touring the club which wasn't great for me," he quipped. "It got close but in the end it wasn't to be."

Butler insisted Richmond had no issues with him meeting with the Blues during the season.

"I was upfront with them the whole time, they know it's a business as well and those things are going to happen so I didn't hide anything from them," he said.

The premiership forward admitted it was tough to watch the Tigers win their second flag in three years this year and not be a part of it, but he was rapt for the players who were able to taste premiership success for the first time.

"My two housemates Jayden Short and Liam Baker got to experience [a flag] for the first time and that's really what I tried to focus on rather than me getting down in the dumps," he said.

In the end, St Kilda wooed the 23-year-old over to Moorabbin.

"I had a couple of meetings with the list manager and met 'Ratts' [Saints coach Brett Ratten] as well and they were just very welcoming of me and really believed in me and my strengths as a footballer," he said.

Really hope he makes a go of it.

Another 150 games and 200+ goals.

But I have a feeling he might fade :(

Why Richmond Allowed Dan Butler to Depart

WHY RICHMOND ALLOWED STARRING SAINTS FORWARD TO DEPART

BY ANDREW SLEVISON

One of the recruits of the year to date is Dan Butler who is in brilliant form for St Kilda.

The small forward fell down the pecking order at Richmond over the past two years playing just 22 games across 2018 and 2019 despite having kicked 30 goals in the 2017 premiership season.

In seven games for the Saints in 2020, the 24-year-old has kicked 13 goals to sit just two behind the leaders in the Coleman Medal race and his form would undoubtedly have him in All-Australian contention to this point.

The Saints gave up only pick 56 in last year’s draft for the quick and classy crumbing forward with the departure from Punt Road coming as a case of bad timing more than anything else from a Tigers viewpoint.

Asked on SEN Breakfast what goes through his mind when he sees Butler playing so well for the Saints, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick replied with an audible groan accompanied with a laugh, before adding: “Well we sort of knew he was a good player.

“But we really had a great depth of small forwards.

“It wasn’t as if we didn’t want him, he just ran out of contract at the wrong time. We had a great deal of small forwards that were contracted and unfortunately Dan was the guy that wasn’t contracted.

“We’ve got Daniel (Rioli), we’ve got Jason Castagna, we’ve got Shai Bolton, Sydney Stack, all those types. He was the one that was out of contract.

“He’s a wonderful player. He’s got AFL traits that are off the chart. He’d be winning the Saints best and fairest at the moment. Wonderful kid, wonderful family and I still send him a text, ‘Well done’.

“He’s just smashing it which is great for him.”

Butler was held goalless in his first game for his second club all the way back in Round 1 but has kicked two or more in five of the next six games, including three against the Tigers in a big win in Round 4 and another three in Monday night’s win over Adelaide.

The sixth-placed Saints next take on ladder leader Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

I love Dan as a player.  His draft highlights are out of this world.
But in 2018 he went soft but more importantly looked lazy. Wouldn't surprise if this happened at the Saints also.  I hope not though.

Goes alright this kid. Another 4 goals tonight.  Possible trade target for us??
Glad we gave him away for nothing.

I think from memory he had some injuries and maybe a hampered preseason or was that in 2019?

I always thought he was the best if the three amigos although it didn’t look like it last year when he struggled to make the senior side and when he did he didn’t take his opportunity.

It’s a shame we couldn’t keep him as he made all our small forwards better.
The club that keeps giving.

we won a flag without him (2019) having any impact at all, so he was never going to net us a high pick based on our clubs performance that year.

Had we had not won in 2019 it would be a different conversation now.

Couldn’t understand why we kept Gorge and not Butler , both Gorge and Bulter can have shockers and be match winners to be fair. And Bulter was unlucky to be coming  out of contract.
Most of the players that have left in the last few years have been good for their new sides , got to be
A vote of confidence in our system.
