Richmond's Already Broken Their Membership Record And It's Bloody February

The 2018 home and away season is still over a month away, but that hasn't stopped the Richmond train from rolling on.

Official AFL data showed the Tigers breaking their membership record once again in 2017, recording 72,699 members for the year.

This year? They've already caught it.

Numbers published on Richmond's website have them clocking in at 74,699 members, already more than they've ever recorded.

It leaves them poised to break the all-time AFL record, held by Collingwood, who recorded 79,347 members in 2014.

Richmond president Peggy O'Neal has said the club is hunting for a whopping - and unprecedented - 90,000 members in 2018.

"Clearly the success this season is going to drive a significant off-field result, some of which will flow into next year's financial figures," she told News Corp last year.

"We also expect this season will fuel next year, and there is no reason why we shouldn't be aiming to be the first club through 90,000 members."

Richmond's membership by year:

2010: 35,960

2011: 47,655

2012: 53,027

2013: 60,321

2014: 66,122

2015: 70,809

2016: 72,278

2017: 72,669

2018: 74,699*

I won’t renew till I get what I ordered the day after the GF

This might seem petty and it’s cost me my 3121 membership, but it’s principal for me

Wow, that is ridiculous. I thought I was an orphan waiting until late January to get my stuff, but seriously, if you still haven't got yours then I think you are totally justified.

I don't think it is fair that it cost you a 3121 membership however. I think you should write to Peggy or Brendan and explain what has happened and ask for them to reinstate your membership when/if you decide to join back up.

Richmond’s hunt for 90,000 members in 2018 has been given a boost, with the Club breaking its membership record today.

Ticking over to 75,803 members this morning, the Tigers surged past its previous record of 75,777 achieved at the end of Richmond’s 2017 finals campaign, making it the eighth consecutive year the Club has achieved record membership.

Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale said it was exciting to achieve the record early in the year.

“The power and passion of the Tiger Army is something special, and it’s really exciting to have record-breaking members with us as we head into the start of a new season.”

CEO Gale explains ‘all-time’ interest in Richmond

By SEN
21 Feb 2018

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale has given some insight into how the club has again broken its own membership record.

On the back of their drought-breaking premiership triumph in 2017, the Tigers have crashed through their previous membership ceiling of 75,777.

For the eighth year in a row, the Tiger Army has voted with their feet by buying in and showing their loyalty, prompting Gale to explain why on SEN Afternoons.

“(It’s) not so much the number, I think it’s the underlying relationship with the club and its members,” he said.

“What it tells me that our members, and I know this because there’s evidence in an AFL membership satisfaction research survey, we have about 7,000 respondents every year.

“Our members are highly engaged and there’s high trust.

“By and large, their experience matches expectation. If you get those things right, the number takes care of itself.

“It’s the engagement, the strength of the connection, the trust and the buy-in.”

Adding further to Richmond’s off-field success, Head of Marketing Ben Jenkins said: “The interest in the club is at an all-time high.

“In terms of the numbers, they are going really well. We did announce this morning that we’ve broken the all-time club membership record for the eighth consecutive year, which is huge.

“Never this early though. We’ve just pushed through 75,777 which is a credit to everyone involved at the club – from the players, coaches and on-field success last year – but everyone that’s worked off the field so hard to create the momentum and connection between the club and the fans.”
