Richmond season guide: All you need to know

JAN 21. 2021. 6:00 AM
Sarah Black

Club: Richmond

Coach: Ryan Ferguson

2020 captain: Katie Brennan

2020 best and fairest: Monique Conti

2020 in a nutshell: Safe to say it was a tough debut season for Richmond, failing to win a game from its six matches and losing coach Tom Hunter during the off-season. The Tigers showed glimpses at times, with their mid-season match against Geelong a high-scoring highlight, but they just simply didn't win enough of the footy. The season ended on a low, scoring just three points against fellow first-year side St Kilda.

New players:
Sarah D'Arcy, Sarah Dargan (Collingwood), Sarah Hosking (Carlton, pictured below), Harriet Cordner (Melbourne), Ellie McKenzie, Tessa Lavey, Luka Lesosky-Hay (draft), Hannah McLaren (injury replacement)

Notable departures:
Grace Campbell (North Melbourne), Lauren Tesoriero, Laura Bailey, Ella Wood (retirements)

Inactive players: Holly Whitford

2021 opponents: Brisbane (h), West Coast (a), Geelong (h), Western Bulldogs (a), North Melbourne (a), Melbourne (a), Gold Coast (a), Adelaide (h), St Kilda (h)

Circle it: Round one will be the first official AFLW match held at Punt Road Oval, while round four will see former star Dogs Katie Brennan and Monique Conti play their old side for the first time. Round two against fellow struggler West Coast looms as a good opportunity for the Tigers to record their first ever AFLW win.

Player to watch: All eyes will be on No.1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie, who is set to get a lot of game time for the Tigers in 2021. A tall midfielder who can push forward, she has elite disposal and strong hands overhead.

Best Rising Star chance: Ellie McKenzie

2021 prediction: With four steady and experienced recruits over the off-season, the Tigers should be in better shape in their second season. They should get that prized first victory after a winless inaugural season. It probably won't be a rapid rise up the ladder in 2021, but steady improvement should be the aim for the season.

Full AFLW round one preview: Finally, we're back

Sarah Black
JAN 28. 2021. 6:00 AM

IT'S BEEN a long 10 months, but the NAB AFLW competition is back and firing on Thursday night.

Take a look at all the round one action to come.

RICHMOND v BRISBANE
2.10pm AEDT, Sunday, January 31
Swinburne Centre, Richmond, Vic

*Still winless, the Tigers will be desperate to break that duck in their seventh overall AFLW match, their first under new coach Ryan Ferguson. They'll be boosted by recruits Harriet Cordner, Sarah Hosking, D'Arcy and Dargan, and No.1 draftee Ellie McKenzie.

*After a tumultuous few off-seasons, the Lions have been quietly going about their business this pre-season, with a stable list for the first time in a while. They hit the ground running last year, undefeated until round five, and will be hoping for the same strong start in 2021.

Tip: The Tigers will be hungry, but the Lions have plenty of experience and have had fewer personnel changes, important in a short pre-season. Lions by eight points.

A.G. Coombs extends Richmond partnership, joins AFLW front of jumper

By Richmond Media - 5 hrs ago

Richmond is pleased to announce that A.G. Coombs has extended its support of the Club into 2021.

A.G. Coombs is the leading Australian building services company that provides an integrated range of whole-of-life technical services for all systems in buildings.

Through the partnership extension, A.G. Coombs, who has supported the Club since 2016, will continue as the Club’s official partner for facilities maintenance of building services, including air-conditioning, mechanical services, and fire protection.

In an exciting addition to the long-standing partnership, the A.G. Coombs logo will now sit proudly on the front of the Richmond AFLW playing jumper and media polo.

The front of jumper sponsorship adds to A.G. Coombs's existing support of the Richmond AFLW program, where they were an inaugural partner in 2020.

As part of the partnership and the businesses' strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and gender equality, A.G. Coombs and Richmond will also work together to provide employment opportunities for AFLW players.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said he was thrilled that A.G Coombs would be represented on the Club’s iconic Yellow and Black guernsey for the AFLW season.

“Russell and the team at A.G. Coombs have been tremendous supporters of our Club for a considerable period of time,” he said.

“Their continued support for our business operations and community programs has been fantastic, and they have embraced and endorsed our Women’s program since its inception.”

A.G Coombs Group Managing Director, Russell Telford, is excited to be elevating their participation and connection with the clubs Women’s program and the AFLW competition. “We are extremely proud of our multi-faceted partnership including our alignment with diversity and inclusion as well as high value community programs,” he said.

A.G Coombs will continue to support Richmond’s Korin Gamadji Institute in 2021, working to provide education and employment pathway opportunities to KGI REAL program participants.

Are we the only AFLW club that has cancelled their VFLW club?

If so why?  Aren’t we better off than other clubs like north, saints and Footscray.

Maybe we cancelled the VFLW club because we are better than the rest?

Yes we are

This has been covered off before in previous pages

Club has said that the cuts to the footy department soft cap has impacted. Which I've taken to mean Club focused on only cutting AFL spend where it has to out of the mens program and keeping it to an absolute minimum to get under the new limit .

Which going by many on heres disdain for the entire Women's program that is probably a good thing. Heacen forbid of they prioritised the VFLW or the VFL.

Add in that the AFL has said spend on Women's program at all Clubs had to remain at 2020 levels. Richmond has decided to commit all that spend to the ALFW program only

I appreciate the explanation but it still seems rather unconvincing. I suppose it’s not really a big deal because it’s only vflw but it doesn’t explain how ALL other clubs can find a way to do both but we choose not too because it’s too expensive despite being one of the wealthier clubs in the AFL.
Is soft cap spend in the AFL seperate to the AFLW program or is it combined?
How the heck is North able to do both?
Maybe with the money we’ve allegedly saved we can poach the north aflw recruiting guru.  :rollin

If that umpiring call is typical of women's footy it's not worth watching.
