I know we are ordinary but the umps are pulling out some dodgy decisions in this 2nd half. That kick clearly made the distance to Wakefield.

Anyway, we finally get a free in front of the sticks. High on Hosking = goal.

Throw in head high contact for good measure and you get?

Play on, the ball up.  :banghead

Have said this alot but the standard of umpiring in the AFLW is abysmal. No consistency, poor positioning, the list goes on

The poorer teams in particular have no hope if they are not receiving frees for the most obvious decisions

Irrespective of the umpiring we are not good enough. We wont win a game this season. That will be 2 years winless.
How much more does brendon gale have to see before he sacks the 2 ladies ive heard are primarily responsible for getting this list together. The girls try ... but theyre not good enough to compete let alone win games.

A few things stood out for me today.

1. We are much better than last season.

2. We aren’t fit enough compared to other teams.

3. Our skills are below standard compared to other teams.

4. We don’t have enough good players.

Outclassed by a much better side. We just don't have enough AFLW talent to compete for a whole game and once again we struggled to kick goals due to our inefficiency, lack of organisation and failure to hit-up targets. First quarter when everyone is fresh was good but we let ourselves down offensively and defensively with dumb footy in the second quarter and then fell away as we fatigued in the second half and Melbourne stepped it up and exposed the huge gulf between the sides.

Conti, McKenzie (esp. first half), Miller and Cordner in defence, and Brancatisano against Daisy Pearce did well.

We are just going to have to be patient as we turnover our list and hit the draft over the next couple of years. McKenzie shows the best talent coming through the junior ranks is top notch.  She will be a gun in the next few years as she builds up her tank. We sure need a heap more of her and Conti's class.

I forgot to add ball movement to that list.

It’s terrible. I lost count the amount of times our kicks would go to a massive outnumber

There’s still a lot of work to be done but the signs are good.

---------------------------------------------------------------

MELBOURNE has cantered away from Richmond in a well-rounded performance, cruising to a 28-point win at Casey Fields.

The Tigers booted the first goal of the game, but the Demons dominated the scoreboard from that point forward in the 7.2 (44) to 2.4 (16) win.

It was a hot contest in the first quarter, with neither side able to break into a lead, while both demonstrating a free-flowing, attacking style of play.

After being held disposal-less in the opening term last week, Richmond best and fairest Monique Conti relished a looser check, wheeling out of stoppages with seven in the first.

The tall Melbourne forward line, with four players – Tegan Cunningham, Eden Zanker, Alyssa Bannan and Jackie Parry – over 176cm, began to stretch Richmond's defence in the second, as the midfield began to pump the ball in deeper to great effect.

Bannan, in her second game after being taken with pick No.5 in last year's draft, booted two in the space of a few minutes, covering the ground with ease.

Melbourne started to look ominous in the third term, quick to capitalise on its forward-50 entries, while the ball often bounced straight out of Richmond's attacking zone.

Lily Mithen (20 and seven tackles) and Tyla Hanks (19 and five) starred in the middle for Melbourne, and while Karen Paxman was not as prolific as last week, it was still a strong four-quarter performance from the veteran.

Statistically, both sides were quite even in nearly every facet of the game bar clearances and tackles. The spread of disposals saw Conti (27 disposals) dominate for the Tigers – the next best was three with 14 – with a much more even contribution from the Dees.

The Northern Knights effect
The Knights have been a strong under-18 team in the NAB League for the past few years, and two of their star recent graduates showed patches of brilliance for both sides. The No.1 pick in last year's NAB AFLW Draft, Ellie McKenzie (14 touches), was clean and composed playing in the middle for the Tigers. Demons forward Bannan had a nice little cameo in the second, kicking two quick goals in a matter of minutes.

Little by little, the Richmond improvement is there
There's no questioning this is a vastly better Richmond side than that of last year. There were more than a few clean passages of play, and the likes of Sophie Molan, Sabrina Frederick, Bec Miller and Gabby Seymour are improving by the week. Players are looking to open the game up and willing to change lanes (occasionally to their detriment), rather than the continual bombs down the line we saw last year.

