Just 10 AFL listed players today, so Essendon were a more experienced side.  We lost the inside 50 count 44-59 and Essendon beat us convincingly on the outside. We won the game on the inside and with our transitional run on the counter. Also, unlike the seniors, we took our chances in front of the big sticks.

As for blokes pushing for senior selection, there's not much to get excited about. Really only Graham and Garthwaite (1st half) were the bright spots. Miles was good in and under but he's on the outer. Same goes for Batch in defence. Hunt and Townsend both got a fair bit of it but this is their level. Hunt too soft in 50/50 contests and Townsend not skilled enough. Maric is retiring while his cousin Soldo is still way off it outside of ruck tap duties. Chol hasn't come on while Broad was disappointing in 1st half (improved in 2nd half). There were a couple of times in the first half (one stood out on a HBF and was mentioned by the Ch 7 commentators) where Broad pulled out and went one-handed because he was still worried about his AC post-surgery.

Corey Ellis didn't play. Presumably flew over as 23rd man to Adelaide.
Bolton was named in the VFL squad on Thursday but of course didn't play because he's being managed as a first year player.

Corey Ellis was mentioned by the commentary team to have a corked adductor and that is why he didn't play.

VFL Tigers prevail in thriller

richmondfc.com.au
2 July 2017

Richmond 12.8-80 def Essendon 10.14-74

The VFL Tigers came up trumps in a heart-stopping clash on Saturday afternoon, overcoming Essendon by a solitary goal at Windy Hill.

With both sides inseparable for the majority of the day’s play, the VFL Tigers got a small break in the fourth quarter, and managed to hold on to the lead for a tense few minutes before a much-welcomed final siren sounded.

Taylor Hunt was a key performer, reeling in 33 disposals as well as a crucial goal in the dying stages of the game which consolidated the VFL Tigers’ grasp on the game.

Anthony Miles, Nathan Broad, Jake Batchelor, and debutant Dank Bzenic were also impressive in the victory that saw Richmond jump to fifth spot on the VFL ladder.

Richmond VFL and development coach Craig McRae said the thrilling victory was as good as any he had experienced in his time with the VFL program.

“That’s as good a win as I’ve had in the two years that I’ve been in this role”, McRae said.

“I’m really proud of the guys and their effort.

“Their ability to connect with each other and defend was fantastic.

“It was a really good performance.”

The opening stanza provided a clear reflection of how the game would eventuate, with either side able to pull clear of one another, despite impressive attacking forays at either end.

After the Bombers opened the scoring, James Fletcher provided an instant response with a classy set-shot from 25 metres out on a tough angle.

Following suit was Ryan Garthwaite, who emphatically slotted his first goal for the Club after marking strongly from 45 metres out, earning himself a swamping from his overjoyed teammates in the process.

Garthwaite didn’t wait until long after the break to remind the Bombers of his potency in the attacking third, pulling down another impressive mark and kicking truly to stem the tide of pressure coming from a rejuvenated home side.

His efforts were compounded when Max O’Sullivan added his first for the day, finding the goals after spectacularly outworking his opponent just outside of the goal square.

Going into the main break three points down on a freezing cold day in the city’s north, the VFL Tigers had a huge task ahead of them, facing a side who had 19 AFL-listed players on the ground.

However, even with the odds stacked against them, Richmond VFL produced a gritty, determined second half performance to seal a memorable four points.

Though the Bombers took the lead in the third quarter, the VFL Tigers were rewarded for their persistence when Jack Graham produced a gut-busting run and classy finish to reduce the deficit to under a goal.

The spotlight then came to Bzenic, who, on his first appearance in the yellow and black, unleashed a lethal snap finish to give the lead back to the travellers as the intensity grew across the ground.

Mabior Chol and Ryan Bathie then notched their first and second goals respectively to open up a two-goal lead as the third term came to a close.

