I reckon if we could get Ried from Sydney as a FA to play forward, we could afford to trade our two first round picks for Lever to play back.
Surely if Lever wants to go home, 2 first rounders would be attractive to Adelaide.

So basically we get in Reid and Lever for roughly picks 16 and 18

Thoughts??

If we got Lever or McStay we could  play Astbury forward, McStay can also play both ends - then get Richards for nix who's another swingman ...though none of that wouldn't really solve the second ruck problem like Trengove or Reid would...

Another I'd look at who I dont think has been mentioned here yet is Close from Brisbane.

I would trade in Cotchin. Upgrade all the squibs.

Try and get Kelly. Make Rance captain.

We're still short at least one quality mid.  I rather throw everything at Kelly before hacks like Casboult, Tippet or Reid.  Xavier Richards will cost nothing as will Tom Goodwin and someone like Close from Brisbane. Maybe snag Tom McCartin in the draft.(Reece McKenzie without the issues) Another pre-season into Chol, Moore & Garthwaite. Laughin'.....    :shh

I would trade in Cotchin.

Because you're a fool?

Only mid who was busting his gut for the entirity of the last quarter...

I like this approach, but I think we leave Astbury in defence. He seems to have found his niche there. We need to find another tall KPF and a tall forward who can swing into the ruck as required. We don't need superstars, just players  who can provide the contest and improve our team structure.

I certainly can't see these guys on our list at the moment, but I hope Chol and Moore prove me wrong. I think Garthwaite will be a good player for us, but only as a defender.

We desperately need a 2nd Key Forward who can preferably pinch hit in the ruck
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

The tall forwards Richmond should chase to help Jack Riewoldt and mosquito fleet

June 20, 2017
Sarah Olle
FOX SPORTS

WHILE Richmond’s mosquito fleet was the talk of the town at the beginning of the season, a string of close losses has brought not just the Tigers’ mindset, but structure, into question.

With Ben Griffiths suffering a plethora of concussions and Todd Elton dropped back to the VFL after kicking just one goal from six games, it’s clear more than ever that Jack Riewoldt needs some vertical assistance in the forward line.

On Saturday against the Swans, Riewoldt was the tallest of the starting Tiger forwards at 195cm.

Alongside him was Daniel Rioli (179cm), Dan Butler (182cm), Kane Lambert (178cm), Sam Lloyd (180cm) and Josh Caddy (186cm).

Shai Bolton (175cm) and Jason Castagna (181cm) also rotated through the forward line, while Dustin Martin (187cm) pinch hit as a medium-sized option.

At the other end of the field, Sam Reid (196cm) and Lance Franklin (199cm) played at full forward and centre half forward, while youngsters Will Hayward (185cm) and George Hewett (187cm) performed medium tall roles, with Tom Papley (177cm) and Kieren Jack (177cm) nipping at their heels.

There was more balance in the Swans’ forward line — at least from a height perspective.

And while Richmond’s mental frailty has been blamed for the capitulation, Essendon legend Tim Watson suggested the nine-point loss was more a reflection of the Tigers’ structure.

“You need more than one marking target — you’re never going to get the job done with just one bloke like Jack Riewoldt and five smalls,” Watson said on SEN.

“Structurally and fundamentally they didn’t have the right make-up in that team.

“I really believe that they’ll go away from that game and say as good as our small forwards are, as quick as they are, as much pressure as they apply, when they get tired and we need to kick the ball long down the line and we’ve only go Jack Riewoldt there.

“The opposition know you’ve only got Jack Riewoldt there — that is not going to get the job done at the business end of the season.”

THE MISSING LINK

While Tyrone Vickery has hardly set the world on fire at Hawthorn, it’s clear Richmond is missing a player of his mould.

There are grave doubts for Griffiths’ playing future, after the 200cm forward was ruled out of football indefinitely after receiving a concussion in his return VFL match in April.

Ivan Soldo was also trialled down forward once Toby Nankervis returned from suspension in Round 9 against GWS, but only registered five disposals.

Meanwhile, Elton has only managed 10 games since being drafted at the end of 2011 and is out of contract at the end of this season.

At 198cm, Mabior Chol looms as the only realistic option to fill the void.

But Richmond coach Damien Hardwick flagged he was hesitant to blood the 20-year-old.

“We’ve probably got one inexperienced tall at the moment, Mabior Chol, who is on our rookie list,” Hardwick said on Fox Footy’s On The Couch.

“All of the other guys are unfortunately injured at this stage. It’s whether we throw the young fella in there and see if he can rise or we just got with the 22nd best player on our list at the moment and that’s probably the option we’ve chosen at this stage.

“It probably did cost us a bit on the weekend. We were looking to go down the line and we didn’t have that beacon up there.

