Melbourne's AFL clubs to receive funding
March 17, 2008 - 2:43PM

Melbourne-based AFL clubs will receive $10.5 million of state government funding to help upgrade their facilities.

Premier John Brumby and AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou jointly announced the funding on Monday afternoon at Richmond's Punt Road headquarters.

The Tigers will receive the biggest slice of the pie, a $2.5 million grant to help upgrade Punt Road Oval.

The Kangaroos will receive $2 million towards the long-awaited development of a new football department headquarters at Arden Street.

They showed it on the Ch 10 news. Wright, Sugar, Newy and a few other Tigers  were there along with Judd, Brad Johnson and Nick Riewoldt. They also showed a quick glimpse of the plans  :thumbsup

Had an Adelaide official on the news saying that the Victorian clubs will be ahead of them and they'll struggle to keep pace with them.

He's kidding right lol

Where was the pity when we had nothing.

I saw that too and had to laugh. The Crows have 50k members and top facilities at Footy Park  :wallywink. How about the Eagles with their thermometer pill so they can measure body temperatures during games. Yep those poor interstate clubs  :wallywink.

$2.5 million to Richmond's Punt Road Oval for both ground improvements - including drought-proofing - and the building of a new indoor facility.

Crow calls over AFL benefits

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/crow-calls-over-afl-benefits/2008/03/17/1205602294202.html

NON-VICTORIAN clubs will soon be the ones lagging behind if their Melbourne rivals continue to reap the benefits of AFL and government handouts, according to Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg.

Yesterday's distribution of $10.5 million in funding to Melbourne clubs by the Victorian government was met with some incredulity by Trigg, who said the league's equalisation policies were already providing a great deal of propping up in the game's heartland without added government help.

"There's a very strong equalisation policy in the competition in terms of the special distribution fund," Trigg said. "Now with this sort of state government intervention, we are moving towards a situation where the non-Victorian clubs will be under pressure to catch up."

Traditional strugglers Richmond, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs were high on the list of clubs receiving financial support, but so, too, were the likes of Collingwood and Essendon, neither of whom appear to be anywhere near financial hard times.

"In one sense you say good luck to them (the Melbourne clubs), I'm not sitting here with jealousy," Trigg said. "But the non-Victorian clubs have also got some big challenges ahead in terms of our facilities for the next 10-20 years."

Trigg's words were supported last week by the release of AFL figures regarding football department spending by each club.

In 2007 the Crows ranked seventh out of 16 in terms of football expenses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stop lumping us with those cretins! Financial support? I would have thought coming up with a plan and executing it by raising money anywhere we can was good business. We raise brand awareness and give something to the community. Didn't realise we were asking for something for nothing. Journalists!  :-\

Perhaps Adelaide need to get off their behind and do some work for their money.

$2.5 million funding for Richmond FC

“This injection of much needed funding will enable the ground to be restored to its former glory. Most importantly, this money will be used to repair the damaged oval so that the Richmond Football Club will once again have a permanent training base,” Mr Wright said.

Mr Wright said it is envisaged that these environmental initiatives will reduce RFC use of mains potable water by up to 50% - a massive 6 mega litres. Mr Wright added that in the future RFC will become a showcase for environmental sustainability.

These initiatives include:
- Relaying and reshaping the playing surface at PRO to include drought resistant
grasses, new drainage to minimise leakage and to capture water seepage for recycling.
- Harvesting water from the roof of the Jack Dyer Grandstand and other buildings at PRO.
- Utilising bore water.
- Introducing solar hot water systems.
- Using grey water on the surrounding gardens.

Work on the project is due to start within the next six months and this funding will significantly close the gap on total construction costs. The club is now in a position to prepare plans for council, Mr Wright said.

Not sure what Wright means by permanent given there'll still be cricket during the summer and we'll be training a lot of the time at the new Craigieburn facility anyway once it's built ??
