Spoke to him a couple of times, good bloke but should have done the right thing & retired at the end of last season.

He's an adult, he should be equally responsible

You're totally right. He should have turned down a paycheck, stopped playing a sport he enjoys and stopped providing for his family. Real irresponsible of him

Not arguing that, we are taking about valuing the jumper, not his family.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

thats just bollocks. if he overates himself, by thinking he has something to contribute when he doesnt, that has nothing to with his valuing of the jumper.

Although he has had a long time in football, a football career is relatively short. I cant blame any person for wanting to continue their career as long as they can. Once you pull the pin, there's no going back, its over.

If the match committee refused to select him then that would influence his thinking, but as long as they select him , he, as most players would, will see this as vindication to continue on playing.

His career went a few longer than it should, but to label a player selfish just because he wants to continue doing something he enjoys and has been the main focus in his life for the last ten years is unfair.

You do realise when he plays a game he doesn't pick himself to play
If you think he played too long, direct your anger elsewhere.
It seems he was the only person at the club to realise he had gone on too long
I don't think he's been that shabby, but I'm sure he would agree to give a younger kid a go is probably the best way to go.

Newy was a very good footballer in his prime. Unfortunately for him, we were crap as a side during that time. Not the first footballer at Richmond during the past 35 years that that has happened to. Even Newy admitted during the past week that at times this year the game now has gone past him despite his mind and body feeling okay. That's why he is retiring.

It's not that he looks spent but the pace of the game has well and truly gone past him.

Whilst we are winning well it's okay, finals intensity will expose Newy.

Could be an important sub though as a forward pinch hitter at best.
