Best of Tigers still worst of AFL era

IT’S the era that clearly represents the most significant changes in Australian football’s 158-year history, one that began when the VFL became the AFL in 1990 and Collingwood finally put its Colliwobbles to bed.

To celebrate this pivotal 25 years of Australian rules history, the Herald Sun has selected “best of” teams for the 13 sides that have played since 1990, plus Adelaide, Fremantle and Port Adelaide who entered the competition in the 1990s.

In each instance Jon Anderson has acted as one selector and then employed a consultant who has a deep knowledge of the respective sides.

Over coming days we will continue the countdown from “worst to best” of these respective sides.

Anderson chose the order whereas the consultants advised on team composition.

We begin today with Richmond. The Tigers find themselves in 16th place after failing to win a flag in the AFL era and reaching the finals only a depressing five times.

Leon Daphne, president of the Tigers from 1993-99, acted as consultant and was disappointed to find that our selection criteria — 100 games, five years or 200 goals — wasn’t met by Dale Weightman and Craig Lambert, who carried their careers over from the 1980s.

Daphne agreed that Matthew Richardson was the club’s only clear-cut champion in the AFL era, although he argued Matthew Knights and Wayne Campbell had claims for the same rating.

But in the end it wasn’t a hard team to pick given the lack of viable alternatives, although Daniel Jackson and Scott Turner were both given strong consideration.

Hogg played mostly FF in the AFL era and doesn't fit the criteria the rejected Flea and Lambert  .

Hoggy at FB?  He only played FB when his best days at FF were over!  Daffy???      Michael Gale was magnitudes better for us than Daffy!  Ottens is pretty lucky, had a good career at Geelong but not so much with us & would struggle to make the best AFL team from Geelong. 
The rest pretty much select themselves as the best of an average lot from yesteryear.  Interesting that several current players (& coach) have already made our best team, I would've named either Richo or Knights as captain though.
Strange mix of flawed but faithful servants with a few traitors tossed in (Daffy & Ottens     ) ... 
The incredibly poor kicking skills of nearly the whole list of past players (especially the full back line) is the stuff of nightmares!

I Thought Jason Torney and Stuart Maxfield may have got a gig?

I did consider Torney for the BP position, Mint.

Maxfield had a good 1995 but he then left for Sydney  .

Ox, you were always a big fan of 'Sugar'  .

It's harder than it looks. The backline choices per position especially are few and far between  .

Gas was an excellent one-on-one stopper but the reality was he couldn't kick. Sadly, he wouldn't last long in today's footy. With the defensive set-ups and press, opposition coaches would love Gas having possession of the footy in the backline.

I went with Rance and Scotty as the best two KPDs. May be bias as Scotty adds some hardness in defence but Turner in his prime also kept Dunstall goal-less after being part of Dunstall's 17 goal feast earlier on in his career.

Gaspar in his prime would be one of the best defenders in todays footy, or any era of footy for that matter. he was incredible at his best. shocker of a kick but hey how much of the footy do dawson, talia, carlile and those types get? primary objective as a defender is to stop your opponent kicking goals and Gas was a master at that until his knee went bang.
