Lever should be our priority. Him & Richards would do me. Not sold on going after any of FA KPF's this year...reckon we could trade for Close from Brisbane or Apeness from Freo without having to give up too much, Lever & Richards would allow us to send Astbury forward (and Richards can play both ends as well)....I know we need a KPF who can ruck but it looks like we'll still have Griffiths for better or worse now though I'd rather back in Moore to step up.....we also have Chol (who could be anything or nothing) & Garthwaite....in the draft I reckon McCartin's brother could possibly be a McKenzie-like steal but minus the mental issues, someone like Goodwin from the VFL would be an upgrade on Hamspud & Soldo at this stage.... don't forget also that Lynch from GC is a free agent next year too..... :shh

Still reckon we need to shake the GWS tree for another quality young mid..... Whitfield(unlikely) Hopper or Kennedy, which would be easier if they re-sign Kelly...(we keep getting linked to Devon Smith who's a gun but hardly a need)....just hope they've forgiven us over Deledio.... :shh

Why wouldn't you want a player that is clearly in a sides best 10 players, and not have to give up anything for in Casboult? Everyone else we would need to trade for. FA is a free hit and Casboult would walk into our side where as most of the fringe players being mentioned may not even be better than what we have already got.
Casboult isn't a great kick but this year has shown he can improve that. And his marking is as good as anyone else in the AFL. For me it's a no brainer.
Get rid of Griffiths, Batchelor and Maric and his wage is covered and we haven't lost anything that had even been used this year.

Don't worry the team that brought us the Yarran trade and the Prestia trade will outdo themselves again this year.

Their motto this season 'eventually we will get lucky'

Rubbish. The motto is "the sun will even shine on a black dog's arse once in a while"
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

I agree with this line of thinking. Whether it is Casboult or a similar player, first and foremost we need instant impact from whoever we recruit as a second KPF. While I think we should be looking at younger guys in other teams, we need someone who can come in and play now. That doesn't mean we don't look to recruit a promising KPF if one is available.

But due to the age of our key players (Dusty excluded) we don't really have that luxury to recruit a kid who will return a dividend in say 2-3 years time. We are over reliant on the ability of 3 of our top 4 players (Rance, Cotchin and Riewoldt) and they are in their absolute prime age. In two years time, they will be 29, 29 and 30 years old respectively.

We have to roll the dice, but I think the big concern is that we have done this type of recruiting before and it hasn't gone well. Kent Kingsley and Paul Hudson anyone? We have clearly made the mistake previously of over-rating our list.  But what is worse, over-rating your list or under-rating your list when you are a real chance to finish top 4?

The issue with Casboult is that as a free agent he will likely cost a bit of a premium. I think we will pay more than he is worth, and not sure how that will sit with the need to sign Dusty and our salary cap. The other issue is that there isn't much out there.

FWIW, I think Casboult is our best bet.

Sorry, forgot to add that Close from Brisbane being mentioned on other threads on here looks a likely type as well.

Couple of small bits out of today's West Australian.

1. Harley Balic is looking to be traded back to Victoria. Apparently the Dockers have told him he is free to look for a new club.

2. Eric MacKenzie and Jonathan Giles are likely to be looking for new homes next season as well.

Can't see us being interested in Balic unless we think he can play midfield. Wonder if we might look at MacKenzie as a possible means of freeing up Astbury to go forward. Personally would rather see Astbury stay back, but ......

Would we look at Giles for a little ready made ruck depth?

No chance. If Dusty leaves we will match the offer and force a trade. What or who do North have that could facilitate a trade should he leave for that rabble? Still believe he stays ;)

What do they have? Pick 3 or 4 for starters. Plus Ben Brown. And then pick 21 or 22.

Would need to be a lot better than that for the best player in the land.
