43. Richmond - Mackenzie Ford

27-04-2005
163cm
Dover (Hobart)/Tasmania/Allies
Forward/mid

From Kingborough Tiger to Richmond Tiger. Welcome, Mackenzie!

Mackenzie Ford to call Richmond home

Richmond has completed its list for the 2024 AFLW season with the addition of Tasmanian Mackenzie Ford via selection No. 43 overall at tonight's AFLW Draft.

The Tigers pounced on Ford following an excellent season at Coates League, State and Local levels in 2023.

Ford is a dangerous player with explosive pace who can quickly move from congestion and is powerful and strong in a contest.

The 163cm Tasmanian played through the midfield for the Devils in the Coates Talent League, averaging 13.6 disposals, 6.5 tackles, and 3.1 tackles per match.

Ford also impressed when representing the Allies at the National Championships where she was excellent in both her games.

The youngster had 17 disposals, two score assists and six tackles against Victoria Metro, and a monster 15-tackle match against Western Australia, suggesting to recruiters she had the potential to be an elite pressure forward in the AFLW.

Richmond AFLW National Recruiting Manager Trent Mosbey said Ford was easily recognisable on the field with her tenacious hunt for the ball and opposition. She also plays in a blue helmet.

“Mackenzie applies elite pressure around the ball, has excellent competitiveness and ferociousness, and regularly lays tackles,” he added.

“We see Mackenzie as a quick, dynamic, dangerous forward that can have spells through the midfield.

“She is a lively player, and she plays a fast and quick tempo game style which will suit how we play. She has significant upside in her game, and we are excited to see what she can do wearing the yellow and black.”

Ford hails from Dover, a small town outside of Hobart; she was also a state-level netballer in juniors.

Playing for her local club, Kingsborough Tigers, Ford was named their best player in every game she played this year.

The 18-year-old bases her game off Western Bulldogs superstar Ellie Blackburn.

Isabel Bacon

Height: 172cm
D.O.B: 11-04-2005
#16
SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS
MIDFIELDER

SNAPSHOT:

Isabel Bacon is one of this year’s AFLW Draft bolters coming off a memorable debut season with Sandringham Dragons at Talent League level. Boasting explosive speed and high-level endurance as well, Bacon has the flexibility to fill out a number of roles. While some of the fundamentals of the game are areas of improvement, her overall profile is one that will excite clubs.

STRENGTHS:

+ Explosive speed
+ Endurance
+ Versatility
+ Defensive pressure
+ Physicality
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking
- Decision making

PROFILE:

Bacon comes from an athletic background, where she played a variety of sports including basketball and netball alongside her athletics and cross country. In her top-age year, she set her sights on reaching the elite level of Australian rules football, and by the end of the Talent League Girls program, hit her straps with her best form of the season.

The Dragons utility played both half-back and through the middle, as well as off a wing. Though not the highest accumulator of the ball, Bacon's explosive speed coupled with her physicality and aggression at the contest make her such a concern for the opposition. When she tackles, she tackles with intent, and laid a whopping 7.5 per game across her 11 matches for the Dragons.

A real ground level player who had more aerial presence when stepping into the 'Big V', her work at half-back for Vic Metro really caught the eye. She ran off and provided some drive from defence, and set up scoring chains in the process. With a high-level endurance base to go with her speed and all-round athleticism, Bacon can continually impact games with her repeat contest work.

Bacon models her game on explosive midfielders such as Monique Conti and Jasmine Fleming, while the Sydney Swans supporter also looks up to ex-Dragon Sophia Hurley. Athletically, Bacon is able to compete and excel against the best of players, posting a blistering 3.16 seconds in the 20m sprint, and 7:55 in the 2km time trial, showing off that speed-endurance mix.

In terms of her improvements, Bacon has identified her kicking and decision making as ways to further improve. That was evident throughout the season as she would have that almost complete offensive and defensive game aside from the final execution. Those areas of improvement will not worry clubs too much knowing she has come from a different sporting background, and her strengths are harder to teach.

Going forward, Bacon has clear deficiencies to work on in her game, and given her progression in 2023, along with her evident upside, the Dragons midfielder/defender could add extra strings to her bow at the elite level. That speed-endurance mix is a point of difference, and with her natural aggression and ability to play both offensive and defensive roles, she is an all-round threat that just needs to tidy up the final execution.

SUMMARY:

Isabel Bacon has one of the better athletic profiles going around with her mix of speed and endurance, and clubs will likely consider her among the top 30 or so candidates. She got better as the season went on, and developed from an athletic, raw player, to one who was consistently impacting contests with her explosive speed and defensive pressure. It would not be a shock to see a club take a chance on her closer to the top 20.

Mackenzie Ford

Height: 164cm
D.O.B: 27-04-2005
#33
ALLIES GIRLS
MIDFIELDER, WING

SNAPSHOT:

Tasmanian Mackenzie Ford has been one of the most reliable and consistent players throughout the course of the Talent League Girls season. Though not a massive ball-winner, Ford is able to impact both offensively and defensively, run hard both ways and explode from the contest to get the ball forward.

