...DION TO GO ON, YOUNGSTER SET FOR EXTENSION

RICHMOND has a number of decisions to make on its senior players at the end of the season but Dion Prestia looks set to play on in 2025.

The Tigers are facing a fascinating off-season, with out-of-contract gun Liam Baker expected to move west and Daniel Rioli (Gold Coast) and Shai Bolton (Fremantle) also attracting significant interest.

Champion Tiger Dustin Martin has been weighing interest from the Suns, while former co-captain Dylan Grimes is expected to retire after back surgery ruled him out for the rest of the season. Dual premiership wingman Kamdyn McIntosh also remains out of contract.

Prestia is out of contract at the end of the season but is understood to be keen to go on next year, with an extension for 2025 in progress.

The 31-year-old former Suns midfielder has again had soft-tissue concerns this year but has returned for the Tigers' past three games and performed well in adding more experience to the club's younger core.

Prestia's move from Gold Coast to Richmond at the end of the 2016 season has been one of the best trades of the past decade, with him going on to feature in all three of the Tigers' flag wins.

Meanwhile, Tigers youngster Jack Ross is set to pen a two-year extension. Ross was due to come out of contract at the end of this season but a new deal would take him through to the end of 2026.

He has played five senior games this season for a total of 68 since being picked at the 2018 draft. – Callum Twomey, Riley Beveridge

I was dead set on him retiring but seeing him play has made me think it's OK to go 1 more year if the money is right.

We're going to lose players to trades and retirements.

If he does a 3 months hammy early then hopefully he gives us a MSD option though.

With the mass exodus happening, we need him to be semi competitive. Hope he can play a decent block of games without doing a hamstring in the first quarter.

Another one I’ve softened on. The list turnover is probably already capped for next year. No harm giving him another year even if he only plays half the games and isn’t the same player anymore.

Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia has signed on for a ninth year with the Club, putting pen to paper on a contract for the 2025 season.

Prestia, 31, has played 130 games for the Tigers, adding to the 95 he played with Gold Coast in the first six years of his AFL career.

The consistent midfielder averaged 22 disposals across 13 matches this season. Prestia ranked #3 at the Club for clearances per game, #4 for contested possessions, and #5 for effective disposals.

Prestia also offers valuable wisdom to younger midfielders, given his AFL experience, both on the field and at the Club.

Richmond General Manager, Football Talent - Blair Hartley said Prestia continued to perform at a high level.

“Dion played some terrific football this year and is a valuable and experienced leader around our young and emerging midfielders,” Hartley said.

“His leadership and knowledge of the game make him a valuable asset both to our team on gameday and to our entire list on the training track.”

Hartley added praise for the former No. 9 draft pick in the 2010 AFL National Draft’s longevity in the game.

It’s hilarious. Made my crappy day….
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Barrett from his Sliding Doors column.

IF ...
Dion Prestia pings another hamstring … in the Grand Final sprint

THEN ...

he may not play again. I wonder if the Tigers' fitness staff are fully across his inclusion in the race.
