We were part of the 11-club super trade today.

Adelaide and Richmond also reached a resolution over McKinnon's move to Punt Road, with the two clubs previously being unable to find a middle ground in negotiations during protracted talks.

Montana McKinnon joins Richmond

By Richmond Media
14 December 2023

Richmond is delighted to have secured emerging ruck Montana McKinnon following a trade with multiple clubs today.

In summary, following a remarkable 11-club trade, Richmond received McKinnon and selection No. 13 at next Monday night’s AFLW Draft and parted ways with pick No. 11 and No. 29.

McKinnon arrives at the Swinburne Centre following 31 games for the Crows since being selected as the first South Australian pick in the 2019 AFLW Draft.

The 22-year-old, who won two premierships at SANFLW level before being drafted, has been a member of the successful Crows AFLW team over the past four years.

McKinnon averaged 7.7 disposals and 15.7 hitouts per game in 2023, impressing with her athleticism, strong aerial ability, work rate and ability to cover the ground.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan, said McKinnon was a big coup for the Club.

“Montana was a highly sought-after player this off-season, such is her talent and the demand for dynamic talls,” Sheahan said.

“As a young player, she has done very well to contribute to a quality line-up at Adelaide, and she is ready to take her game to a new level in the coming seasons.

“Montana will add another dimension to our side and give us great versatility as to how we use our tall options. We are excited to have her joining us at Richmond and can’t wait to see her in the yellow and black.”

Sheahan added that McKinnon will benefit from having been a part of a great football program at Adelaide.

“Montana comes to us from a very successful club that has been the benchmark in the AFLW competition. She will bring winning habits to Richmond.”

McKinnon’s arrival will see her form a formidable combination of ruck options for the AFLW Tigers alongside Gabby Seymour and Poppy Kelly.

Richmond 2024 AFLW List Changes

Richmond Football Club advises that AFLW players Sarah D’Arcy, Meg Macdonald and Lilly Pearce will not be offered contracts for the 2024 season.

D’Arcy, 32, played 23 games for Richmond across four seasons after being recruited to the Club from Collingwood ahead of the 2021 AFLW season.

The inaugural AFLW player also featured 24 times for the Magpies, taking her career total to 47. The key forward/back has booted 13 goals.

Macdonald played 23 games for the Tigers across three seasons since joining the Club as a replacement player in the lead-up to the 2022 AFLW season.

The inside midfielder played 10 games during the successful Season 7, including both finals appearances, making meaningful contributions through the middle of the ground.

Pearce joined the Club from Queensland in the pre-season but could not break through for her AFLW debut.

The 20-year-old had previously been a train-on player at recent premiers Brisbane.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan, thanked all three players for their hard work during their time at the Club.

“We wish Sarah, Meg, and Lilly all the best for their future pursuits on and off the field,” she said.

“Sarah came to us from Collingwood and added a lot to our program with her experience- she had some injury troubles in recent years but played some very good football for us across her four seasons.

“Meg has been an extremely popular member of our program and has given her all over the past three years.

“Lilly moved to Victoria in July and put her best foot forward while at the Club. She is still very young in her football career, and we wish her well for the journey ahead.”

Richmond holds picks 13, 43 and 49 at next Monday’s 2023 AFLW Draft.

I am not surprised about Sarah D'Aracy. I actually thought she'd retire after a very tough run with injury and having lost her pace

Meg Macdonald is a surprise, best tagger we have and tough at and in the contest. In a word perplexing

Lilly Pearce; don't know anything about her  :-\

Sarah Black's AFLW Draft late mail: Top 20, who goes where?

Sarah Black
womens.afl
17 December 2023

Georgia Clark
Position: Forward
Height: 173cm
State: Tasmania, Tasmania Devils/Glenorchy
Nomination: National

A strong-bodied key forward, who at 173cm would play as a second or third tall at AFLW level. Clark's strengths lie in her marking, leading patterns inside 50 and general footy smarts. Opted to nominate for the national pool rather than North Melbourne's Tasmania alliance.

Where could she go?

St Kilda at pick No.10 could be an option here for Clark, but she has generated significant interest in the last few weeks to rise on the draft boards. West Coast at pick No.14 wouldn't say no to another marking target, with Richmond at 13 possibly less likely.

Ella Slocombe
Position: Midfielder/forward
Height: 165cm
State: Western Australia, Claremont
Nomination: National

Slocombe has improved out of sight over the past 12 months, quickly rising through the West Australian ranks on the back of sheer hard work and impressing the state managers with her attitude. She's quick and agile with plenty of running power and loves a run-down tackle.

Where could she go?

This is where the draft picture becomes a little murky. While Slocombe sits just below the very top tier of this particular pool, she could conceivably slot in anywhere from picks 7-14, with the Eagles unlikely to let her slide any further if still available.

Shelby Knoll to be placed as inactive for 2024

Richmond confirms that young key forward Shelby Knoll will be placed on the inactive list for the 2024 AFLW season.

Knoll, 23, suffered an ACL injury in October at training, cutting short her debut season at the Club after promising performances at scrimmage level.

“Shelby will remain a part of our program in 2024, but by being placed as inactive, will be able to take a conservative approach to her return to playing,” Richmond Head of Women's Football, Kate Sheahan said.

“Another year in a professional environment will do her well, and we look forward to seeing her back at the Club next year.”

Our first pick.

13. Richmond - Isabel Bacon

18 y.o.
172cm
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
Inside midfielder/rebounding defender

AFLW Tigers add Bacon

Richmond has selected pacy midfielder/defender Isabel Bacon with its first selection, No. 13 overall, at tonight’s AFLW Draft.

Bacon is an inside midfielder who also excelled playing as a rebounding defender for Sandringham Dragons and Victoria Metro this season.

The 18-year-old grew up around sports, playing basketball and netball and competing in cross-country running throughout her formative years, including living with her family in Vancouver.

Bacon began focussing purely on football just last year but was quick to stand out to Richmond recruiters with her elite athleticism, explosive speed, endurance, sidestep, power, and strength.

An elite competitor with aggression and physicality in her game, Bacon was also one of the standouts at the National Combine, recording a 3.16 second 20m sprint and 7.55 minute two-kilometre time trial.

The 172cm utility ended the season in dominant form, adding an offensive edge to her impressive defensive numbers.

Bacon averaged 7.8 tackles and 14 disposals per game at Coates League level in 2023, including 41 touches and 23 tackles across the final two matches.

The Sandringham Dragons product was also awarded the Coaches Award for Victoria Metro at the Under 18 National Championships.

Richmond AFLW National Recruiting Manager Trent Mosbey said that Bacon had great versatility to play multiple roles across the ground.

“We love Isabel’s combination of attacking and defensive game style,” he said.

“Isabel can play on multiple-sized opponents and in multiple roles across the ground. Her ability to drive her legs and to power out of congestion was a real eye-catching feature of her game.

“She displays a fierce attack and high level of intensity at the ball and opposition, is an elite tackler and pressure player, and is highly regarded for regularly winning the ball back for her side and then attacking the game once in possession.”

Mosbey added that he could see Bacon helping the Tigers across half-back and progressing into the midfield in the future.

“Isabel has displayed Richmond character traits and is highly regarded for her leadership, professionalism, coachability, and a strong desire to achieve,” he added.

“She has demonstrated that she is a consistent performer week to week and performed well under pressure against the best players from around the country when playing for Victoria Metro.

“We are delighted to have her at the Tigers.”
