Some better signs and some improvements this week. If we played with the same intensity the whole game we would of got even closer.

I thought the girls were better today. A really improved performance. I liked that they seemed to enjoy their game when they did something good. If theyd played west coast they would have won. Alot of improved players effort and run and i dont want to pick on an individual but sabrina frrderick shouldnt be playing.

COLLINGWOOD'S powerful unbeaten start to the season has continued with a polished 17-point win over a dogged Richmond.

The Tigers' quest for a first win continues despite pushing the Magpies harder than the scoreboard suggested in the 7.6 (48) to 4.7 (31) result at the Swinburne Centre.

The hosts had no answers early for Magpies co-captain Brianna Davey, who seemed to have brought her own clone to the match such was her prominence around the ground.

But as the game wore on, it was the class and hard work of Britt Bonnici (30 disposals, 10 marks) and Jamiee Lambert (25) who did most of the damage around the stoppages, despite Tiger Gabby Seymour's complete domination of the hitouts against Bella Smith and Sophie Alexander.

Collingwood's ball movement was magnificent at times; the players didn't get sucked into the contest, spreading well and allowing for clean disposal chains.

Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson would have been alternatively pleased and pulling his hair out from the second quarter onwards, as the Tigers' pressure and intensity hit an impressive top gear but was wasted with poor kicking and conversion inside 50.

Aishling Sheridan's strong start to the season continued with two goals, while at the other end, Tigers skipper Katie Brennan played her best game for the year, moving further up the ground than previously.

Former Olympic basketballer Tessa Lavey – in her first official game of football – had an impressive debut for the Tigers in defence, taking the game on and showing off a booming boot, while No.1 pick Ellie McKenzie's nous shone up forward.

Gabby Seymour had an unexpected moment of pure joy, with an unusual reaction after a mark inside 50. Thrilled with a rare contested mark win close to goal against powerhouse Magpie defender Stacey Livingstone, Seymour's shock was evident on her face, and she even celebrated with a fist pump. Unfortunately for the former volleyballer, Seymour sprayed her set shot, a common theme for the Tigers throughout the day.

Inaccuracy woes
It was a game of what might have been for Richmond, kicking 4.7 with several more shots either dropping short or spraying wide. Given the margin ended up being 17 points, with the Magpies held scoreless in the last quarter, the Tigers could have been much closer to that elusive first win. In the words of the coach, they just started their run from too far back.

"I thought it was a bit of an arm-wrestle in the first three quarters, where they really took their moments with class, and we shot ourselves in the foot a few times, to be fair – free kicks, a 50m penalty, missing some shots on goal. "It was a bit of a slog for both teams. We knew Richmond were strong in the circle, their contested ball is actually really, really good, so we knew it would be tough. As the game broke open, we started to use the ball quite well. The gap between the AFLW’s top and bottom clubs was again laid bare on Sunday as red-hot Collingwood maintained their unbeaten start to the season and inflicted a ninth straight loss on Richmond.

Playing behind closed doors at Punt Road, the Tigers never seriously threatened to break their competition duck as the Pies’ superior class shone through.

Collingwood had braced for Richmond to challenge the Pies on the inside and to the Tigers’ credit, they scrapped well. But the Magpies were much cleaner with the ball, as Brittany Bonnici, Brianna Davey and Jaimee Lambert led the way in the middle.

Aisling Sheridan provided class up forward, while Chloe Molloy was dangerous again. Ruby Schleicher continued her strong start to the season with another damaging game off half-back.

The Pies showed their blue-collar streak too, impressing with excellent forward pressure, especially early in the piece when the match was still notionally up for grabs.

Collingwood worked their way to a 32-point lead at three-quarter-time but Richmond managed to dodge another shellacking with a spirited final-term showing in which they hemmed the gap.

In promising signs for the Tigers, No. 1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie worked her way into the contest to kick two second-half goals, while Australian basketball representative Tessa Lavey looked far from out of place.

