NAB Challenge preview: What will your team produce?

RICHMOND

What’s new: A deeper, harder midfield that will feature recruits Jacob Townsend and Andrew Moore, as well as second-year onballer Corey Ellis. Contested ball is a religion at Punt Road Oval after last year's final defeat, so expect to see plenty of Tigers putting their bodies on the line.

Bolters: Mature-age recruit Nathan Broad appears certain to play in the opening NAB Challenge match, and from there could make a push for round one selection. He has impressed the Tigers all summer and could earn a spot as a tall defender or rebounder such is his versatility. Expect Daniel Rioli and Oleg Markov to feature early on.

Who’s back: David Astbury is a virtual recruit for the Tigers after just four games in 2015. After a string of injuries, his absence last year was largely due to form but he has been among the standouts this pre-season. Nathan Drummond is still recovering from a knee reconstruction and won't feature in the NAB Challenge.

Wildcard: After spending time in the forward line this pre-season, key defender Troy Chaplin could be planted in attack through the NAB Challenge while Astbury and Alex Rance man the key defensive posts.

Missing: High profile recruit Chris Yarran (calf) appears at best a chance of playing in the final NAB Challenge match. Ruckman Shaun Hampson is also unlikely to feature early after shoulder surgery in the off-season. The majority of Richmond's A-graders will be unveiled in the second and third rounds

Fantasy watch: Nathan Broad (DEF, $125,000) has four years of WAFL football behind him, and as an outside, running defender, there are few cheaper going.

Hardwick will follow the lead of several other AFL clubs and hand over the coaching duties to assistant Brendon Lade for the Tigers' opening pre-season match on Friday night.

NAB 1: Marcon - From phys ed teacher to tagger (Age)

From phys ed teacher to tagger

Ronny Lerner
The Age
February 19, 2016

Less than three months after his AFL dream hung in the balance, mature-aged Richmond rookie Adam Marcon is preparing for the biggest challenge of his footy life – containing Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe and Fremantle skipper David Mundy.

Tigers assistant coach Brendon Lade, who will take over the senior reins from Damien Hardwick for Friday night's practice match against Fremantle in Mandurah, confirmed on Thursday that Marcon would be given the daunting assignment.

It's a far cry from the Penleigh and Essendon Grammar schoolyard, where Marcon was teaching physical education late last year.

The 23-year-old was selected by Richmond at pick No.47 in November's rookie draft after five years in the VFL.

"I think he'd rather be with us flying to Perth than be at PEGS college teaching," Lade joked about Marcon at Melbourne Airport.

"It's good for Adam, great story. We've found out he's a very, very good runner and can find the ball a lot so we look forward to seeing what he can do.

"He'll probably play on Fyfe and Mundy and people like that through their midfield."

Another fresh face who the Tiger faithful are looking forward to getting their first glimpse of is young Daniel Rioli – the great nephew of Richmond and Indigenous legend Maurice Rioli.

Adding to the hype is the fact that Daniel will also be wearing the No.17 which Maurice made famous in 85 of his 118 games for Richmond.

But Lade stressed the external expectations on Daniel far outweighed those of the club's and he just wanted the 18-year-old to concentrate on playing his role in the team.

"The club has been talking to him a lot about that stuff, it probably all started when he got No.17, obviously the last name as well, but he understands all that, he's a very level-headed kid," Lade said.

"He's fit in really well and he's a really good person and hopefully it translates to his footy.

"Daniel will play in the forward line [on Friday)], he'll probably go into the midfield for a little bit as well. But, look, if he gets a couple of touches, a couple of tackles, a couple of shots at goal, we'll be happy."

Richmond are taking a very inexperienced team over to WA to face a Fremantle side brimming with A-graders, but Lade saw it as an opportunity for the young Tigers to get a decent footy education.

"It's a good test for some of our kids," Lade said.

"Nearly most of the kids we wanted to play, the ones we want to improve, are playing this game so for us it's them going against a very good side. So they get to learn, they get to play against them and hopefully compete very well."

New recruits Oleg Markov and Mabior Chol as well as former GWS hard nut Jacob Townsend are also set to feature against Fremantle.

Lade said he was looking forward to his first game as a senior coach and appreciated the chance that Hardwick had given him.

It continues a league-wide trend of senior coaches handing over their responsibility in the pre-season, with the likes of Melbourne, Sydney and Hawthorn also doing so this year.

"It'll be a bit of fun hopefully, a good experience for me," the former Port Adelaide premiership ruckman said.

