Tigers land first Academy selection

Richmond has secured its first Next Generation Academy Program selection, drafting Mildura product Derek Eggmolesse-Smith as a Category B rookie.

Eggmolesse-Smith, 19, came to the Club’s attention in 2014 when he commenced Phase 1 of the Korin Gamadji Institute’s Richmond Emerging Aboriginal Leadership (REAL) Program.

The former Bendigo Pioneer and Wentworth District footballer is also a product of the highly successful Laguntas program, which has seen nine participants drafted to AFL clubs since its inception in 2012.

An exciting and quick defender, Eggmolesse-Smith then joined the Tigers Next Generation Academy Program, following its launch in 2016.

He trained with the VFL Tigers this year and played five matches for Craig McRae’s side.

Richmond’s general manager – football talent Dan Richardson officially welcomed Eggmolesse-Smith to the Club following today’s 2018 Rookie Draft.

“We have invested significantly in our Academy zone and Derek’s selection is a credit to our club and its centre for Indigenous youth, the Korin Gamadji Institute,” Richardson said.

“Derek is a talented Indigenous footballer who has gone from strength to strength since he became engaged in our NGA and VFL programs.

“This reinforces that our Academy provides a genuine pathway for Indigenous and multicultural boys and girls to play elite football.”

Richmond’s NGA further builds on the connection the Korin Gamadji Institute (KGI) has created with regional Victorian Aboriginal communities.

Richmond’s NGAP region includes AFL Central Vic, Central Murray, Goulburn Murray, North East Border and Sunraysia– the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers catchments.

The Program, in conjunction with the above partners, introduces the game of Australian Rules to both boys and girls, aged 5-18 years, who are from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds. It aims to create a culturally affirming environment in order for them to thrive in the talent pathway.

Why is he cat B?

CLUBS will be able to select overlooked indigenous and multicultural prospects at this year's NAB AFL Draft as category B rookies as the AFL looks to fast-track its next generation academy program.

The AFL informed clubs last week it had broadened its academy rules to allow them to select players under the new system this year in a bid to "achieve the outcome of greater diversity" on lists.

Under the revised rules, clubs will be able to apply for 2016 draft-eligible players to qualify as talent concessions under the next generation academy rules.

If the AFL decides that the player meets the qualifications under the indigenous or multicultural eligibility, the club will be able to list the player as a category B rookie, but only if the player is not selected in the national or rookie drafts.

Because he’s from our academy.

Talented half-back flanker Derek Eggmolesse-Smith will make his senior debut for Richmond in Saturday afternoon’s match against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

Eggmolesse-Smith, 180cm and 80kg, was the first player drafted under Richmond’s Next Generation Academy program when he was selected in the 2018 Rookie Draft.

The 21-year-old has been promoted to the senior side following impressive recent VFL form, where he is averaging 19 disposals per game.

A Mildura product, the zippy defender’s pinpoint left-foot kick is one of his biggest strengths.

Recently retired premiership Tiger Shaun Grigg spoke highly of Eggmolesse-Smith’s progress in a recent edition of Talking Tigers, praising his work ethic and professionalism.

“He’s been super again this year,” Grigg said.

“He backs himself in, takes them on, and the defensive side of his game is good.”

Eggmolesse-Smith has been promoted from Richmond's Category B Rookie List to the Primary List as a replacement for Alex Rance, with Rance placed on the Long Term Injury List.

Don't think he's ever played forward in the VFL so you'd think they'll be shifting Edwards or maybe even Short forward.... :shh

Floss into the midfield would allow Eggy to play in defence.
