Richmond Football Club has officially launched the construction of the $20 million redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.
 
Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Julia Gillard, had a tour of the Club’s current facilities at a special function last Saturday and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support for the project.
 
“This is a very special partnership to redevelop Punt Road Oval, and it’s something the Australian Government has been proud to contribute $6.75 million towards,” she said.
 
“One of the reasons we’ve done that is we know these new facilities are going to make a contribution to closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.”
 
A feature of the new facility is the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development, to be named Korin Gamadji, which means ‘grow and emerge’.
 
The Institute will help close the gap for indigenous youth and young people by offering education and employment opportunities.
 
Outgoing Richmond CEO Steven Wright described the redevelopment as a “great football and community facility”.
 
“We started off with the board back in 2005 and we said we had to get these facilities back on track,” he said.
 
“With the support of Gary (March) and the board we’ve been able to talk to the Federal Government and get their fantastic support. The State Government has chipped in two amounts and the City of Melbourne and the AFL have also helped out.”
 
Senior Elder of the Wurundjeri Tribe, Aunty Joy Murphy, was also present at last Saturday’s launch to perform a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony.

“We hope that our indigenous people, our community, our players and the broader community, will grow and emerge much stronger than when they’ve started off in their lives,” she said.
 
“That’s what we see as the positives here at the new institute.”
 
The new facility at Punt Road Oval is due for completion toward the end of 2010.
 
Built over three levels, the facility will feature a community gym, indoor sports centre, meeting rooms, lecture theatre and a new museum, plus a state-of-the-art football department.

I think they've got a few of the locals mad, cutting down some trees. Good to see something finally happening.

Apparently they're knocking down the mound at the Northern end of the ground first so they can move the membership department there temporarily while the redevelopment is occurring. They'll then start knocking down the old Social club. I was told demolition will begin in 2 weeks.

The redevelopment has finally begun apparently.

The Tiger Den will operate from a temporary facility, just 20m away from the old shop site, in Yarra Park. The facility will be open weekdays from 10am-5pm.

Richmond Social Club Demolished
2009 RFC Annual Report

Richmond's iconic Social Club was demolished in late October to make way for the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval.

The prominent building will be replaced by a $20million facility, which will provide the solution to the facilities' problems Tigerland has endured for the past 50 years.

The redevelopment of Punt Road Oval will bring the football department up to an elite standard in the
AFL, as well as provide services and employment opportunities for members of the community.

Once completed, not only will the Club boast stateof-the-art gymnasiums and football facilities, but also
leading medical and rehabilitation amenities, and the capacity to host large functions and conferences.

The redevelopment will also feature a community and corporate social responsibility program, with
the centre-piece being the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development.

Richmond's new facility is expected to be completed in late 2010.

Just an update on the redevelopment at Punt Rd. They are well on their way into putting in the concrete foundations. There's now also a concrete wall along the boundary where the new building will be. In front of the Jack Dyer stand there's a massive long trench which I guessing is for the new drainage.

It is anticipated that the facility will be completed by November this year.

Standing three storeys tall, the Punt Road redevelopment includes state-of-the-art player amenities, community gym, indoor sports centre, meeting rooms, lecture theatre and museum, as well as housing the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development.

Punt Road Oval Redevelopment Fund

With construction well underway on the new Punt Road Oval facility, the Club is seeking the assistance of its supporters to donate money to the fit-out of the new facilities.

The Punt Road Redevelopment Fund provides all Tiger supporters with the opportunity to contribute to the redevelopment.

Supporters will be given the option to donate an amount equal to the cost of a piece of equipment required to fit out the new facility.

Donors will have the option to donate annually over a period of 5 years, and all donations will be tax deductible via the Australian Sports Foundation. All donors' names will go on a special logo honour board, to be placed in the new gymnasium and published in the Club's 2010 Annual Report.

A letter and pledge form will be mailed to members in the coming weeks.
