Fremantle, Essendon circle Gold Coast Suns Harley Bennell

PATRICK BILLINGS
Herald-Sun
October 6, 2015

HARLEY Bennell’s manager says Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is the man to resurrect his troubled career.

The Dockers have ramped up their background checks on the wayward Gold Coast star after Richmond went cold across the weekend.

“I’ve given him several options and he’ll make his decision in the next 48 hours, but Fremantle are certainly leading it,” Bennell’s manager Colin Young told the Herald Sun.

“It looks like it will be Fremantle ... Harley is back in Perth. Ross did some amazing things with Son Son (Michael Walters) and changed his life — and I’m pretty sure that Ross will be able to do some pretty good things working with Harley going forward as well.”

New Essendon coach John Worsfold wouldn’t rule out his club having a look at Bennell declaring the Bombers must “explore” the possibility.

“Plenty of interest in his talent and we need to do some research into his desire to commit to the standards that will be expected at the Essendon Football Club,” Worsfold told Trade Radio.

“I think we need to explore it because his talent warrants that but it is a package that comes and we need to really find out where his mind is at.”

Young, who also manages Gold Coast Suns star Jaeger O’Meara, said there was “no chance” the powerhouse midfielder would be leaving the expansion club.

Richmond was in the mix to recruit Bennell late last week but opted out after he visited Melbourne.

A medical test scheduled for Friday was pushed back after Bennell was seen out partying in the early hours of the morning.

The Tigers confirmed the test took place later in the day.

“Harley certainly didn’t miss a medical that’s for sure — I pulled him out it,” Young said.

Bennell bailed on Tigers medical

Harley Bennell was believed to be informed by his manager Colin Young that he should not complete a medical at Richmond as they had not made a contract offer to the player.

After he was axed by Gold Coast the 23-year-old has been sussing out his options as the trade period approaches and it was initially though the Tigers had almost sealed the deal.

“Richmond has obviously counted itself out of that one after he apparently missed a medical session with them,” said SEN draft expert Brett Anderson.

“From what I can understand his manager has said that it was at his request that he shouldn’t do the medical because there was no actual offer in.

“That would be an intriguing development, I thought you’d do the medical and then the offer comes.

“Fremantle is pretty keen and they think he wants to live in Western Australia, but with Richmond out there’s a pretty small list of clubs interested.”

His manager is an oxygen thief. Very ordinary bloke. Was just using us to leverage more $ from Freo which is why he wanted the contract. Harley obviously owned up so we pulled out.

I don't think so.  I think his spoiled goods was bout to be caught out and he is trying to make the best out of a muffed up situation.  Now we have said we are not interested, his price went down for GC and for him personally.  He will be lucky to get a gig on a rooky wage at this rate lol.

His manager has definitely flip-flopped within a week. Gone from saying Bennell should play for a Melbourne club away from bad influences in WA to now saying Ross Lyon and Freo will provide that needed strong mentoring for Bennell. At the end of the day, wherever Bennell goes, if he doesn't get his act together himself then he'll just join the long line of unfulfilled naturally talented footballers who quickly vanish from the AFL scene.

Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell looks certain to be at Fremantle next season, with industry sources indicating he has named the Dockers his club of choice.

Bennell, 23, has been linked to several clubs since being put up for trade by the Suns last month after a string of misdemeanours.

The 2010 No.2 draft pick met Richmond officials last week, only for the Tigers to pull out of the race on Sunday.

The West Australian understands he has now told the Suns he wants to return to Perth and play for the Dockers.

Bennell’s nomination, combined with a waning interest in his services, means the Dockers may be able to give up as little as a second-round pick to get him.