But for a club that has done so much right over the past decade, the fact Richmond are still searching for a maiden AFLW victory a third of the way into their second season in the competition will burn for the powers that be at Punt Road, and raises serious questions about the manner in which the Tigers’ list was built.

“Definitely lots of improvement. Today wasn’t a celebration, wasn’t a win. We got beaten. But it was another step in the right direction and we still take a hell of a lot out of it,” Tigers coach Ryan Ferguson said.

CROSSING THE LINE
The stakes were a fair bit lower, and it came more than 41 years too late, but the Pies look to have benefited from their own Wayne Harmes moment on Sunday. Replays showed the ball was clearly over the boundary line when Lambert curled a ball inside 50. Despite an overcooked handball from Sheridan, second-gamer Joanna Lin did brilliantly to snap truly and ensure Collingwood made the most of their stroke of luck.

EASY, TIGER
Richmond’s Gabby Seymour outbodied Collingwood rock Stacey Livingstone to take a strong grab at full-forward early in the second quarter. The Tiger was pumped, a broad smile emerging on her face. She even gave a fist pump, unusual given she hadn’t yet gone back and kicked the goal. And it turns out she’d gone the early crow, missing a sitter. Teammate Sabrina Frederick would be a culprit later in the quarter as the lowly Tigers continued to blow chances they couldn’t afford to waste.

Not many cross-code athletes have managed to look quite as home in their first game as Tessa Lavey. The Olympic basketballer lined up in defence for the Tigers against Collingwood, having only had one practice VFLW match under her belt since playing footy as a young kid. She read the ball well overhead, showed a willingness and the agility to take the game on, and has a powerful kick to complement her competitiveness. - Sarah Black

Carlton vs Richmond Preview

After finally breaking through for their first win of 2021, Carlton will look to make it back-to-back wins as they face the yet-to-win-a-game Richmond at Ikon Park this Saturday.

It was very much the Maddy Prespakis show at Moorabbin last weekend as the Blues cruised through for a 24 point win over the Saints.

Prespakis put on a show with 24 disposals and a goal, as last years AFLW MVP could very much be favoured to back it up this season.

At the beginning of this season, many had pencilled in Carlton as a contender for the flag so last week was very much a shot in the arm for their prospects.

They are the unbackable favourite against Richmond, although, they should not underestimate the Tigers.

Don’t get me wrong, the Blues will win this.

It’s how they will win this – especially if they want to give the old percentage a bit of a boost.

Out of the four teams yet to win a game, Richmond is clearly the best of the bunch but the Tigers probably wished the league put them against a non-establishment top 8 contender side in the current drip-fed fixture format.

The Tigers were plucky in their 17 point loss to Collingwood but have some serious inaccuracy woes – kicking 4.7 along with a few shots that fell short or went wide. They even held the Magpies scoreless in the last quarter but couldn’t capitalise. Richmond AFLW is still very much a work in progress and that first win is coming, but it won’t be this Saturday.

Preview: Richmond vs Carlton

The Tigers performed strongly against the Pies, but could not convert their domination into points as they fell 17 points in arrears of their rivals, ensuring their losing streak extended to nine.

This was despite the domination of Gabby Seymour in the hitouts against Collingwood’s two-prong ruck pairing of Bella Smith and Sophie Alexander.

A major subplot of the match between the Tigers and Blues will be the Hosking twins, Sarah and Jess, facing each other for the first time since the former left Carlton at the end of last season.

Such is the expectation of a good crowd – if permitted by the Victorian government – that this match has been fixtured for Ikon Park, despite this being a Tigers home game, as was the case for the Round 1 clash between these two sides last year.

After two losses to start the year, the Blues finally got going last Saturday, with reigning best-and-fairest Maddy Prespakis inspiring her side to a 24-point win over St Kilda after dominating proceedings with 24 disposals and a goal.

However, their first quarters continue to be an Achilles heel, being kept scoreless in the opening quarter for the second time in three weeks, while their only other quarter yielded only one goal against the Western Bulldogs in Round 2.

While the Blues will start favourites, starting strongly will be key if they are to keep the Tigers at bay.

Prediction: Carlton by 18 points.
