Our next skipper

Current speculation and rumours have either Deledio or Coughlan penciled in as our next skipper. Also, I see Patto (from some of his TAC Cup games) and Tambling (from some of his U18 carnival games) as potential candidates for the captaincy as they exhibit some excellent leadership skills.

We could follow Essendon's tranistion style of skippers and have Sugar step down as captain in 3 to 4 years, and then pass it on to Cogs (he will be about 26 at this stage) who will have lead for another 4 years or so. And once Cogs reaches 30 he can pass the captaincy on to Lids who will be about 26 himself by that time. Or we could follow Sydney's current system (but have two co-captains in Lids and Cogs rather than 3).

IMO either path we follow is fine as both Lids and Cogs would be excellent skippers.

I don't think Wallace is a fan of multiple captains but I could be wrong.

Lids is only 18 and into his second year next year so unless Sugar captains for the next 4 years I think someone else will be before him. Even Hird played for around 5 years before he got the job at the Bombers.

Cogs appeared the obvious choice to pass the baton onto the next generation but after missing a year of footy through his groin problems he should be allowed to get a few seasons in a row under his belt first. You need your captain out on the field.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone less-obvious got it after Sugar like Newman or Tuck. Someone who consistently does their job well week-in. That would really stick it up the Hawks if Tucky became captain of the Tiges  .

If Bowden has another consistent year next year he could conceivably get it. I'd be happy for Johnson to have it for the next two or three years though. By that stage we should know about the Deledios, Tamblings, Myers and where they fit into the leadership picture.

Cogs doesn't seem a leader to me. He is strong, hard at it, courageous, and gives a good example to the others about how to attack the footy, but he isn't vociferous enough and doesn't have a commanding presence. Also he doesn't seem to be the most tactically astute. Still, we could do worse.

The coaches seem to love him and talk about him as a leader and future captain

Bowden & Brown are in the same age bracket to Johnson (27ish). Can't see either of them getting it. Would seem silly to pass the captaicy 'sideways' if you like. Richo was a has been a great player the but the boat has passed for him to have the top job.

Whilst I've heard Richo talking up Deledio as a future leader the natural progession seems:  Johnson --> Cogs --> Deledio. That of course seems along way and is just speculation. Hopfully Johnson who I rate as a good leader has it for another 2-4 years. Cogs I think is the the next inline to be leader. He is in thre right age bracket (24 or so) and has the abilty and displays some good leadership skills. I reckon he seems the sort of player that will get better if he was asked to captian.

If a Newman or Tuck could take there game to the next level over the next couple years they would be in contention.

I doubt Tuck is captain material, i've just got the feeling that his not a natural leader, that and his media skills might need some touching up/censoring (for people who watched the Brisbane game, you know what i mean!  )

Yeah! Tuck appears to be one of those guys who lets his footy do his talking, he is one of those guys who are a key to success but aren't usually in the media like Newman

disagree here guys, there are multitudes of captains from all codes who lead from the front but are 'silent' media types, off the top of my head.... mal meninga(rugby league), ivan lendl(davis cup campaigns), ian murray(americas cup) im sure there are many others including our current captain jonno and tucky's own father, michael, so to me its not necessary to be a good media person to be a great captain. most often than not its your inspiring deeds on the field that make you a great captain for your team, not the medias portrayal of you.

True, but i haven't heard anybody talk about Tucky's leadership skills whereas for blokes like Lids, Cogs and Patto they get wraps from the media about the leadership skills
