Return from the Christmas break

"They're pros, they work really hard. We've still got a new coach (Adem Yze) buzzing around the place that everyone wants to impress. Everyone's come back in great shape."

Current training phase focus

"Obviously football. New coaches, new game plan and all those things, as much football as possible. We're still working on other physical aspects, but footy is definitely the focus. We play Melbourne in four-and-a-half weeks, and we'll be ready to go."

"Richmond Tigers track watch: Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch on light duties as pre-season training

Dustin Martin and Tom Lynch on track – albeit on light duties – was good news for Tigers fans as Richmond continues to ease their veterans through the pre-season.

Richmond star Dustin Martin has rejoined teammates on the training track but remains on light duties after rolling his ankle last week.

The 2017 Brownlow Medal winner had missed a light summer session in Beaconsfield on Tuesday, but was back on deck at Punt Rd on Wednesday morning.

Martin only took part in some basic handball drills with the rehab group, before jogging some laps for a large part of the session.

However, the Tigers expect him to be back in full training in coming days.

Key forward Tom Lynch still remains a little way off joining main training and was again limited to some light drills and jogging as he continues his recovery from a troublesome foot.

Teammate Jack Graham said on Tuesday that while it had “been tough” for Lynch – who did not play after round 4 last year – the spearhead was finally making some progress in his recovery.

Veterans Dion Prestia and Dylan Grimes were also on light duties on Wednesday as they are carefully managed through pre-season, as was captain Toby Nankervis who headed into the gym early as he completes an individual program.

Noah Cumberland and Jacob Bauer were also part of the rehab group, while ruck recruit Sam Naismith completed a mixed program.

BOL LEADING THE WAY

Australian track star Peter Bol was on hand to show Tigers players the way as they did some running at Punt Rd.

Bol was invited to training through a connection with a high performance staff member and will be doing some work with the rehab group going forward.

Bol led the way as the main group completed a lap of the oval to kick things off during their warm up, before going on to run some laps with players including Lynch.

A two-time Olympian for Australia, Bol was also a silver medallist in the 800m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

NO MORE WORRIES

While Lynch’s absence from the main group remains a concern, a trio of other senior players are back in the thick of it after interrupted pre-season campaigns.

Forward Shai Bolton and midfielder Jack Ross trained fully with the main group, while key defender Josh Gibcus also took part in almost all of the session.

Bolton had post-season ankle surgery and was on a restricted program before Christmas, but looked to be moving well as he zigged and zagged past opponents during drills.

Ross also had post-season surgery on his big toe but is quickly building his workloads back up, while Gibcus (hamstring) has been cautiously managed after an injury-ravaged 2023.

STILL PUSHING THEIR CASES

The Tigers are yet to make a decision around their final list spot, with two players continuing to train as part of the supplemental selection period (SSP).

Mitch Schofield and Mykelti Lefau were again on the track on Wednesday as they push their cases to earn a rookie spot ahead of the close of the SSP window on February 19.

Schofield, 22, bagged 30 goals in 19 WAFL games for East Perth last year as a 194cm forward.

Lefau, 25, has been part of Richmond’s VFL program and is a 195cm forward who can also pinch-hit in the ruck."

Some vision of today's match sim here, torch.

Watch here: https://twitter.com/Richmond_FC/status/1750770984863563997

Spy said a fair few regular 22s in rehab didn't play - Lynch (obviously), Dusty (rolled ankle), Prestia, Vlastuin (concussion protocol) and Grimes. Also Bauer, Coulthard and Cumberland.

Balta played up forward alongside Kosi as shown in the vision.
McAuliffe (sneaky for round 1) and Sonsie in the midfield for the centrebounces.

Richmond training notes, Nick Vlastuin injury, Noah Balta forward switch

Josh Barnes
HeraldSun
29 Jan 2024

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin has become the latest player limited by concussion this pre-season, just weeks after recommendations to limit contact at AFL training.

Vlastuin has been in concussion protocols since copping a head knock on Wednesday and was on light duties at training on Monday.

He ran laps and kicked a ball with others in Richmond’s rehab group, including Tom Lynch(foot) and Dylan Grimes (calf).

