Well tagging isn’t beneath Lions and it’s scored them a GF berth.
Graham or not, I am sick of seeing the oppo best mids run free

Strongly agree.

Hoping Ooze isn’t shy of a tag.

My observation is that he is highly rated in the playing group and often plays a selfless role, shouldn’t be so quick to criticise…

Duncan Kellaway was a sensational tagger, nicknamed the glove FFS
Chris Bond
Despite rating him about as highly as Dio, Daniel Jackson was an effective tagger and definitely superior at that role

And who can forget the great Tony Free!!!

Oh how quick they forget

Graham best tagger we’ve ever had  :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Happy to continue this conversation if we are going to offer serious suggestions. Let's be clear a tagger is a shut down player that sacrifices their game and stats to shut down an opponent. Let's not confuse a tagger as a midfielder that runs both ways, which is what I'd classify Free and Bond. I still thank that's an unfair label on both as taggers, Bond for me was more of a wingman anyway.

Duncan Kellaway a tagger? He was a defender. A great one, and Wayne Carey's bunny.

Daniel Jackson was a tagger absolutely but to suggest he's better than Graham is not something I don't agree with. He's not far off in terms of ability but Graham has better runs on board in finals.

Chris Bond and Tony Free weren't taggers, at absolute best 2 way running midfielders as mentioned before

Regardless there isn't any clear obvious ones, so I think suggesting he's our best ever tagger is a fair shout, not that there is a huge pool to choose from. Doesn't mean I rate Graham and want to give him a 5 year deal. But I think the comment is a fair one.

Duncan Kellaway played as a defender as well .. it’s why he was such a freak .. yep, the efforts on Carey are stuff of legends .. what made him so good is how much of his career he spent tagging the likes of Buckley and Voss and many others. Superstars.

https://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/129245/the-buckley-question-just-who-will-stop-him

Last week Richmond's Duncan Kellaway tagged Buckley and did a very good job, restricting him to about 20 possessions and the Tigers duly went on to win the match. ""He really is the perfect type of player for Buckley - he is vice captain of the club, very experienced and a fitness fanatic. I think you need a player that is tough both mentally and physically,"" Shaw said. ""Kellaway isn't quite as quick as Buckely but he used his experience to stop Buckley getting the ball in areas where he could set up scoring opportunities.""

Next - Tony Free - spent years tagging

https://www.tigerlandarchive.org/tiki-index.php?page=Tony+Free

He uses the ball well and has the ability to completely shut opponents out of the game by playing close. During recent seasons he has been given numerous tagging roles , because of his mobility and desire .

Chris Bond

https://afltashalloffame.com.au/inductees/162-chris-bond/

Bond was an ever-present member of the Richmond sides of the mid 1990’s from then on. Despite often being utilised as a tagger he still occasionally managed to find plenty of the ball himself

And Hackson as well

Yeah Glove played plenty of footy tagging.

Graham can tag at times but he's not even in the discussion of best ever at the club.

Have to respect the effort here, and if I've learnt anything it's Tony Free was on Blue Heelers.

Happy to agree to disagree, just my opinion, I don't think Free or Bond could have the big scalps Graham has done and my memory of both were more ball winning midfielders than pure shut down tagging. Free played for Vic and I doubt it was for his tagging ability.

Kellaway if we want to classify him as a tagger then sure he's better than Graham but I pick him as a defender.

Kudos to the effort in linking some information, enjoyed reading that and maybe should be 'one of' the best ever taggers we've had instead. Make no mistake am I advocating Graham to sign on, I'd much prefer draft concession.

I was young enough to remember and love the Kellaway brothers.

Too young to remember these supposed efforts on Carey, but the size difference is huge.

Graham is not a good tagger IMO. Simply too slow. Yes he tagged Sloane in the '17 GF but other than that...

I think ability wise he is a great tagger. He is stop slow in 2024 let alone 2025 and beyond to be an impactful tagger.

On the topic of tagging in general. I recall hearing somewhere coaches are anti tagging because if the tagged oppo player still gets 20 possessions you’re basically playing a man down. Although if said player has 15 handballs and 5 kicks under pressure when tagged instead of 15 kicks (like when 2018 PF Sidebottom cut us up) I’d argue that’s a massive win.