Raining goals at Melbourne
Melbourne coach Mick Stinear was public and strong in his desire for his side to score more in 2021, and so far, the early signs are good. In 2020, the Dees averaged 34 points from their six home-and-away matches. By comparison, Melbourne's two games this year have produced scores of 56 and 44, for an average of 50. The test as to whether this can continue will come against stronger opposition, having played two expansion sides in Gold Coast and Richmond.

Say what?

"The way the girls finished the game (was most pleasing). Richmond was really strong around the ball, they beat us in contested possession today, they outworked us in periods, but in the second half the girls were able to have a little more composure with the ball. They were still prepared to work hard offensively towards the end of the game." – Melbourne coach Mick Stinear

"I don't want to give a generic, same message about our competitiveness. I thought they got us in a patch in the second quarter, where we dominated play, inside 50s and time in forward half, and they got through us and scored quickly. In terms of momentum, that was the critical point of the game, I thought. I was really pleased and proud of the last 10 minutes of the last quarter." – Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson

RUTHLESS DEMONS MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF TOOTHLESS TIGERS

The Age
7 February 2021

Melbourne 1.0, 3.1, 5.2, 7.2 (44)
Richmond 1.0, 1.2, 1.3, 2.4 (16)

Goals
Melbourne: Bannan 2, Hore 2, Cunningham, Scott, Paxman
Richmond: Frederick, Hosking.

Best
Melbourne: Mithen, Hore, Paxman, Bannan, Goldrick, Hanks
Richmond: Conti, Brancatisano, Frederick, Hosking

Injuries
Melbourne: Petrevski (hamstring)

---------------------------------------------------------

Melbourne have sent out another warning shot to the rest of the AFLW after clinically disposing of an outclassed Richmond outfit by 28 points at Casey Fields on Saturday.

The Tigers had a crack in the first term, but the gulf in class between the two sides became very clear by the time the final siren sounded, as the Demons piled on seven goals in a row to clinch the 7.2 (44) to 2.4 (16) victory, a week after impressively dismissing the Suns up on the Gold Coast.

After years of near-misses in this competition, Melbourne resemble women on a mission as they look to finally break through for a maiden premiership in 2021.

But the result was soured for the Demons with teenager Krstel Petrevski appearing to suffer a serious hamstring injury in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Richmond remain winless from eight games since entering the AFLW last year, averaging a measly 18 points per game. They’ve kicked three goals in two games so far this season.

The Tigers didn’t struggle getting their hands on the ball, comfortably winning the disposal count 217-198 and contested possessions 119-101, but their lack of efficiency and poor decision-making brought about their undoing.

Melbourne duo Kate Hore and Alyssa Bannan each kicked two goals, and they all came at crucial times during the middle two quarters with the game still in the balance. Usual suspects Lily Mithen and Karen Paxman were also crucial to the win while Sinead Goldrick did a superb blanketing job on Richmond’s Katie Brennan.

Richmond’s Monique Conti finished with a game-high 27 disposals and her teammate Maddy Brancatisano did a brilliant tagging job on Daisy Pearce, restricting the Melbourne champion to just six touches.

Richmond burst out of the blocks and caught Melbourne off guard as the Demons struggled to come to terms with the Tigers’ red-hot pressure early.

But despite enjoying more control of the ball, Richmond still headed to quarter-time level with Melbourne and, predictably, the seasoned Demons made Richmond pay for not opening up a decent lead when they had the chance.

Despite kicking into the breeze, Melbourne booted two goals in as many minutes early in the second term via second-gamer Bannan and their rock-solid backline managed to hold firm despite the resurgent pressure levels from Richmond, who at one stage led the tackles inside 50 by 13 (14-1).

That’s as good as it would get for the Tigers as the Demons dealt with every shot Richmond fired their way in the second half, outscoring them four goals to one, and cruising to a comfortable victory as the visitors’ resistance evaporated.

Eyecatchers: Who was your club's unheralded star in R2?

Richmond

Sophie Molan

Last year was a baptism by fire for Molan, the then 18-year-old thrust into a starting spot in an understrength Richmond midfield. One year later, she looks to be settling nicely into the AFLW, and her run-and-carry and willingness to break lines was particularly noticeable against Melbourne. Recording 11 disposals (one off her career-high, set against Gold Coast) and four tackles, Molan was Richmond's first ever draft pick and should be a long-term player for the club - Sarah Black
