How does a club with over 50 million dollar turnover and majority of full time footballers & paid full time staff lose to a stand alone VFL team with a bunch of part time players, coaches and administrators with very limited funds?

Easy

They wanted it more.

More desperate, more committed

Result then takes care of itself

The entire RfC could learn something from that approach

agree, the worst part is there are at least 3-4 spot up for grabs in the snr's next week....

VFL Tigers out-muscled by Lions

richmondfc.com.au
6 June 2016

Richmond’s VFL side didn’t register its first major until the two-minute mark of the last quarter in a 33-point loss to Coburg at Piranha Park on Sunday.

In drizzly, soggy conditions the Lions simply outworked and out-hunted the Tigers early in the first term and ran away with the game thereafter, finishing 9.10 (64) to 3.13 (31).

Going into the game, Richmond knew that a positive result hinged on winning the contested ball given the fact that Coburg was VFL No.1 for clearances, centre clearances and hitouts to advantage.

It was drummed into the Tigers during the week and pre-game that the “contest is king” and unfortunately at quarter-time, they found themselves -19 in contested possessions.

In the opening ten minutes, Coburg continually led their Richmond counterparts to the ball and were much cleaner in the clinches and efficacious moving forward.

Richmond struggled to win the ball, and when they did, they struggled to control it for any meaningful length of time, as the Lions made the most of their chances inside 50.

The Tigers’ will and intent to tackle could not be questioned as Marcon, Conca, Townsend and Short continually put their bodies on the line in the opening term, registering a +9 tackle count.

One Tiger who paid the price for courage was ruckman Ivan Soldo who chased down a ground ball, came off second best, and was consequently taken from the field in the arms of the trainers.

Soldo took no further part in the game.

The Lions held a handy 14-point lead at quarter-time, which was stretched to 26 points very early in the second term courtesy of two goals from Ahmed Saad.

Coburg slotted four goals on the trot in the second term as they skipped to a 37-point lead at the main change.

Much like the opening term, Richmond tackled well, but just couldn’t get hands on the footy and the weight of numbers for Coburg going forward won out.

Liam McBean had a chance in the third term to kick the Tigers’ first, but his set-shot drifted wide in what was a disappointing day for Richmond’s forwards.

In a positive for Richmond, they were able to win the contested possessions (+3) and inside 50 count for the first time in the match, but simply couldn’t hit the scoreboard.

McBean redeemed himself early in the final term as his left-foot snap dribbled through and the Tigers were finally on the board.

Their first major kicked the Tigers into gear as Reece Conca found space where there was none and slotted his first and some smart work by zippy forward Dan Butler handed Richmond its third.

The Tigers won the final term by 11 points and added some respectability to the scoreboard on what was a very gloomy day.

Richmond VFL coach Craig McRae was frank in his assessment of the side’s early work in the contest, which ultimately cost it in the end.

“I thought in the first five minutes their (Coburg) contest was stronger than ours”, McRae said.

“We addressed that before the game, we addressed it yesterday (Saturday) going into the game, because we knew it was a strength of theirs.

“We got out-muscled, out-hunted and outplayed in the first five minutes and it was two goals before we even woke up to ourselves.”

McRae also highlighted the side’s issues forward of centre that will need to be addressed moving forward.

“It’s been a constant struggle for us over the last two or three games,” he said.

“Last week particularly we didn’t capitalise on forward entries...and then again today we tried all sorts of things.

“We had players up higher, we had players back deeper, but at the end of the day we’re not winning enough contests in there - in the air or at ground level.”

Reece Conca thrust himself further into AFL contention with another stellar performance, amassing 32 disposals, 21 contested, laying ten tackles and kicking a major.

Mabior Chol started positively as a key-back once again, and at times proved impassable, with his defiant spoiling and ability to restrict standing out.

Chol was shifted forward in the final term, providing an aerial presence and won a handful of contests.

The Tigers will look to bounce back against Werribee next Sunday, June 12, in a curtain raiser at Punt Road Oval, with the first bounce at 12:30pm.

Richmond’s VFL coach Craig McRae provides an exclusive summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players who featured in last Sunday’s match against Coburg.

AFL-listed players

Reece Conca
36 disposals, 21 contested possessions, five clearances, seven tackles, one goal

Reece was clearly our best player on the ground. He had 36 disposals, including 21 contested possessions. He actually started quite slowly, but he really picked it up after quarter-time. He looks ready for an AFL opportunity, he’s playing well above the level.

Jacob Townsend
21 disposals, 12 contested possessions, eight tackles

Continued to show improvement. He’s not playing above the level as much as we’d like, but he’s certainly in okay form.

Jayden Short
20 kicks, 11 contested possessions, five marks

Played across half-back, he’s using the ball really well. He actually had 20 disposals — all of them kicks, and most of them effective. Played above the level, for probably half the game, and looks ready for a return to AFL duties.

Adam Marcon
19 disposals, 13 contested possessions, eight tackles

Has had a couple of quiet weeks by his standards. Only the 19 disposals and laid eight tackles, but didn't really have the impact he’s had in recent weeks. We’re looking for a spike this week.

Connor Menadue
18 disposals, 13 contested possessions, nine tackles, five clearances

Returned from AFL duties and played on the wing. They were difficult conditions, wet and slogging conditions, but he still had 18 disposals, nine tackles and five clearances, so he certainly did contribute and impact the game.

