Northey should be coach. He won us a final and united the team with an "us against them" mentality that we haven't had since.

The only reason I gave Dimma the nod, was because we've been more consistent under him (and I don't mean at losing finals lol ). None of our coaches in the AFL era have gone close to winning flag but IMHO the first coach in 40 years to finally get us to make successive finals gets the nod.

AFL era, basically since the introduction of the ND in 86.
It really does show why we have been so poor when bums can get into the best 22 over a 30 yr period.

Ive got no doubt that Northey would've got us into finals in '96 but the board thought it better to sign up a cheating scum-fellow that had already stated he'd had enough of coaching and had lost the passion for it.  :banghead

With respect Northey had a contract and because use the club wouldn't extended it he walked out on our club

He walked out, he wasn't sacked, wasn't forced out, he walked out with. 12 months to go on his contract

Please don't forget that... Did they get I his replacement right? No but Northey isn't blameless in that fiasco. Actually he created it

no Mal brown created it. He was front and centre in a very public white anting campaign to get rid of northey.

Because of this northey wanted his existing contract extended. From memory he had one year to go and asked for another year to be added, which was rejected by richmond

He was offered a three year contract by Brisbane so chose to take the job security they offered, rather than the insecurity that comes with an influencial character undermining you and the club not doing anything to allay any fears he would get his way.

The Mal Brown white anting is correct and I am not disputing that

But Leon Daphne was president and he was a man of integrity. Mal might have believed he had all the power but he didn't. Ultimately the board decided not to give him an extra year. Was it the right decision at board level? we will never know.

But I will admit I find it some what ironic that fast forward to 2015 and the majority on this forum are deadset against giving our current coach an extension But so many reckon we should not have hesitated in giving Northey an extension after taking us to 1 final's campaign

Anyway back to my main point the fact still remains Northey had year to run on a contract and he walked

not too sure how you draw the conclusion about "so many", nor can i understand how you cant see the difference in the circumstances

Sorry WP, but I'm absolutely with Penelope and Y&B Blood on this one. The official club line may be that Northey broke his contract, but Mal Brown was behind Swooper leaving because he wanted a "better" coach. And we ended up with Robert Walls...pfft. Just another example of Richmond shooting itself in the foot.