Victorian coroner John Cain recommended in December that AFL clubs slash contact training sessions in a bid to protect players from concussions, as part of findings into the death of former Richmond midfielder Shane Tuck.

Cain’s recommendation was for clubs to reduce contact in time for the 2025 pre-season.

A number of players across the league have suffered concussions this pre-season, including Collingwood’s Josh Carmichael and Carlton defender Mitch McGovern.

Western Bulldog draftee Aiden O’Driscoll suffered a head clash on Friday and was concussed.

Lynch and Grimes moved well at Richmond training on Monday, with Dustin Martin (ankle) and Dion Prestia (management) stepping away from the main group as it moves into a full-ground stoppage drill.

Spearhead Lynch took part in some light tackling and kicked the ball to Grimes with ease.

Winger Jack Ross trained fully and looked in good nick after toe surgery limited him to start pre-season, while Josh Gibcus took part in the entire session.

Electric midfielder Shai Bolton came up limping after one contest but saw out the session.

A full-speed collision occurred during the session when Noah Cumberland dived to smother a Huge Ralphsmith kick and fell across Ralphsmith’s body, but the pair gingerly got up and carried on.

BALTA SWITCH

New Tigers coach Adem Yze’s interest in playing Noah Balta in attack appeared real on Monday, with the defender playing as a full-forward during the full-ground drill.

Balta opposed defender Tylar Young, while recruit Jacob Koschitzke played alongside, manned by Gibcus.

Both Gibcus and Koschitzke clunked contested marks during the drill, in which one side attacked out of a centre stoppage.

Balta has largely played his 85 AFL games at full-back but he has been swung forward on occasion, including kicking eight goals in his first three games of 2022.

While Lynch is hopeful of being on track to play in opening round against the Gold Coast, Balta may be Yze’s first back-up choice, given Gibcus has rounded into form as a key defender.

SUMMER SIGNING WATCH

Richmond’s train-on players Mykelti Lefau and Mitch Schofield both played as forwards at the opposite end to Balta, with Lefau taking a mark deep forward and setting up a goal.

The Tigers have one spot to fill before the summer signing deadline on February 19.

During a hot Melbourne morning, Richmond continued to train under a giant camel, placed on top of the team bench at Punt Road.

An Yze brainwave, the camel was installed late last week as a metaphor to inspire the Tigers through tough conditions in summer.

DAVID KING'S IMPRESSION OF A NUMBER OF YOUNG TIGERS AT PRE-SEASON TRAINING

SEN
2 Feb 2024

David King is still making his way around AFL club pre-season training, this time stopping by Punt Road.

Richmond would be one of the more fascinating teams in the competition given the ending of the Damien Hardwick era and Adem Yze’s first summer at the helm.

King was impressed with a few developing youngsters in the match simulation training.

“(Thomson) Dow brilliant handball from inside traffic to outside runners, generally #4 (Dustin Martin), who was awesome as per usual,” King tweeted.

“(Rhyann) Mansell should be a consistently (very) good AFL player, showed some brilliance around stoppage and charging (forward) into space. Hit the scoreboard.”

“James Trezise, something there at half back - started well in the main team.

“(Shai) Bolton, looked uninterested, but flexed for 10 minute patch of brilliance.

“(Steely) Green, I’m a fan. Could be in the (Liam) Baker mould.

“(Jacob) Hopper huge 2nd half - big year coming.

“(Josh Gibcus was) solid - kicking needs to flatten out a little bit.

“(Kane McAuliffe) Apparently BOG last week - looks good - love the left foot!”

King was a little more cautious on a trade period recruit: “(Jacob) Koschitzke … not sure. Can’t be dropping lace outers...”

On their game-plan:

“Appeared to be longer kicking, much less handball than other teams. Are they good enough by foot to play that way?” King added.

“All in all, as expected. Top line talent in good order, despite a few very good ones on the sidelines.”

King’s thoughts on the Tigers drew a cheeky reply from Kane Cornes:

“Bottom 4?” Cornes asked.

“I’ve missed you,” King replied.
