Here we come! / Can we make the top eight? [merged]
« on: May 15, 2016, 11:47:09 AM »
Our half step back rebuild is complete. We've got games into some quality young kids who are now understanding how we want to play and what is required of an AFL footballer. By no means are we finished however, we will still be playing a blend of kids with older stop gap players but this is where the improvement begins. We will now be able to weed out the ones we don't want/need anymore and they will be gone at seasons end while the kids will continue to develop and get games. It's time for our 2 steps forward to begin...

I had a silly thought. ....and maybe I am clutching at straws.

Last year we were playing like poo ( 2-4) and found ourselves training Collingwood by 20 points at quarter time . We then put on a 6 goal second quarter which seemed to spark our season. We won 13 of the next 16.

Lets face it - we have been horrendous all year....But the start to the final quarter last night was so exhilarating it could kick start something.  :pray :pray

Having said that , although we do have some winnable games coming up our draw this season is incredibly tough.

Do we want or need it though and how will that impact on us next year and thereafter. Let's face it, for the last 7 rounds we have just about all said that we don't have the depth, the coach, the game plan or the players. While last night was great and it's great to to win, would we rather have a poor year, get the top picks, trades and some free agency and go for it next year?

Just throwing out there RCGG.

In theory it is reasonable - but for this to work, the reliance is on dimmer and the FD to actually make the tough calls on consistently inconsistent 'spuds' that keep getting games and on that front, Im not confident at all.

But yes, last night menadue made some shocking errors early doors but worked his way into the game and came good. C. Ellis is looking much more comfortable, rioli has settled in nicely. Would love for the likes of Lennon, Conca and Yarran to cement themselves and players like Markov, Broad, Butler, Moore, Chol to push and get gametime as the season progreses

Yeah, I don't expect us to have another year like that but what's footy without some excitement. Our two steps forward aren't all going to be this year and I imagine it involves having a good dip at early-ish picks at the end of this year. Our half step back also turned into more of a full step back because of injuries (and a certain players suspension) hitting us harder than expected.

Could we win the next five?
Potentially we could win 4 of them if we play well but I'd like to beat North and Geelong when we play them. It's been too long.

The club that keeps giving.

Would rather we play well. If we are going to lure Hurley over, finishing below Essendon isn't going to help our cause.

Would rather the team bust a gut with a half decent playing style/game plan and try and win and if we fall to 9th so be it.

Yep honestly getting pick 5 VS pick 10 shouldn't be such a big deal. Draft is always deep enough for a first round pick!

And it's the trade/free agency targets that we need to nail to transform our team. Drafting 1-2 good kids/year won't help us contend while guys like Jack, Rance and Lids are in the team because they will take at least 2-3 years to be of any consistent use.
