He does play exactly like his brother, only he gets less than half of the ball Joel does.
Patrick is NOT a HBF sweeper!

Wallace wants to make him a wingman.

Sunday Herald Sun
09 October 2005

Richmond coach Terry Wallace has also challenged Patrick Bowden to seize the day as a Tiger after six inconsistent seasons at the Bulldogs.

Wallace has foreshadowed a new role for Bowden as a tall marking wingman.

Bowden has finally made his way to the Tigers after an aborted trade last year. He will become the fourth member of his family to play at the club, after brothers Joel and Sean, and father Michael, a 1969 premiership player.

Wallace said Bowden would be given plenty of opportunities at Richmond, but it was time the player he drafted at the Bulldogs in 1999 to make good on his talent.

"I know exactly what we are getting," he said. "It is warts and all. I know the good side, the potential, and what he can and can't do.

"Last year didn't work out. He thought he had a point to prove with the Bulldogs, which is fair enough, but it didn't work out his way through the year . . .

"Over the next 18 months he must take a step-up or his career is starting to get away from him."

Still totally different to the way Joel plays.

He'll be more of a HFF who pushes up the ground and marks on the wings.

Joel can play anywhere Razor.

He wouldn't look out of sorts on the wing or up forward.

His brother lacks some of his natural talent and ball winning ability, but they aren't too disimilar in style.

Joel joy as Patrick progresses to Punt Road

Tony Greenberg
richmondfc.com.au

It’s been a massive few weeks for Joel Bowden since the end of the 2005 season . . .

First-up, the Richmond deputy vice-captain was named on a half-back flank in the ’05 All-Australian side. This was his inaugural All-Australian selection.

Then, he made it back-to-back Jack Dyer Medals, with a one-vote win (over Matthew Richardson) in the Club’s Best and Fairest count.

A couple of weekends ago, ‘Bowdo’ married his long-time girlfriend Katie in his hometown of Alice Springs.

To cap off this momentous time in Bowdo’s life, last Friday his younger brother Patrick was traded to Richmond from the Western Bulldogs in exchange for pick No. 56 overall at next month’s AFL National Draft.

Patrick Bowden, 24, 191cm and 91kg, has played 50 games and kicked 55 goals since making his senior league debut in 2001.

He becomes the fourth member of the Bowden clan to play for Richmond, following in the footsteps of brothers Joel and Sean and his father Michael, who was a member of the Tigers’ 1969 premiership side.

The Bowdens are a close-knit family, and Joel was delighted when he heard the news late last week that Patrick would be joining him at Punt Road . . .

“It’s an exciting time at Richmond for starters. We’re on the way up, we’ve had solid improvement in 2005 and we’re looking for more improvement as the years go on under Terry (Wallace). But also, to have my younger brother come and be part of that, is going to be a really special feeling for me,” Bowden said.

“I’ve watched him at the Bulldogs with keen interest and have seen him play some very good games. Hopefully, he can come to Richmond and replicate those quality games that he’s played with the Dogs, further improve, and be a solid week-in, week-out contributor for us.

“Terry wouldn’t have got him to the Club if he didn’t think he had something to offer.”

Bowden remarked that his parents were “overjoyed” their two AFL-playing sons would now be teammates together at Tigerland.

“Mum and Dad are just very, very happy. Because Dad’s played here and Sean’s played here, I’m here, and now Patrick comes to the Club, it’s continuing on a family tradition that we find very special,” he said.

“We’ve got a big, strong family, and football’s a great medium for bringing us all together. We get on the phone and talk to each other about what’s happening . . . Because it’s on the TV, they can see and know what we’re doing. Now, with us both at the same club, it’s going to be even more interesting.”

Joel hasn’t yet spoken to Patrick about his move to Richmond: “He’s overseas and uncontactable at the moment . . . Hopefully, I’ll be able to speak to him in the next couple of days,” he said.

The 27-year-old veteran of 192 league games with the Tigers, is off overseas himself tomorrow, on his honeymoon with Kate. When he returns in early November, he’ll have an extra spring in his step for pre-season training.

“It’s going to be exciting to be training with Patrick and spending so much more time with him. I’m really looking forward to it . . .” he said.

When Patrick Bowden pulls on the famous Yellow and Black guernsey for the first time in the 2006 season, the Bowdens will become only the fourth family in Richmond’s league football history to have three brothers represent the Club at senior level.