"Not much changes the way we play ... it's just about getting our structures right, but for me it's probably the experience of the whole week – going through people's presentations, deciding what we show the players, what we don't show them, just the other side that I haven't done before."

Lade said his goal was to become a senior coach one day.

He also confirmed Hardwick would spend Friday's practice game on the boundary line.

Tiger cubs ready for Freo baptism of fire

RICHMOND draftee Daniel Rioli will benefit from the experience of facing a full-strength Fremantle team in his NAB Challenge debut on Friday night, according to assistant coach Brendon Lade.

Rioli is one of seven new draftees who will be blooded against the Dockers, including mature-age recruits Nathan Broad and Adam Marcon, rookies Mabior Chol and Callum Moore, and second-round selection Oleg Markov.

Lade said the Tigers were not daunted by pitting their young players against a Dockers outfit that will include Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe.

"We thought they might play a lot of their good players and to see Fyfe though, it's a good experience for everyone," Lade said as the Tigers flew out on Thursday.

"All the first-year players who got a game, Markov, Chol, Marcon, they're all really excited.

"We're sick of playing against ourselves, so to go up against a quality side in Fremantle over there in Mandurah is going to be great."

Rioli will play primarily forward against Fremantle and could be rotated through the midfield at times, as he has been in match practice this pre-season.

Lade said the coaches would be satisfied as long as the 18-year-old stuck to his role.

"If he gets a couple of touches, a couple of tackles, a couple of shots on goal we'll be happy," Lade said.

"Everyone is probably watching because of the last name, but for him it's about playing his role in the team and I'm sure the rest will take care of itself.

"He's a very level-headed kid, he lives with the coach so he's got to be."

The Tigers made a push at the end of last season to bolster their inside midfield stocks, and will unveil former Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Townsend on Friday night.

The tough ball-winner will pair with second-year midfielder Corey Ellis in a midfield that will be missing Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin.

"We got Townsend in for a reason and we're looking forward to seeing what he can do," Lade said.

"We think he's been holding back a little bit in training against our own players, which is a bit scary.

"Corey Ellis is one who improved over the season and has now had a full pre-season, so we're looking forward to seeing what he can do."

Lade has senior coaching ambitions and will take the reins from Damien Hardwick on Friday night, with the regular coach to work from the boundary.

The former Port Adelaide ruckman, who is entering his seventh season as an assistant coach at Punt Road Oval, wasn't planning any radical surprises.

"Not much changes with the way we play, so I'm not going to go out there and put all our forwards in the backline and our backs in the forward line," he said.

"For me it's more the experience of the whole week … and if I don't like it I probably wont be a senior coach."

Floss' pre-game interview:

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2016-02-18/nab-challenge-1-vlastuin-excited-for-freo-test

* It’s kind of hard because they’ve never done this.  But it’s a great learning experience for them, showing what they’ve done all over pre-season. We’ve still got a couple of old heads, like Chappy and hopefully they can learn a fair bit off them. It’s just getting used to travelling and then training straight off the plane.  And then, the night before, it’s a bit different because you’re not at home. So, it’s just all those types of learnings.

* It’s definitely more exciting.  You never really want to hurt your teammates in the intra-club. It should be a good game. It should be a good challenge. We’ll definitely back in the likes of Jake Batchelor and Dave Astbury.  Looking forward to what Nathan Broad can bring in his home town, too.  Georgie Castagna will get a go as well, so it’s pretty exciting.

Heat policy won't be implemented for Freo-Tigers clash

AFL.com.au
February 19, 2016

THE AFL's extreme heat policy won't come into play for Friday night's NAB Challenge clash between Fremantle and Richmond in Mandurah, despite the temparature forecast to reach almost 30 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a maximum temperature of 29 degrees in Mandurah, located 72km south of Perth.

The match is scheduled for 4:10pm AWST with the temperature set to peak just after the first bounce.

The League is however, monitoring the weather forecast in Adelaide ahead of Sunday's NAB Challenge match between Adelaide and West Coast.

The mercury is expected to hit 36 degrees, with the match scheduled to start at 1:35pm ACDT.

The AFL will make a final decision on Friday afternoon on whether the extreme heat policy will be activated.

In the event it is, the quarter-time and half-time breaks are likely to be extended.

The average age of the Fremantle side playing tonight is 26.2 years. Conversely, Richmond's average age for this evening is just 22.8 years of age.

The Tigers are blooding nine players who have yet to taste senior AFL football, including all three players Daniel Rioli, Oleg Markov and Nathan Broad - drafted by the club in the 2015 National Draft.

The main thing hopefully tonight is no injuries (touchwood).

If the young cubs show something then that's a bonus.
