Going by the three squads, Brisbane are taking this the most seriously and we're the ones taking it the least. No surprise ours is made up of newbies and fringe players. This will just be a chance for some of our boys to get some 'gametime' runs into their legs before the season starts. The main thing is no injuries [touchwood]  :pray.

More from Leppa:

Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch has explained the philosophy behind the selection of the Tigers’ 15-man squad for their AFLX tournament matches at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium this Saturday.

There are just three members of Richmond’s 2017 premiership side in the squad, with a combined total of 261 senior league games among the group.

“We’ve got a (JLT series) game in seven days’ time (v Essendon at Wangaratta) that we’re very conscious about . . . a pre-season trial, which is very important now that you’ve only got two of them. We have to travel to Sydney (for the AFLX tournament) as well. So we’re conscious of all those things,” Leppitsch said.

“But I think everyone that’s going out there is probably playing for a reason . . . the couple of premiership boys, the young ones, that we’re bringing up there for a bit of leadership to try and drive the group.

“There’s some players that weren’t regulars last year, with (Corey) Ellis, (Reece) Conca, (Sam) Lloyd and guys like that, who could really show some early signs . . .

“And, obviously, the blend of youth as well.

“So there’s a few different reasons why you pick the squad that’s going up there for us.”

Leppitsch, who will coach the Tigers in the inaugural AFLX tournament, admitted there was a significant unknown factor attached to the whole concept.

“We had a little scratch match with Hawthorn a couple of weeks ago and that was our first crack at it. And we had another 10 minutes after our training session last Saturday. So we’ve done a little bit . . . enough to sort of understand it,” Leppitsch said.

“If you were preparing for a proper season of AFLX you’d say we’re very under-prepared, but just enough not to break too many rules . . .

“It’s new to everybody, so we’re all kind of guessing on what to do.

“I think the only thing we all know is a super goal, or a Zooper goal (from outside 40 metres), is worth 10 points and a goal’s worth six. So you might see a lot of strategising to try and get as many 10-pointers as you can because there really is a limited time-frame.

“When you’ve only got two 10-minute halves, you’ve really got to try and maximise your scoring.

“So look out for a fair bit of kicking backwards in a few games to try and score as many ‘tens’ as possible.”

Richmond will play Greater Western Sydney at 4.10pm on Saturday followed by Brisbane at 5.06pm.

The winner of the Tigers’ Pool A will then play the winner of Pool B (Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast) in the grand final at 7.03pm that evening.

Watching it tonight, AFLX would be a good game for kids to learn the basic foot and hand skills of footy as well as for light-hearted social games between friends and workmates. However, at the professional level it's bruise free footy. There's no pressure, contests, tackling or even speckies.

Pretty boring to watch.

I assume the AFL has introduced this to try and utilise soccer ovals, thereby taking away from the round ball code.

There's more rectangular fields in non-traditional Aussie Rules states of NSW & Qld, so AFLX allows the AFL to use them. It won't have any impact on Soccer as, due to its participation growth, it also needs more rectangular fields.

The other thing AFLX does is it creates more AFL content for TV = more $$$ for next TV rights.

I didn't mind it. I watched the final. Our young guys should be pretty suited to this format.

It's the Aussie Rules equivalent of Rugby Sevens.....but even crappier......so not really equivalent at all I suppose....

I always thought this was better as a pre-season concept....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_AFL_Lightning_Premiership

.....that was at least on a proper footy ground with 18 players on the field and closer to actual footy...

Think they need to incorporate a Harry Potter style Quidditch small circular target or similar (a vertical basketball net maybe) so that it introduces a more difficult scoring option with bigger reward. The game as it stands removes everything the avid AFL follower enjoys, bone crunching tackles, high marking and the opportunity to celebrate goals. Essentially its like watch two teams running through training drills, no real atmosphere and to be honest have found it a bit of a snorefest so far, others may disagree.

I went last night

Too easy to score and zero atmosphere

They know that, hence the need for a crappy commentator

You're right it does remove everything, which is great as everybody always bunnies (including me) when there is the slightest chance of a player getting injured and possibly missing round one.
I for one want it to stay as it is absolutely important that players get pre season match practice.
Players get injured during training, the JLT series and intraclub matches as well which are all designed to condition players for the up and coming season.

This set up is good for practice and builds up a lot of endurance testing for players who thought they were fit and after playing, know that they have more work to do.

If this game of foot basketball/hand soccer (I hate basketball, so stuffing repetitious and soccer is just, well I'd rather watch snails eat grass) keeps the players safe and provides good match conditioning then bring it on.
The third quarter, the premiership quarter, it's Dusty time. He starts to shine and then delivers in the most AWESOME fashion.

We turn it over again across HB and the pass to Georgie outside 40. His shot holds up and bounces through for a point.

Moore interestingly playing in defence.

Butler hands to Broad across HB. Finds Lloyd 50 out. Hits the post.
