You can't have it both ways (ATM for RFC)
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:31:04 AM »
Reading posts and watching games this week end it is apparent you can't have it both ways (at the moment for RFC).

Option 1. Play slowly deliberately and finally turn the ball over and concede a goal
Option 2. Play on as quickly as possible taking the game on at every opportunity. This will result in a high turnover rate BUT deliver more forward movement and hopefully goals. It will also create pressure on the opposition.

So if you are bagging Brandon Ellis and others for poor kicking and high turnover rate, just take a step back. I would much rather the whole team take it on and go for it, turnovers accepted.

As with everything, it is a learning process. They will get better over time. As the team progresses and understands this fundamental fast play and take it on style, the turnovers will lessen, players will learn to present better and we will move forward.

The best teams do it with less turnovers, does our high rate mean we need more practice or is it simply that we don't have sufficient cattle to execute properly.

Cattle and confidence.  Our boys are low in confidence which means they cannot repeat what they do in training on the field under pressure. Of course many lack the skills to execute it as well.

Good thread

Minimal turnovers >>> lots of turnovers going forward >>>>>>> lots of turnovers going sideways & backwards.

Agreed, I am unsure, I think it is a little of both, but I have heard you can teach a horse to deal cards with the aid of a cattle prod.

Quick ball movement isn't necessarily this play on at all costs handpass at every opportunity game style that I don't like seeing. It involves hard running (downfield) and good structures that create space and allow you to move the ball long by foot. This the value of having quick, hard running, clever flankers and wings who know where to run.

It also involves having guys with good foot skills. The quickest way to slow down possession is to miss a target.

I want to see us move the ball quicker and more directly but there has to be some method behind it.

Agree HOD, but which comes first the chicken or the egg. Can we go from nothing to something overnight?

Except that Ellis's turnovers were generally under little or no pressure, and in the first quarter especially he absolutely butchered the ball on 4 or 5 occasions that resulted in turnovers.  I have no problem with mistakes when taking the game on but the last thing we could be accused of in that first quarter was taking the game on.  It was the same pus we had been dishing out for the past 5 weeks.

It's taken me all day to work out the intent of the thread , I think I gotchya, no doubt we were kicking rather than handball more and as a result particularly early there were some mammoth clangers , largely from Ellis, came good though and yeah , can't have it both ways

i think it refers to an act that leaves a crappy taste in your mouth, besides watching Richmond for most of this year.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
