Cotchin conceded key forward Tyrone Vickery should have returned to the field more quickly after spending 11 minutes stranded on the bench against Hawthorn.

He had just kicked two goals in as many minutes, with Cotchin saying his aerobic makeup had counted against him.

“I would love to see him staying out there and hopefully nabbing another one or two goals but part of the rotation policy means sometimes you need a rest,’’ he told Channel 7’s Game Day.

“I think the (coaches box would overrule rotations) in most cases but he might have been on the field for 15 minutes and knowing Ty he’s more of a power athlete than an endurance athlete.”

Maybe if he shaved off 3 or 4 kilograms of that stuffing hair he could run for a bit longer.

More evidence that across the board we are not fit enough compared to the rest of the competition.
Fitness staff needs to be sacked too.

Yeah, Ty was really slaying them eh?  One Joe the Goose handball receive in the goalsquare for an easy one, then a quick kick lands in his lap after he let his opponent have front spot ...
Why wouldn't you take him off?   :-\

So it doesn't matter how he got them?  Really?  Setting the bar nice & low there.
Ask Ty how many touches he had in the first half & for the whole game?  How many tackles, eh Ty?
I'll guarantee you that Hardwick knows exactly why he dragged him, a couple of super-soft cheapies don't change the fact that he was playing extremely poorly.  Forget the mediaspeak, Hardwick knows what he sent Ty out there to do & it wasn't being achieved.  Why not drag him off?

Out bodied and out position Gibson in that marking contest, no point trying to twist things just give credit where it's due. It's nice it happened for once

Perhaps in theory

In reality Tyrone is an average player who relies a lot on confidence

To drag him cause he was statistically due for a rotation shows little football understaning for the coach that claims he did watch that part of the game ...

He was playing key forward it's not like he'd un a marathon

He often has low possession games or efforts with few one percenters , that not the reason he was benched
Then he grabbed two chopsticks and stuck them in his mouth , pretending to be a walrus

On and off-field brain fades

Damien Hardwick (Richmond)
The Tiger coach needs to not only question his players' performances this season, but his own as well. On Friday night after Ty Vickery had just kicked his second goal in a few minutes to give Richmond the lead in the second quarter, the forward was substituted off for most of the remainder of the term. Coincidentally or not, in that time Hawthorn kicked three goals to take a handy advantage into the main break. When asked post-game about the move, Hardwick fumbled out that he 'couldn't exactly recall' it, that it was tough to get players off the ground sometimes, and that players come off when they are 'due for rotations'. You would think the way his side is going he and his coaching staff might be worrying a little less about pre-programmed interchanges and more about keeping the players on the field who are doing the job for them at particular points in games.

Gibson looked pretty happy he was off. Took him a long time to return too. The point is not how many goals he would of kicked, it's he was denied a chance Of kicking any ... when he was hot , something that is rare. Which is the 4000th example of the off field staff having nfi of footballing related activities

"I don't remember that part" of the match is the cherry on top. Lunatic ... What the bells he doing on the box if not watching the game

It's the cream on top. Not the cherry.
Why the media has stayed away from that is anybody's guess  :P

Longer bench breaks here to stay: Vickery

AFL.com.au
11 May 2016

THE DAYS of short stints on the interchange bench are over and players need to get used to longer breaks within games, according to Richmond forward Ty Vickery.

Vickery's 10-minute spell during last Friday night's loss to Hawthorn was one of the main talking points of the match, with the tall forward taken from the ground after kicking back-to-back goals halfway through the second quarter.

The length of his break was unusual and Vickery admitted the team had struggled to find a rotation to get him back on, making the break longer than it should have been.

Still, under the interchange cap of 90 in 2016, he said players needed to be prepared for longer breaks as clubs search for the right balance with their rotations.

"It probably ended up being a bit longer, we just couldn't get a rotation for me to get back on," Vickery told AFL.com.au.

"We've got scheduled times thereabouts to come off, and obviously I'd just kicked a few goals before it.

"That's the way we operate … and whether it's the right or wrong call, it certainly didn't have an impact on the result of the match.

"As a forward you always want to be out there, not sitting on the bench, so you can contribute."

Vickery came to the bench after his second goal, which gave Richmond a two-point lead and significant momentum for the first time in the match.

The Tigers went goalless while he was on the pine, with Hawthorn kicking three goals to round out the quarter and take back the lead going into half time.

While the sight of a forward coming from the ground after kicking a goal frustrates fans, Vickery said it was a necessary part of the game.

"The reality is it's a really long game we play and you have to rotate to give yourself a rest but also to get people on – that's your role in a team," he said.

"If you're a midfielder and you get a couple of clearances in a row and have to come off, you certainly don't want to when you're feeling like you're involved in the game.

"Clubs are still probably finding the best way to go about it this year … they're confronted with a completely different set of rules to previous years.

"The days of having two-minute spells or three-minute spells have probably gone. It's up to four, five or six minutes now with fewer of them."
