The question actually applies to all clubs that have more members than their home ground can cater for

The Eagles cap theirs. Once they reach a certain number of members, you have to join a waiting list called "Waiting in the wings". If there is a fee to join the waiting list, it is minimal.

At least, that was the case when they played out of Subi, but I think it does still apply.

I don't want to sound like a smart arse, but I got both my kids an RFC membership from they day they were born. I did it so that if my brainwashing efforts prevented them from switching to the Eagles or Dockers (we live in WA), they would have that membership if the Tigers ever sold out of memberships, and so that when they were older, they might get to go to a Grand Final. Living in WA I have seen first hand what limited numbers of memberships being available can mean to fans.

My son is now 15 and is a gold member with 15 years continuous membership. When I first got it for him, my mates fairly gave it to me. As if any Victorian club was going to sell out the MCG with memberships they all said. But when I first got it, that membership cost me under $20 for the whole 11 home games. I told all my WA mates about it, and that maybe they should at least get their kids in the waiting queue for Eagles memberships. None did to my knowledge, and their kids now will be waiting well into adulthood to get a membership, if they ever get one.

And my son, on the other hand, got to see his side win a Grandfinal last year.

I knew I had made the right decision when a mate came up to me at a BBQ a few weeks after the grandfinal. Recalling my advice of years before and knowing that my son and I had just seen our team win a flag he said to me "Well played Dad".

I think we need to start selling a different range of memberships
We could have a

Dreamtime Membership - Dreamtime + 3 games
Anzac Eve Membership - Which all ready exists
Season Opener Membership - Access to R1 v Carlton + 3 games
Blockbuster Membership - Access to home games vs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn with Reserved Seating on the Day
Interstate Membership - Home Games vs any 3 of the Interstate Teams
LOLNorf & Other Riff Raff Club Games Membership - Entry to games against Norf, St Kilda, Melbourne, Footscray etc etc.

All these can be on top of the traditional stuff we sell now. As someone said before - Not everyone goes to games, Not everyone
goes to all Home games. I reckon we could get to 120,000 memberships by doing this type of stuff.

We already do, usually starts selling a couple of weeks before the game

Season Opener Membership - Access to R1 v Carlton + 3 games

Would only work when it is our home game

Blockbuster Membership - Access to home games vs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn with Reserved Seating on the Day

Again would only work for our home games. Though would question the reserve seat aspect, where would they be? Club already has all the prime reserve seating and it's all sold

My reason for asking about do we cap is because we currently have 87k+ members

We play at a stadium that holds 100,024. Of that 100k, about 45k+ seats are for MCC & AFL members, so those seats are never available. Of our 87k members say 25k-30k (not sure just a rough guess) are reserved seats for our members - people chose not to go and very few of them can be used by other people so those seats are basically not available on match days.

MCC and AFL will require that a certain number of seats are available to the general public other club supporters....

We can offer as many membership categories we like but it's still a concern to me at least that we can not cater for all of our members at every home game

I suppose then a cap should happen. 100,024 is the logical number for the cap and the club can work it out from there, but I will say
its terrific weve come this far, from the days when we had 10,000-12,000 members to this. Its outstanding, who would have thought that one day we would out grow the MCG.

At least, that was the case when they played out of Subi, but I think it does still apply.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett revealed that almost 6000 of the Eagles’ In The Wings members had been allocated seats at Optus Stadium after waiting up to 15 years for a membership. But there were still 9000 households on the waiting list and he said they were likely to continue the allocation program into the opening rounds of the season.

He predicted new three-game and five-game memberships to become hot-ticket items as fans looked for more flexibility and said seats with restricted viewing would be sold at lower prices.

Mr Nisbett also expected remaining In The Wings members to be able to buy tickets as part of the 6000-seat daily passes to be made available as well as through the resale program.

“We’ve got a lot of disgruntled people who haven’t been offered seats yet and we’ll probably exhaust our supply before we get to the end of the In The Wings members,” he said. “But there are still opportunities for them, so I hope they stick with us.”

There maybe a need to cap ticketed members but no need to limit actual memberships of the club. Plenty of people living outside Melbourne who cannot get to all 11 home games but still want to be a member.

Just have to build packages with things that they cannot experience live. Like live internet coverage of open training sessions and VFL games only accessible via registered member status. Similar to the firewalls to restrict content like those put up by the HUN

Some people may get a 3 game membership, use it up early and get another one.

I have the country 5 game, if I used mine up, i'd get a second one.
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
