Bombers ‘don’t deserve Anzac Day’Herald-Sun
March 7, 2016CHANNEL 7 commentator Dennis Cometti says Essendon has not earned the right to play on Anzac Day this season.
The popular caller has also suggested the Bombers should have been ruled out of the season altogether after 34 past and present players were banned for 12 months for using the banned drug Thymosin Beta 4.
The AFL has allowed the club to recruit 10 top-up players to field a team this year.
Writing a column in The West Australian, Cometti questioned why an alternative — a season without Essendon — wasn’t considered.
And he said even if the Bombers were allowed to play this year, they had forfeited the right to play Collingwood on Anzac Day.
The match threatens to be a blowout if Saturday’s NAB Challenge results are anything to go by. The undermanned Bombers kicked just three goals on the way to an 87-point loss to Geelong.
“What the heck are they doing playing in this year’s (Anzac Day) game?” Cometti said.
“Unfortunately, the players running around last Saturday don’t deserve the honour of being centre stage on one of footy’s biggest days.
“Of course, it’s too late to change anything. In this situation timing was everything. Certainly it made things difficult for the AFL.
“But I can’t help thinking somehow this year the Bombers should have been sidelined for the greater good.
“The club might cry double jeopardy but I find it odd no contingency plan ever saw the light of day.”
