In the mix: round 17

RICHMOND

If key forward Ben Griffiths is available to face Fremantle after a two-week shoulder injury, he demands selection. The 23-year-old can come into the team as a dangerous forward but also provide ruck support, which leaves the Tigers with an interesting selection dilemma. Do they play both ruckmen, Shaun Hampson and Ivan Maric, or drop one? While it seemed unfathomable that Hampson would push Maric out of the team two weeks ago, he has taken on the No.1 ruck role the past two weeks and stood up and may be the best option against Aaron Sandilands. Then there is young forward Liam McBean, who kicked five goals in the VFL to press his claims as a third tall forward.

If there are further changes, Chris Knights is nearly ready for senior action after three VFL games. He had 28 touches at the weekend. Matt Dea had 35 possessions and 12 marks across half-back and will surely be considered.

I really think Knights if he stays fit can change our lineup the most in the coming weeks. We lack a smart roaming forward who can hit up on a lead and can crumb at ground level. He is an extremely smart footballer that is dangerous and that could provide us with an extra few goals a game that can make us compete against the top sides come finals time.
My man Matty Dea is also someone I think that could improve us but it seems clear that DH doesn't rate him. The only way I see him getting picked is if someone in our back line gets injured.

The other ins and outs are just moving witches hats IMO, no real upside in anyone currently not getting a game that is not injured.

Dea, McBean, Astbury, Knights and Arnot have all been playing well in the VFL. All deserve a chance at some stage in the seniors. Dea has been knocking on the door for quite a while. I would bring Dea in at the expense of Newman. I think Knights brings a lot of class and consideration should be given to him playing in the forward line in the absence of Edwards.

Too soon for Knights in my opinion but I do like the way the club is managing his return having him play only half games or 3/4 games in the twos.
He should stay out of site for atleast another three weeks & possibly come in as a sub against the GC that will give him just enough time to have him warmed up for finals footy as gets three full games of senior footy before finals start.

Knights could be the best option for a specialist sub.

I'd use him as the sub against Hawthorn.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

May as well get re-injured playing AFL rather than in the VFL, at least he might make some contribution before he is out injured for an extended period again.

I was referring to sometime in the future, not specifically the next two games

the sub is a strange position. Someone has to be selected for it

Matt White?

white is not very good, but he was fast

IMO the sub needs to have some weapons, like being really fast like white, or quite silky like knights. when everyone is knackered, and a fresh guy comes on it makes an impact. Menadue didnt touch the ball vs. Freo for example, but just his chasing, pace and freshness forced freo into many errors IMO. Yet, ideally Menadue (and C Ellis, Lennon etc. ) would be playing full games, either one or twos. Not this sub rubbish

i think newman or grigg would be terrible options

knights need to start on the ground so you can activate the sub when he gets injured.

you dont want him coming on as the sub then getting injured.
