Cotchin open to playing a tag role

Herald-Sun
March 18,2016

TRENT Cotchin says he is open to playing a run-with role at stages this season, if it helps the club progress towards its elusive first finals win in 15 years.

Former Tiger star Matthew Richardson said on 3AW this week that he would like to see Cotchin take on a few tagging roles this season, to add an extra string to his capabilities.

“Yeah, I am open to anything,” Cotchin said of Richardson’s suggestion.

“I think the great thing about our group now is that if you are given a role before the game, a lot of us stick to it.

“If that goes a long way to us winning games of footy, I think everyone will put their hands up.”

Cotchin said he was prepared to do whatever it takes to expunge the pain from last year’s elimination final loss to North Melbourne, and his own poor performance that day.

He came in for heavy criticism after the Tigers’ third straight elimination final loss, with some questioning if he was the right man for the captaincy.

Cotchin, 26 next month, said the external criticism hadn’t fazed him, but that he had worked exceptionally hard over summer to be the best he can be in 2016.

“Everyone has their opinion, footy is a big sport, (so) there is a lot of commentators and media personalities out there, and that’s the reality of the game,” he said.

“If it (the criticism) hurt, I would probably be hiding under a rock.”

“I have got the people that I trust and speak to day to day, whether they are at the footy club or it may be as simple as my dad.

“The reality is that everyone has their own form of leading. I see leadership as something that has to come naturally, but it is also something that happens over time.”

Cotchin expects a young, enthusiastic Carlton to provide a serious challenge next Thursday night in the AFL season-opener at the MCG.

“It’s Round 1, they’ve got a new coach and a lot of new faces, so we are looking forward to the occasion,” he said.

Memo to club: Don't hire M. Richardson as a midfield coach. Thank You.

Yer put one of your best players and best midfielder as a dirty tagger. Especially when we are about 3 genuine mids short.  :help
Would play him as deep forward more and more if he is getting beaten in the middle. Very good mark overhead for a player of his size.
He could be very damaging as long as they isolate him.

If Cotchin becomes a tagger does that mean he won't do those bloody infuriating dinky 20 metre kicks anymore? Will he able to embarrass the best midfielders in the league by reducing their total possessions to only 9 especially if we are playing a final against them?
The club that keeps giving.

Cotchin hunts the ball. Telling him to tag and play against his instincts is stupid. Won't happen.
