The AFL has changed its Next Generation Academy rules for top-end talent

The AFL will put into place a 'protected' zone for NGA players in the first 20 picks of the draft.

It means from 2021 Academy players, such as Ugle-Hagan with the Bulldogs and Lachie Jones for Port Adelaide this year, who attract bids in the first 20 picks will fall into the open pool with their NGA clubs not being able to match the bids.

Under the revised rules, players who attract bids in the 20-40 range will have to be matched under usual Academy rules while all players selected from pick No.41 onwards can be matched by their club using the next available selection.

The phase out of the NGA program will continue in 2022, with bids on nominated NGA prospects only able to be matched from pick 41 onwards.

Its the 'do anything to stop Richmond winning another Premiership' policy at AFL headquarters.  If you want to get ahead there then follow it without question

Battle lines could be drawn between two powerhouse Melbourne clubs ahead of the AFL Draft this year over a prospect who is showing “unbelievable” traits in the NAB League. Bendigo Pioneers forward Nyawi Moore is in the unique position of being a father-son prospect for Essendon as well as a Next Generation Academy member for Richmond.

The son of former Bombers star Nathan Lovett-Murray, Moore has shown no shortage of “tricks” for the Pioneers this season since training at Tullamarine over pre-season. The 18-year-old had 14 disposals against Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League last weekend, but 10 of those came during an eye-catching third quarter.

I don’t understand how this whole academy system works.  Have we got any players from it?

I think the swans have done really well from it.

Eggy was the first from our NGA.

Biggie was drafted by us but he originally belonged to St Kilda's NGA.

The northern state clubs like the Swans have academies that are more about directing NSW & Qld athletic/sporty kids into playing AFL. It's not just kids from indigenous or new migrant backgrounds. IIRC, the NGAs were a means to give the non-northern state clubs academy zones. Ours is across northern Victoria.

Our Academy Zone has been a stuffen disaster.  When you see what the likes to Lollingwood, Bullfrogs and the interstate teams are getting gifted to them we completely buggered it up.

Yes but they made up for it by giving us the Gold Coast Suns as an academy.
