Mick Malthouse names the five most influential players in the AFL

Mick Malthouse,
Herald Sun
May 27, 2018

The influence I’m interested in is the type of player who won’t win the awards or even necessarily the accolades, but whose sheer presence makes their side a better team.

A player of influence brings his teammates into the game, and takes the heat off the stars to allow them to shine.

The five players I’m naming here are the reasons their teams are winning and heading towards finals.

QUIET ACHIEVER - TOBY NANKERVIS

But if I’m to name just one more influential player, then it’s Richmond’s Toby Nankervis.

In a side with Dustin Martin, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt, his name isn’t often mentioned in the same breath, but Nankervis is the quiet achiever at Richmond, and he is as highly important to the team as its stars are.

He is a mobile big man, with a strong mark and a good shot on goal. An aggressive tackler, hardworking and completely team oriented.

Ruckman Shaun Hampson hasn’t been available to play senior football for over 12-months with a back injury, so the Tigers’ experienced ruck stocks are limited and Nankervis’ back up is the190cm tall Shaun Grigg — which basically means all the ruck work has fallen to him.

His ability to play as a lone ruckman allows Richmond to field an extra runner.

His demolition job of Grundy was the reason for the Tigers’ dominance in that Round 6 match, and proof that the Tigers are a much better team when Nankervis is in full swing.

Toby tries some 'tricks' to counter ruck foes

Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
Jun 8, 2018

WHEN you're an undersized ruckman, you naturally have to find an alternative to bashing the ball out of stoppages to make an impact.

At 199cm, that's exactly what Richmond's Toby Nankervis has done this year to become a weapon in the centre square.

The former Swan is ranked 11th in the competition for winning the first possession from the centre bounce.

What makes that feat more remarkable is the fact he's the best-ranked ruckman in that lot, with midfielders Tom Mitchell, Nat Fyfe, Patrick Cripps, Dustin Martin, Josh Kennedy (Sydney), Ben Cunnington, Lachie Neale, Bryce Gibbs, Luke Parker and Nathan Jones ahead of him.

"I don't think it's something I've consciously worked on," Nankervis told AFL.com.au this week.

"I have to have a few more tricks than blokes that are a bit taller and can jump a bit more.

"I've got to use a few of my tricks in the centre bounce."

From this year's best-performing ruckmen, Nankervis is the same height as Stef Martin; the rest of the field measure above them.

Aaron Sandilands (211cm), Jarrod Witts (209cm), Max Gawn (208cm) and Brodie Grundy (203cm) are among those with a significant height advantage.

It's why Nankervis has identified the need to specialise in what he can do around the ground rather than focus solely on what happens when in a one-on-one tussle with a fellow big man.

This season, he's winning more possessions (his average from last year is up from 14.7 per game to 17.7) and he's taking more contested marks.

"That's a massive part of the way we want to play at Richmond," he said.

"I think it's just a bit of confidence that I've got from last year, playing some senior footy, and some natural improvement I think."

But with more involvement comes the natural risk of giving away more free kicks.

Nankervis has given away the most free kicks in the competition this season, with a total of 31, ahead of Cripps (29) and Ben Jacobs (27).

He said he was working on why he gets penalised so much for holding the man, with his other prolific crime holding on to a player too long after laying a tackle.

"'Dimma' has mentioned it a couple of times," he said.

"It's not something I'm proud of but something I have to obviously manage.

"It is frustrating at times and something I have to continually work on every week."

Nankervis said he loves the challenge of being the Tigers' lone ruckman in the current side but enjoys the assistance his pinch-hitting support act of Shaun Grigg and Josh Caddy can offer.

He says youngster Ivan Soldo is more than ready to come in and replace him if required, and with an eye to working on his own forward craft, says there's no reason they can't play in the same side this year.

After playing all but one game last season (he missed round seven with a one-game suspension), the 23-year-old isn't planning on needing a scheduled rest outside of the Tigers' round 14 bye.

"I think everyone is a bit tired and sore at this point of the year," he said.

"I've had some massive help from the fitness staff. They've really helped me out through the pre-season and even in the season have managed my loads a bit.

"Touch wood I feel really fit and healthy at the moment so hopefully I can keep that going.

"I managed to get through a season last year … hopefully I can get through this year."

SEN rates Nank as the the tenth best ruckman in the league.

1. Grundy
2. Gawn
3. Naitanui
4. Ryder
5. Stefan Martin
6. McEvoy
7. Kreuzer
8. Goldstein
9. Jarrod Witts

10. Toby Nankervis

The premiership ruckman doesn't have the same hit-out numbers as the others on this list, only averaging 22 per game. It's what he does around the ground, grinding his opponents down and getting plenty of the footy himself that puts him on this list. Nankervis gives the Tigers a toughness and an x-factor in the middle that few other ruckmen on this list provide.

Kruezer at his best is in the top 3-4 rucks no qualms - but hes playing injured this season and has been pretty crap, nowhere near the top 10

On form this season

Grundy
Gawn
NN
Martin
Nankervis

I'm happy for people to underrate Nank. The guy is a jet with around the ground player. He is like the bizarro version of Hampson. Concedes the tap outs but kills it with his tackles and getting involved with general play. His kicking is pretty good too. Almost unruckman like

Had an awesome game tonight. Easily beat Sinclair all night a I reckon by the last quarter he was to scared to compete against Nank the tank.

He might not win the taps or even hit them to advantage but he is an absolute bull hitting the opposition midfield at every opportunity with big bone crunching tackles, you can see their midfield wince in pain as he pounds them at the stoppage.

Still a kid but a mans man that loves to hurt people and can take a nice grab when required.

Great game Nank!  :clapping

In his 50th AFL game (38 with Richmond and 12 for Sydney), Nankervis finished with 18 disposals, four marks, three clearances, three rebound-50s, a game-high 10 tackles and his season-high total of 41 hit-outs. Sinclair, in comparison, had 10 disposals, one mark, five tackles and 39 hit-outs.

After 15 rounds of season 2018, Nankervis is averaging 16.8 disposals, 4.1 marks, 3.3 clearances, 3.9 tackles and 24.1 hit-outs per game.

Those statistical numbers stack up well against the very best ruckmen going around in the competition . . . Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy averages 21.0 disposals, 4.0 marks, 5.1 clearances, 5.1 tackles and 38.6 hit-outs, while Melbourne’s Max Gawn averages 16.8 disposals, 4.6 marks, 2.5 clearances, 2.9 tackles and 47.1 hit-outs.

Will be AA ruckman one day. Will be the best in the league sooner than the experts think. I personally think he’s better the Gawn now.