Patrick, who was traded by the Western Bulldogs to Richmond late last week, joins his older brother Joel at Punt Road, with another brother, Sean, having played with the Tigers in the early 1990s.

The Bowdens will step up to the elite ‘three-brothers’ list at Tigerland upon Patrick’s Richmond debut, joining the Bowers (1980s-90s), the Weatherills (1910s-20s) and the Rush clan (1910s-1920s).

There have been several other instances in the Tigers’ history of brothers playing under 19s or reserve-grade football, but not going on to join their siblings in senior company at the Club.

I have not included those players in the following list of Tiger ‘brothers-in-arms’. The playing career details (courtesy of ‘The Tigers Of Old’ book) relate to Richmond senior games only, and the surnames appear in alphabetical order . . .

Do anyone know what number guernsey Paddy Bowden will have?

Cambo's #9 jumper will be retired for the year you'd think as a mark of respect. That leaves 1, 34, 16 and 37 left over from last year.

I think we will know by Christmas.

I reckon he'll get number 16

It's been a bit of a dud bigman's guernsey in recent times - Morrison, Holland and Stevan Jackson :help.

Probably the last time we had someone decent where number 16 was Bryan Wood over 20 years ago :-\.

Bowden aims to help

Exclusive to afl.com.au

The ability to make a difference in the yellow and black - and not just playing with his older brother - is what will drive Richmond recruit Patrick Bowden in 2006.

Bowden - the younger brother of 2004-05 Jack Dyer Medallist Joel - said it is "exciting" to know that he will be playing with his older sibling in 2006, but he added that helping Richmond gain the four points each week is what's motivating him the most.

"It's been a long time since I've played footy with him. It's probably been since the under 16s and I won't really know what it's like until we actually get out there for the first NAB Cup match," Bowden said.

"I hope I can adjust accordingly - and it's not just about playing footy with him - but it's about winning games for Richmond. I'm looking forward to it, but I know there are bigger things and better things than just playing footy with your brother."

The 24-year-old, who played 50 AFL matches with the Western Bulldogs from 2001-05, said he was "initially disappointed" to leave the Dogs, despite the fact he almost crossed to Punt Rd at the end of the 2004 season.

Bowden said he wanted to play his "whole career" at the Bulldogs, but he was philosophical about his departure from the Whitten Oval.

"My manager and I talked to Richmond last year and it didn't happen last year, because I didn't want to leave the Bulldogs and I thought I was going to be a good player and a needed player," Bowden said.

"This year, the Bulldogs actually wanted to find a trade for me, so they could help me out and help me play more senior football and I was just lucky enough that (Richmond coach) Terry (Wallace) was still keen on me as a football player.

"He thought that I could add more depth and more to the Richmond game plan and he rang me up and he wanted me at the club, so the trade was done and I'm pretty happy about that."

Bowden was exchanged to Richmond on the final day of the recent trade period and he was thankful it didn't occur just before the 2pm deadline.

"I still didn't know coming into the final day, but my trade was done really early in the morning, so it took the anxious wait away from that 2pm period, so it was done and I was happy about that," Bowden said.

But he said it was still a "nerve-racking" experience joining the Tigers, despite knowing that Joel was already at the club.

"It doesn't make the change any easier. I'll still have a point to prove and I'll still have to show all of those guys who are there that I can play," Bowden said.

"They've seen me play for the Bulldogs and they know what I can do on a small scale and I want to show them really what I can do and hopefully I can make my spot in the senior side and really earn respect, hopefully.

"I don't think I'm the saviour because there was a good side there before and they showed that in the first 11 or 12 rounds (in 2005) and I just want to add to that and if I can add to that and get us those extra three or four wins during the season and take us through to the finals - that'd be what I really, really want."

Over the pre-season, Bowden is working on his speed and power. And despite having played most of his football as a forward, he hinted he was not fazed where Wallace wanted him to play.

"It's not really up to me to change my position, but I've played the majority of my football as a forward and if that's where Terry wants me to play, then that's why he's recruited me to play as a forward - I'll do that," Bowden said.

"If he's got other plans for me - whether it's in the backline or full-back - it doesn't bother me and I know I can play a variety of roles around the ground and it just depends on where Terry wants me to play.

"We've had talks and it's going to be exciting to find out where I end up and where I play my best football."

I dont rate him.

Be very intersted to see next season if he can become a long term player for us or if he is just 'filling in' untill a Limbach/Meyer types come of age.

Keen on his pre-season and 2006.