Andrew Moore
15 disposals, 10 contested possessions, four marks

Played more forward this week, looking at a different role for him. He had moments, but we’re looking for more impact from him.

Nathan Broad
13 disposals, four marks, three tackles

Played wing and across half-back. He was better when he went to half-back than when he was on the wing. He looks at times like he is dominating his opponent and using the ball well, but we just need that consistently for four quarters.

Ivan Maric
42 hit-outs, 13 disposals, five clearances, five tackles

Had a really good battle with their ruckman, claiming 42 hit-outs, five clearances and five tackles. He continues to play his role well. After half-time I thought he was a really important player for us.

Liam McBean
13 disposals, 18 hit-outs, five tackles, one goal

Had to go in and play second ruck when Ivan Soldo was concussed early. It actually sparked his intensity in the game. He had 18 hit-outs and five tackles and it was the first time in recent weeks he played ruck and actually showed something for us in that position. He finished the game with 1.3 too, so it could have been a bigger outcome for him.

Jason Castagna
11 disposals, six tackles, six contested possessions

Played forward for the game. He laid six tackles, but didn’t have the impact, and looked a little bit fumbly at times losing a few contests. It’s an area of his game he’s usually good at, so we’re looking for him to improve that.

Dan Butler
10 disposals, seven contested possessions, three tackles, one goal

Had a frustrating game. Another who lost contests and was a bit fumbly at ground level. He needs to improve in that area and be better disciplined.

Oleg Markov
Ten disposals, seven contested possessions, five tackles

Similar to Connor Menadue, he played across the wing and looked dangerous at times. He had little impact, with only the ten disposals. A tough day for him.

Nathan Drummond
Eight disposals, three marks, five tackles

Second game back and played three quarters this week. He had less impact than last in difficult conditions and his opponent looked dangerous, so a few lessons to be learnt from this week.

Callum Moore
Eight disposals, three marks, five tackles

Disappointing game from him. He played from behind in wet conditions and was second to the ball and didn’t play his role. A lot of lessons to be learnt for him this week.

Mabior Chol
Seven disposals, five contested possessions, two marks

Played most of the game down back. He won or neutralised three-quarters of his contests and is showing signs he’s capable of playing as a key-back for only the second week in his career. We moved him forward and he took a couple of contested marks and is showing some good signs of development.

Ivan Soldo

Was unfortunately concussed in his first contest and took no further part in the game.

VFL-listed players

Jacob Ballard
22 disposals, 15 contested possessions, five clearances, eight tackles

Jacob was our second highest possession-getter. He continues to work hard and we’ve been really pleased with his endeavour, with 15 contested possessions and eight tackles. I’m really happy with what he’s contributing.

Sam Darley
22 disposals, 15 kicks, nine uncontested possessions

Returned from state duties and showed good leadership for us, he’s another important player. He just needs to tidy-up a couple of little things defensively, but offensively he’s a real weapon for us.

Ash Morris
11 disposals, six contested possessions, three tackles

Played across half-back. He wasn’t as good as in the first two games he played for us. He was a little bit fumbly and his opponent looked dangerous at times, so he’s better than that and we’re looking for a spike this week.

Dan Coffield
Eight disposals, four tackles

Continues to defend really well and play his role. Happy with his progress as our 23rd player.

Anthony Scott
Eight disposals, six contested possessions, six tackles

Small forward who laid six tackles and picked up eight possessions, but didn’t impact the scoreboard.

Ryan Gale
Six disposals, four tackles, two marks

Key-back who I thought was disappointing on the day being second to the ball and went to ground a couple of times. He’s one of our leaders and we know he’s a better player than that.

Kelvin Williams
Six disposals, five tackles

Played his first game in difficult conditions for a small or medium forward and we’ll look for better output from him in his next opportunity.

Talented midfielder Reece Conca seems set to be recalled to Richmond’s senior line-up for Sunday’s Round 12 clash with Gold Coast, following a standout performance at VFL level last weekend.

Conca dominated for the Tigers’ VFL team in its 33-point loss to Coburg, racking up 36 disposals, including a highly-impressive 21 contested possessions in the wet conditions, along with five clearances, seven tackles and a goal.

“Reece was clearly our best player on the ground,” said Richmond VFL coach Craig McRae.

“He actually started quite slowly, but he really picked it up after quarter-time.

“He looks ready for an AFL opportunity . . . he’s playing well above the level.”

Conca has now played three consecutive games in the VFL on the comeback trail from a severe hamstring complaint that derailed his start to season 2016.

The 23-year-old has managed just three senior appearances with Richmond out of a possible 34, during the past season and a half, due to injuries.

Butler has been suspended for a week by the VFL tribunal.

His striking charge was listed as intentional, low and to the body. He would've been reprimanded but got a week due to having a previous charge in the past 12 months.

I have watched Butler play on multiple occasions and I really cant see him still being on our list next year. Has a strong body and can run but that's where it stops. Don't want to be too harsh on him but he is miles from a player like Short who possesses natural ability and footy smarts. Disappointing it hasn't worked out thus far.

I hope so, he looked pretty good there on the weekend. Move CEllis to a wing with time in the middle.

Conca to the other HBF. I think he was good there during pre season too.

I think Broad might be given a chance too. He has been pretty consistent the last 3 weeks. Straight swap with Batchelor.

And if Vlastuin plays, play him in the pivot all day. Let him rack up 30 and get some confidence. No more backline this year!!
