Reece McKenzie released from Richmond to help recoveryJON RALPH

July 2, 2016 RICHMOND believes releasing key forward Reece McKenzie to play VAFA football will aid his recovery from a two-year battle with depression.
The 197cm son of Carlton premiership player Warren McKenzie was likened to Tom Hawkins for his marking prowess when drafted in late 2014.
But having played 15 VFL games last year, McKenzie was given personal leave early this season and has now been granted a clearance with Old Marcellin.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was a huge fan of the contested marking forward, who will step away from AFL footy to prioritise his mental health.
McKenzie’s manager Nick Gieschen lauded Richmond’s response to his issues.
“His brother plays at Old Marcellin as well and he’s excited about pulling the boots on and helping out his old club,” Gieschen said.
“Richmond and Dan Richardson have been fantastic for him these past two years.”
As a junior prodigy McKenzie kicked 10.2 for the Northern Knights in his final TAC Cup year, then kicked a school record 16.4 in a school game for Old Marcellin.
But he is one of an increasing group of AFL players who are becoming open about their battle with depression and mental health issues.