“I think going forward longer term we certainly need to look at that position.”

TALL FORWARD TARGETS

Josh Schache may have been locked away at Brisbane until the end of 2019, but there are a number of options Richmond could look at to help boost its tall forward stocks.

Sydney’s Sam Reid will become a restricted free agent at the end of the year and at only 25 would fit the Tigers’ age profile.

Another Swan in Kurt Tippett has also been suggested as a potential trade target for Richmond, with Kane Cornes saying a deal could benefit both clubs.

Tippett is contracted until the end of 2018 and Sydney has stated he’s a required player, but if the 30-year-old finishes the season in the NEAFL a departure wouldn’t be beyond reach.

Meanwhile, it’s understood Levi Casboult will test the market at the end of the year, when the Carlton forward will become a restricted free agent.

Melbourne champion Garry Lyon told SEN Casboult could be a perfect fit at Richmond.

“I think (Richmond) might have to go searching because Ben Griffiths — I hope he comes back — but I’m concerned about the concussion stuff with him” Lyon said.

“If he doesn’t get himself up, they might have to go looking. There’s a little something that Levi Casboult could be in the frame.

“All good sides have two big keys.”

POTENTIAL TIGER TARGETS?

— Levi Casboult (Carlton)

— Sam Reid (Sydney)

— Kurt Tippett (Sydney)

— Devon Smith (GWS Giants)

— Mitch McGovern (Adelaide)

— Jack Gunston (Hawthorn)

Huh?

Aren't you the guy who wants to lift standards?

Cotchin deserves credit for all the hard work he has put into his game - as a player and a leader - in the off season.
If more followed his lead, we'd be unbeatable.

Levi Casboult delays contract talks
Herald-Sun
22 June 2017

CARLTON spearhead Levi Casboult will delay making a decision on his future as he surges towards a career-best goal haul this season.

After signing a one-year deal on only modest money last season, Casboult’s value has increased this year after resuming his partnership with specialist goalkicking coach Saverio Rocca.

The unrestricted free agent has slotted 18 goals at 55 per cent accuracy, a sharp rise of almost 16 per cent on last year.

The Blues have indicated a strong desire to re-sign Casboult to thwart any poaching raids from rival clubs, including Richmond, but will have to wait until the end of the season.

Casboult’s manager Anthony McConville from Mac’s Sports said his client was relishing his football at Ikon Park this season, but was in no hurry to consider his future.

“He’s clearly having the best year of his career and enjoying playing an important role in a young playing group,” McConville told the Herald Sun.

“He’s really not concerned about his future at this point, because he wants his footy to speak for itself.

“Like every other year Levi has been out of contract, we will look to sort all of that out upon the completion of the season.”

While Casboult has said he is happy at Carlton, the move is certain to attract the attention of rival clubs, with Richmond in the market for another key forward.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the lack of a second strong-bodied key forward prong hurt the Tigers in their narrow loss to Sydney Swans on Saturday.

“It probably did cost us a little bit on the weekend. I thought we were looking to go down the line and we didn’t have the beacon up there,” Hardwick said on Fox Footy.

“Longer term we certainly need to look at that position.”

The Tigers are in a strong position to find a co-pilot for Jack Riewoldt inside 50m in this year’s trade period with two first-round draft picks and salary cap room in their arsenal.

Back-up key forward Ben Griffiths remains sidelined with a concussion problem. It is unclear when he will return.

Casboult, 27, is one of the few remaining established key forwards out of contract this year along with restricted free agents Sam Reid (Sydney Swans) and Jackson Trengove (Port Adelaide).

The difference is that Casboult is an unrestricted free agent because he is not in the top-25 per cent paid players at Carlton.

It means the Blues would be unable to match any bid for the 201cm powerhouse if he decided to accept a higher offer from a rival club in October.

Casboult is widely considered one of the strongest contested marking forwards in the game despite being repeatedly outnumbered in the Carlton forward line this season.

The 84-gamer is on track to easily eclipse his career-best haul of 24 goals in a season (in 2015) with 10 regular season games remaining this season.

Casboult provided a key physical presence in attack in the upset win against Gold Coast on Saturday night, reeling in eight marks and 13 possessions.

His goal kicking radar was off, however, booting three behinds.

I'd have thought Trengove would be a better option by the length of the Flemington straight...

I'm actually in favor of Levi.

Great hands, physical and coming into his prime.

Set shots still an issue I know, but we're not going to get a perfect CHF in free agency so we need to compromise.

I wouldn't deny him as we are so desperate to fill that position, I just hope we exhaust other options first or getting him means spending bigger somewhere else. Saying he is putrid in front of goal is an understatement and we're not exactly that great in that area as it is.
