I remember reading this and mates picking up and running with this sentiment which really peed me off.  2 in 3 years in an 18 team competition is no fluke and if we win another we should be regarded as one of the better teams of the modern era.

He's explained this multiple times and knowing him personally, it was not a dig. In hindsight, it was an inaccurate comment anyway as that side had a lot of talent despite the fact that several of that premiership side are now on the verge of flaming out of the AFL within 1-2 years.

Who are these several?

16/22 from 2017 backed it up in 2019. Of the 6 who missed you got grigg who retired and graham and rance who were ruled out by injury. The only 3 who lost their place were Townsend, butler and McIntosh and Towner is the only one who may not be on an afl list come next season.

I liked him on Footy Classified -had good opinions on the game and gave Caro's self-righteous school marm routine the short shrift it deserved. Rather have people like him at the AFL than the pc limpdicks, accountants and soulless corporate drones that are running it now. :shh

As for his comments on us - as I've said before , would rather be the worst side to win a flag than the best side not to...though I wish everyone, including the club itself , would stop promoting this "system over talent" line so heavily, even if it is partially true...then maybe our lesser premiership players would attract more interest & better offers during trade week..also didn't help matters when Jack Riewoldt himself kept saying "we're not the most talented list" in every interview from round 23 through to the GF and after back in 2017... :shh :shh

Occasionally had a good take but generally was well out of his depth IMO.

There's always NRL to follow along if that's how you feel. As much as we gripe and groan about the operations of the AFL, they are the envy of professional sports worldwide and shyte on just about every other major sport world wide. If anything, they cowtail to the non-pc "I like me beer cold and me tv loud" punters too much.

Would any of the players we have traded recently received anything like the returns we got for them if we hadn't won flags (aside from Corey Ellis and Miles trades, which were an extension of the Lynch deal)?

Our list is full of champions, and they haven't really improved all that much since 2017.
Vlastuin, Grimes, Prestia, Edwards, Astbury, Houli, Rioli, Caddy, Nankervis, Lambert and Graham are pretty much playing at the same level that they were in late 2017. A brash take that hasn't really analysed our team might say they are nobodies. But lets be honest, any one of those guys would have been worshipped as a Richmond journeyman 10 years ago. Nothing can excuse that take from Thomas but sloppy journalism at best and  Ricky Nixon esque tall poppy at worst.

[1965]It's kowtow not cowtail[/1965] :shh...but yes, perish the thought that there's a still a large segment of the great unwashed who just want to watch football and forget about the troubles of the world, work and the week for a couple of hours and not be lectured about & reminded of them by their social betters such as you- let alone have them expecting a full body contact sport played by grown men of their own volition to be tough, hard and even occasionally violent with little regard to delicate middle-class sensibilities....oh the humanity ... :shh :shh

..and if you think Lewis Taylor is worth 8 picks higher than Dan Butler and McIntosh - who was second and one vote of first in the B&F after 8 rounds - isn't even worth a half-decent offer, then all I can say is good luck and good day to you sir... :shh :shh  :shh

The only list that someone could argue is more talented than ours is GWS and their talent was handed to them on a silver platter. Although props to them for developing and retaining them for the most part unlike the Suns.

It is kowtow, thank you for the correction.  :thumbsup

"social betters", pfft!? What is that, Nietzsche?

There is a certainly irony to you swinging class politics in my face, but anyway. Football sets the bar high(er than the MINIMUM expected) in regards to social decorum, and it has enjoyed a tremendous increase in following and support since it has made the switch more tangible. Whatever, its a good thing. It helps people understand that their beer swilling, repugnancy no longer has a place in football as it hurts the brand. So accuse them (the AFL) of being brand managers and I'll agree wholeheartedly. But if the consequence is that people think twice before hurling vile abuse or posting some abhorance online without anonymity because the "white shirts" went and got "PC" then that's more than fine with me. Go and tune into the MMA, and watch the blood splatter all over the floor if that's what you need to escape.

This is confusing. What I think and what Grant Thomas thinks were the points of debate here. I'm not sure what Sydney's valuation of players has to do with anything. (Although I personally think Lewis Taylor was a steal.) But there are so many other factors at play when exchanging a player for a draft pick than a reductive quid pro quo summation.

But I'll finish by saying how many clubs would have been able to trade their 5th rated small forward who was taken 11 picks later than the pick he was traded for? And how many supporters would be banging on about it in supporter forums about how we got ripped off? Who cares, this isn't the topic of conversation anyway.

We had champion players everywhere in 2017. Grant is just another naysayer that can't handle what we have become and so expresses some word vomit on twitter and then demands that we stop accosting him and interpret it as a complement. Hurry, get him to AFL house....

i reckon what it says is yes a lot of our players are not champions and most just perform a role.
What they get wrong the media and oppo supporters  imo, is just perhaps players at other clubs are exactly the same and perhaps looked upon as being better when they are not. Every single team has it fair share of lets call em role players for harmony.
Funny thing is when it comes to our own we act exactly the same way.

Our top end talent is as good as anyones and we have one of the best spines going around. We have our share of b/c graders as well. But our botton 6 or so are as replaceable as anyone elses.

We aint perfect and we should be doing whatever it takes to be better and to stay in front of the pack.
