Yeah well they're both mid -20's and we won't be winning a flag in the next 5 years so they'll do for now while we stock up on picks and salary cap for draft and trade/FA targets.

I think you could in theory play 4 of them down back provided they are agile/nimble enough to rotate on smalls as well and get the job done at ground level. Remember through our dynasty years we had rance/balta, grimes, astbury, broad, throw in vlas too as a medium.

Yep Grimes and Broad were very good like that.

We don't have anything similar coming through.

Bauer = Grimes.  Trezise more like Broad or Vlastuin. Trezise is good in the air.

Prefer we play Bauer as our third med/tall  forward though.

Right thru 2017 - 2020 we had two big kpd Rance Astbury then Balta Astbury. the two mobile  talls Broad 192 and Grimes 193.
Both could play smaller in fact most of Grimes best games was against very dangerous small forwards. Broad supplied a surprising amount of run and rebound.Vlastuin intercept accountable medium Houli and Now rioli for run.

SPOILS

5th - Ben Miller (Richmond) - 126

Ben Miller was thrown around in his 25 games prior to the 2024 season.

He has now found himself a niche in key defence and has done a pretty good job for the struggling Tigers.

The 24-year-old’s 126 spoils ranks equal fifth in the AFL narrowly behind Tom Barrass and ahead of Jack Buckley.

Miller has been involved in 64 contested defensive one on ones and lost only 10. Only Harris Andrews and Sam Collins have won more one on ones this season.

He ranked equal 109th with 39 spoils last year.

Sort of.  I was quaffing red wine but did notice Ben mot really taking Larkey too seriously? Tried to work him under the ball to mark when leaping into the back and killing the contest were better options.
Miller has talent but in the words of Tom Hafey “he’s a back pocket plumber “.
Kill the contest and DO NOT take the kick in!
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

I think his improvement has been somewhat over stated. Not a bad player by any means, can definitely fill a role/spot during the rebuild years but strikes me as a player who in a very good side will stick out.

Tough time to be full back at punt road Royce Hart would probably leak goals

I think up until the last 3-4 weeks he's been very good. But his form has fallen away which is disappointing

But still think year on year he's improved

He’s not great 1v1 but half the goals kicked on him today were from midfield turnovers that completely exposed our defence.

I reckon even the god-like Alex Rance would've coughed 3 or 4 today ...     :P

100% correct. Will remain borderline for me until he gets better in this.
Lots to like in most other area can only hope the trend continues upwards.

No theory we used to do it as ive pointed out for years. Not just us you only need look at how the majority of teams in the comp structure up in the back half.  Rance, Astbury, Grimes and Broad  with the big bodied medium in Vlastuin there as well. Rance went in came Balta.
Astbury went we have Miller. We have drafted a beaut kpd in Gibcus.

Imo Gibcus and Balta should be our kpd set up. The question for me is weather Miller or Bauer is the third tall.
Bauer looks like he can play on all types to me, a bit like Grimes. Weather he ends up being good enough is what we need to find out.

Brown, Smith Trezise Banks there is some promise there to go with the big fellas. Even have some depth for the talls with Blight and Young.

Would be very tempted to see what Blight can offer as a forward. Shame Gray is injured.

Ball came inside 50 like a training drill most times. Hard to defend non existent midfield pressure on the i50 kick.
