Some Richmond training notes:

* Dustin Martin was the victim of a mild training accident when he split his lip and came from the ground, much to the disappointment of the young fans, many of them there to see the triple Norm Smith Medallist. It has also been reported that Dustin was taken to hospital as a precaution with bruised or suspected broken ribs.

* Josh Gibcus was on the sidelines still recovering from his bad hamstring injury but is expected to be part of Richmond’s transition under new coach Adem Yze.

* Daniel Rioli and Maurice Junior Rioli were among the stars who turned out on the day, with big Toby Nankervis, Ben Miller, Jacob Hopper, Noah Balter, Dion Prestia, Shai Bolton… they were all there.

* Tom Lynch looked to be on light duties as he returns from injury but took part in most drills.

The playing group were put through sessions of game play and group ball-handling sessions, stopping for regular drinks on what was sunny, occasionally cloudy day but with a nice breeze blowing across the ground.

The players regularly stopped for selfies and autographs with fans but it was a fully-fledged training day as part of a weeklong camp at Inverloch, Wonthaggi and Bass Coast.

Tigers in Inverloch: Day 2

By Richmond Media
7 December 2023

Two days down in Inverloch!

The second day of pre-season camp was a jam-packed one for the Tigers. Kicking off with breakfast and morning meetings at the team's home base of RACV Inverloch, it was time to head to Wonthaggi Football Club for the main training session of the week.

A big thank you to Wonthaggi Power for having us. Dion Prestia was especially impressed by the condition of the surface, remarking that the oval was "like carpet"!

The Bass Coast Tiger Army showed up in spades for the open training in the morning sun, where the team was put through their paces in a lengthy session, which included a match simulation drill.

The Tigers enjoyed a delivery of rolls from a local bakery for lunch, and then it was back to the accomodation for pool recovery.

The afternoon was spent down at the beach competing in line groups once again, rotating through three activities.

The first was a stand-up paddle boarding race, which brought much hilarity to the group as they put their balance to the test. Recruit Sam Naismith, who stands at 206cm, was particularly amusing as he struggled with his higher centre of gravity.

The second station was a classic game of beach cricket, bringing out the competitive nature of everyone as they navigated the bounce of the ball on the sand.

The third beach activity was a volleyball tournament, which also got heated quickly, with assistance from coach Adem Yze who had to step in and hold the battered net upright.

It was then time to head back to the accomodation for a culture session followed by dinner, an Italian feast complete with tiramisu, much to the delight of Prestia.

Dustin Martin rejoined the group at dinner time, after being cleared of concussion following a collision at training.

A massive final day of camp awaits on Thursday, stay tuned to find out what the team gets up to!

Tigers in Inverloch: Days 3 and 4

By Richmond Media
8 December 2023

That's a wrap on pre-season camp!

A huge final day awaited the team as buses departed the accomodation early on Thursday morning, not to return until late that afternoon.

The scenic Kilcunda beach was the destination for a gruelling three-hour morning session, which comprised of a 10-kilometre run, a 20-kilometre bike ride to Wonthaggi and back, and a demanding bootcamp session on the sand.

Line groups were up against each other once again for the three-part race, alternating through the challenges. Hard-running Tigers Nathan Broad and Hugo Ralphsmith both impressed during the 10-kilometre effort, which panned across the picturesque Kilcunda Bridge.

The players were then rewarded for their hard work with a Mexican fiesta in the sun, thanks to Lime & Co Cantina.

Once refuelled for the afternoon, the Tigers were off to one last activity for their camp, paintballing at Bass Coast Paintball.

It was then time to celebrate a week of dedication and teamwork at the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club, with dinner on the balcony as the sun set on pre-season camp.

The live band kindly handed over their microphones as the group broke into karaoke, led by Tom Brown on the guitar.

Some of the most notable acts included the new players belting out 'Take Me Home Country Road', and new coaches Adem Yze, Chris Newman and Jack Ziebell trying their hand at 'Blister in the Sun'.

On Friday, the group packed up their belongings, ate their breakfast, and gathered at the pool as the winner of the Tony Mangan Award was announced, as decided by Richmond Coterie members who joined the group the camp, Cliff Gale, Chris Homutowsky and Brett Vorhauer.

Remarking on what was an incredibly tough decision, Tom Brown,  Sam Naismith, Dylan Grimes, Tyler Young and Kaleb Smith were all given special mentions.

But, ultimately, Judson Clarke was chosen as the winner for his positive energy, inclusive nature, and for being the "happiest guy to have ever kicked a football".

After an action-packed week, the group farewelled the Bass Coast, reminiscing on a memorable, fun-filled trip. Back to Punt Road for regular programming!

RICHMOND injury list

Josh Gibcus – The Tigers say the star young defender is tracking nicely after heading to Qatar for specialist treatment on his hamstring in October. He remains on a modified training program until Christmas as Richmond takes a cautious approach, but has begun joining in some drills with the backline group at training.

Tom Lynch – Hopes are that the key forward will do enough over summer to be available for a first round return, but Lynch remains on a modified program after a year ruined by a foot injury. He will step up his training in the new year.

Jack Ross – The midfielder is slowly working his way back into full training, following post-season toe surgery.

Judson Clarke – The small forward is still not taking part in contact training, after suffering a cracked scapula during a VFL game in August. Clarke did not require surgery, but always faced a drawn-out healing process.

Hearing Maurice moved up to middle group & won the running drills at training today...

Coulthard hit Shai lace out with a low bullet pass between 3 defenders.

Hearing we have a huge emphasis on kicking at training, play stops over a missed kick & we start over again #GoTiges

Hope he’s concentrating on a style of play and not trying to perfect lace out football
If we are going to hang our hats on lace out football then I fear the worst

If disposal is a priority of the new regime then half the list should be feeling preety nervous about their futures.... :shh

We still need to redress the post-20 drop off in tackling & pressure though.... :shh :shh

Couple of things that I’ve heard from the Tigers and their training.

- Sam Banks has participated in a lot of the inside midfield drills.
- Kane McAuliffe has been very impressive, especially with his kicking.
- Judson Clarke has made a sensational impression so far

I am pretty sure Yze mentioned this area in one of his initial pressers and so would assume it will be getting some focus
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Would that include our current B&F winner? He was a king of just throwing it on the boot to get the ball out of congestion

And would a couple of our whipping boys be in good place as kicking is their strength?

And agree 100% about our pressure & tackling. Far too much left to too few the last couple of seasons