STRENGTHS:

+ Defensive pressure
+ Explosiveness
+ Versatility
+ Clean skills
+ Work rate
+ Balance

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Endurance
- Accumulation

DRAFT PROFILE:

Ford is a player who is consistent across the board, particularly from a midfield perspective. Having moved through multiple teams on the Apple Isle to eventually play with Kingborough Tigers, then the Tasmania Devils and eventually Allies, she has adapted well to each level she goes up.

She has played both on the inside and outside, utilising both her speed and work rate to cover the ground and impact the contest. From an athletic aspect, Ford is known for her explosive speed, and she can evade would-be tackles with that speed. Naturally given her defensive prowess, she has run-down plenty of opponents maximising that same speed she has with ball-in-hand.

From a disposal perspective, Ford is clean by hand or foot, and while there are more potent users, she is able to still hit targets and set up her teammates after extracting it from the inside, or winning it in space. Where she might play at AFLW level is dependent on the club that drafts her, but considering her self-proclaimed improvement of endurance is one area to still develop, she has scope in both regards.

As it stands, she has her bursts between the arcs, and though she is limited in terms of her accumulation, she is a high-impact player. In the Talent League season, Ford registered just one game with more than 20 disposals, and boasted an average of 13.6 disposals per game this season. Those numbers will rise with an improvement in her endurance, as would her scoreboard impact.

Similarly, Ford only kicked the one goal in season 2023 for the Devils, with her defensive mindset the key. She is elite from a tackling perspective, and impacts with ball-in-hand offensively, but is usually setting up her teammates. Adding that element to her game is another way for her to further develop a game that has a lot of positives in it.

Ford's standout trait is easily her tackling, averaging 6.5 per game for the Devils, and a whopping 10.5 across her two matches for the Allies. Her best work is done when looking to lock the ball in or hunt the opposition, and with her athletic gifts, she is a worry for any opponent who wins the ball around the stoppages.

All up, when assessing Ford as a draft prospect, she is solid across the board without a major weakness that will hold her back. Once she is able to make those slight tweaks to her game, she will be able to balance out her profile even more, but they are areas that will come with time.

SUMMARY:

Mackenzie Ford will naturally have to move interstate given she hails from the Apple Isle, and has earmarked the Gold Coast as a potential destination. With family ties up there, Ford could join former Devil Ella Maurer at the club, but expect her to attract some interest across the east coast in particular given her season and room for growth, with her range landing in the middle of the draft.

AFLW Tigers locked in for 2024

Richmond has locked away its playing list for the 2024 AFLW season, with 26 players retained from this year.

Headlining the 26 players set to return to the Club is league best and fairest winner, Monique Conti.

Conti has won an incredible five straight Richmond best and fairest awards and was crowned the AFLW's league best in the eyes of the umpires for the first time, having last year also won the player-voted MVP.

The 24-year-old will return for a sixth season in the yellow and black, as will fellow inaugural AFLW Tigers Katie Brennan, Rebecca Miller, Kate Dempsey, and Gabby Seymour.

Fresh off a second consecutive All-Australian honour and finishing runner-up to Conti in Richmond's AFLW best and fairest, dashing defender Eilish Sheerin has re-signed with the Club.

Consistent midfielder Grace Egan will return to the Swinburne Centre for a third season, while Sarah Hosking has committed to the Club for her fifth campaign.

Young West Australian Charli Wicksteed has also re-signed with the Tigers after an impressive debut season that saw her recognised as the team's best first-year player.

Maddie Shevlin and Poppy Kelly are among the others to have inked fresh deals to remain with the Club, as is Tessa Lavey, who will return from injury in 2024.

Lavey, 30, missed the entire 2023 season with a toe injury but will be back to resume the impressive start she had made to her football career across 25 matches.

Gun youngster Ellie McKenzie will also return from injury in 2024 wearing yellow and black.

Richmond Head of Women's Football, Kate Sheahan, said it was a positive reflection on the program that they could retain the playing list.

"To be able to retain 26 players from last season while bringing in some targets via trade and through the draft is encouraging for us," Sheahan said.

"The group is hungry for more, and the players want to do it together. Their commitment to each other and the Club is a reflection of the foundation they have established for themselves and the program.

“We look forward to seeing what they can achieve in 2024.”

Thank you, Lauren Tesoriero

Richmond AFLW backs coach Lauren Tesoriero will depart the Club, ending a five-year tenure with the Tigers’ women’s program.

The 37-year-old cited work reasons for her departure due to the growing demands of the AFLW competition and the challenges it poses with full-time work.

Tesoriero is completing a plumbing apprenticeship with A.G. Coombs.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan, thanked Tesoriero for her “enormous contribution.

“Lauren has been a mainstay within our football program essentially since the very beginning,” Sheahan said.