With the home side’s supporters not showing any desire to have premiership points dropped on their home turf, the Bombers came out with two quick-fire goals to swing the contest back in their favour at the start of the final quarter.

Bzenic popped up again with a second goal to take back the lead, however, in a see-sawing contest, the Bombers welcomed a 50 metre penalty and made no mistake from close range.

With the two-pronged defensive juggernaut of Batchelor and Broad working overtime to deny the home side a foothold in the contest, Jayden Cass made the most of a rare venture inside 50 to dribble home his effort from 30 metres out.

Then, with the game in the balance, Hunt showed all his experience and guile with a superb set shot from 45 metres out to extend the VFL Tigers lead to eight points in the dying embers of the game.

Batchelor and Broad were again instrumental in the siege that followed, repelling waves of attack as the Bombers desperately tried to claw their way back into the game.

With the travelling Tiger fans begging for the siren to sound, the fourth quarter finally came to a close, sparking wild celebrations on and off the ground as the VFL Tigers sealed one of their most important victories of season 2017.

Now with three consecutive victories to boot, the VFL Tigers face Casey at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Recreation Reserve next Saturday.

The match will commence at 1:00pm.

I'd bring in either him or Miles in for Prestia...

Craig McRae's summary of our AFL-listed players from Saturday’s Round 11 VFL win over Essendon.

AFL LISTED PLAYERS

Taylor Hunt

33 disposals, five marks, three tackles, one goal.

Continues his great form at VFL level. He’s been one of our best players in recent weeks and today he really looked strong off half-back and used the ball really well. A complete game from him.

Anthony Miles

33 disposals, six clearances, four marks, three tackles.

Continues to play great football, with disposal numbers over thirty. Both his contested and outside ball was really strong. A terrific game.

Jacob Townsend

25 disposals, nine tackles, five clearances, one mark.

Played mostly midfield and a bit of forward. Hard at the ball and that showed with his tackle count. He competed hard for us, and was a really important player on the day.

Nathan Broad

22 disposals six marks, two tackles.

Started down back, and was very solid, hardly letting his man get a touch. We moved him forward for a bit, and he impacted that part of the game too. A really solid performer with over 20 possessions.

Jack Graham

17 disposals, eight tackles, six clearances, one goal.

Played his first full game. Had excellent balance with his clearances and tackles and covered the ground well with his hard running. A very important player.

Jake Batchelor

14 disposals, two marks, two tackles.

Played down back for the whole game. Ebbed and flowed in terms of impacting the game, but when the game was on the line in the last quarter, he was a rock, and they couldn’t get past him. An integral part of the result.

Ryan Garthwaite

11 disposals, five marks, three tackles, two goals.

Played the game as a forward for the second week in a row. He impacted the scoreboard well this week which was pleasing to see. Looks promising in that role.

Ivan Soldo

Six disposals, 25 hitouts, four tackles, two marks.

Played mainly in the ruck. Probably had the most hitouts he’s had in a while, against quality opposition in Leuenberger and McKernan. His contested marks were a feature as well.

Mabior Chol

Five disposals, three marks, one goal.

Played in the backline for the first half, and we moved him forward for the second. Kicked a nice goal at an important stage of the game. The ability to play at both ends is going to be integral for his future.

Ivan Maric

Five disposals, 18 hitouts, three clearances, two tackles.

Played ruck and forward this week. Didn’t impact the scoreboard, but he was another that played his role with his hitouts and clearances, which was vital in the game.

We seem to really throw our KPP's around at this level and it's been happening for years.
Is there any reason why we do it do you think?

Surely it's hard for a kid to come in and try to get some consistency only to be thrown around like we do.

Does anyone know if Moore is a forward or a backman?
Chol?
Elton?
And now they seem to be doing it with Garthwaite.

I like it in theory but the you'd think the proof is in the pudding, it hasn't worked. You could (maybe) argue Rance to a degree moved around a little but not to the extent the kids have been lately.

Anyone know if it happens like this at other clubs and what their success has been like?