“Her outstanding knowledge of football and, particularly, female athletes, has been invaluable for our program, and we are lucky to have had her with us across many roles since 2018.

“We will miss ‘Loz,’ but also understand the balancing act of work and part-time coaching, which she has also managed alongside a coaching role with Mt Evelyn’s Senior Men’s team in the winter months.

“She has had a significant impact on and off the field as a foundation member of our AFLW program, and we certainly hope to see her coaching at the elite level again one day.”

Ins: Ally Dallaway, Jodie Hicks (Greater Western Sydney), Montana McKinnon (Adelaide), Isabel Bacon, Mackenzie Ford (draft), Tessa Lavey (inactive, toe)

Outs: Meagan Kiely (retired), Jess Hosking (delisted, then West Coast), Sarah D'Arcy, Meg Macdonald, Lilly Pearce, Steph Williams (delisted)

2024 list: Isabel Bacon, Katie Brennan, Monique Conti, Katelyn Cox, Ally Dallaway, Kate Dempsey, Molly Eastman, Grace Egan, Mackenzie Ford, Libby Graham, Caitlin Greiser, Jodie Hicks, Sarah Hosking, Courtney Jones, Poppy Kelly, Shelby Knoll*, Tessa Lavey, Beth Lynch, Laura McClelland, Ellie McKenzie, Montana McKinnon, Bec Miller, Amelia Peck, Stella Reid, Charley Ryan, Gabby Seymour, Eilish Sheerin, Maddie Shevlin, Charli Wicksteed, Jemima Woods, Emelia Yassir
*inactive

It'll be interesting to see how Richmond juggles its talls in 2024, bringing ruck McKinnon into the side. They like the ground-level work of Seymour, so there's a potential for Kelly to be pushed into a permanent forward role. Hicks is a steadier head in defence than Jess Hosking (who arguably has the edge in tackle pressure), while Lavey's work on the wing has almost been forgotten after a year on the sidelines. Bacon and Ford may not be needed straight away, given the older Dallaway has also been added to the midfield mix.

Moments that mattered: What shaped your club's season in 2023

Gemma Bastiani takes a look at the your club's biggest moment in the 2023 season.

Mon wins big

At just 23 years of age, Monique Conti polled more AFLW Best and Fairest votes than any player before to win the highest individual player honour at the W Awards in November. Now with a premiership medallion, a Grand Final best on ground medal, and an AFLW Best and Fairest award, Conti is in rare air, joining just Erin Phillips in winning all three during their career. The scary part is just how much footy is still ahead of Conti.

Best 15 games of the season

By Gemma Bastiani

29 December 2023

11. Richmond v Gold Coast (round six)

Gold Coast 5.6 (36) def. Richmond 5.5 (35) at Ikon Park

Despite being hard-hit by injury, to the point where it needed to play train-on player former-Sun Shannon Danckert, Richmond was performing well at its makeshift home of Ikon Park. Gold Coast snatched the lead in the third quarter before Danckert put the Tigers back in front with four minutes left on the clock. Down to the last minute scores were tied up and the ball landed in the hands of Gold Coast captain Tara Bohanna 50m from goal, who went on to kick the most important behind of her life. Charlie Rowbottom and Claudia Whitfort were immense through the middle for the Suns, combining for 56 disposals and 20 tackles, while Richmond winger Kate Dempsey did everything in her power to get her side the win.

Secret weapons: Your club's most underrated player

Gemma Bastiani takes a look at the under-the-radar players that are crucial to your side's success

Beth Lynch
Lynch's performance against Geelong in round nine alone makes her the clear choice for the Tigers, with her 20 disposals, 16 intercepts, and 284m gained a huge effort to hold off the Cats for as long as Richmond did. Throughout the season Lynch played both on the wing and in defence, averaging 10.2 disposals, 3.7 tackles, and 3.4 inside 50s, and bringing her relentless attitude across both lines.

Caitlin Greiser

Season snapshot: Nine games, eight goals, averaging 8.7 disposals, 1.4 inside 50s, 3.3 score involvements.

The 2023 Goal of the Year winner was super consistent in her first season at the Tigers. Greiser stood up in some big moments, including a massive round one matchwinner over eventual premier Brisbane. As the connection between Richmond's midfield and new forward line improves, Greiser will only get better.

‘Fine, I’ll show you’: This star Tiger has not given up on her Opals dream

Marnie Vinall
The Age
January 18, 2024

Paris 2024 might be too soon, but AFLW superstar Monique Conti says her dream of representing Australia in basketball is still alive as she dominates the WNBL season.

Conti has been told since she was a teenager that she couldn’t combine her two sporting loves – footy and basketball. But the Richmond superstar proved everyone wrong by winning the AFLW best-and-fairest award in December and returning to training for the Melbourne Boomers the next day, as most of her football teammates headed for a well-earned post-season break.

The 23-year-old is now backing up her career-best season for the Tigers with one at the Boomers and going toe-to-toe with Opals opponents – often beating them.
