Injury update [merged]
« on: December 05, 2017, 12:48:34 PM »
Injury update from Peter Burge:

Kane Lambert had very minor knee surgery and resumed running about four weeks ago. So he’s going great at the moment and will resume training this week, once he’s back from Tasmania with the young guys.

Dion Prestia had very minor ankle surgery post-season and has resumed running. He’s been running now for about four weeks, but we’ll progress his program really carefully and have him in with the main group post-Christmas at this stage.

Jayden Short and Oleg Markov both had shoulder surgeries and are in the ‘rehab’ group at the moment. No contact skills for them at this stage, but they’re doing plenty of conditioning . . . They’ll do some no-contact skills in the next two to three weeks.”

Medical room: Who's on the injury list at your club?

RICHMOND

Premiership midfielder Dion Prestia is due to resume full training after Christmas as he recovers from planned ankle surgery after carrying an injury through the 2017 season. He is running and taking part in some non-contact drills.

Young star Daniel Rioli, who suffered a broken foot in the final quarter of the Grand Final, is out of a moonboot and completing a rehab program, which includes cross training and weights. He is on track to start running early in the new year, but in some doubt for round one.

While Kane Lambert underwent post-season knee surgery, he was able to join a young group of Tigers for a hiking trip in Tasmania and resumed running four weeks ago.

Defenders Jayden Short, Oleg Markov and David Astbury all underwent post-season shoulder surgery and are on modified training, running laps early in the pre-season and avoiding all contact drills.

Rule them out for round one:

Burge said young midfielder Nathan Drummond was on track to start full skills work by the start of February as he recovers from a second knee reconstruction, with the 23-year-old pushing to be available for round one selection.

Ruckman Shaun Hampson is also on a modified program at the moment as he manages a back issue that restricted him for the majority of 2017.

"We're expecting him to come back to football (drills) really soon," Burge said.

Race to round one: Who's injured at your club?

RICHMOND

While the Tigers had a slew of post-season surgeries, their rehab group has whittled down significantly in recent weeks. Dion Prestia (ankle), Kane Lambert (knee), and Jayden Short, Oleg Markov and David Astbury (all shoulders) have recovered from surgery and will be available for round one barring any setbacks. Ruckman Shaun Hampson continues to battle with a back complaint, however, and it is difficult to see him featuring in the early rounds.

Rule him out:
Shaun Hampson, back, TBC

Racing to be ready:
Premiership forward Daniel Rioli is still on modified training after surgery to repair a broken foot at the end of last season and in doubt for round one. He completed his first running session at the end of January and is being re-educated on his running technique after such a long period off legs. The 20-year-old recently had follow-up surgery to remove a plate from his foot, with coach Damien Hardwick committed to taking a conservative approach with his rehab.

INJURY LIST

Daniel Rioli (foot)

Toby Nankervis (concussion)

Nathan Broad (club suspension)

Shaun Hampson (back)

Nathan Drummond (knee)

Toby Nankervis suffered concussion in the Tigers’ big win over Essendon in Wangaratta on Saturday and played no further part in the match. Richmond’s second JLT game isn’t until March 7, so the ruckman should be OK to play again before Round 1. The biggest concern is Daniel Rioli, who is back running after surgery on the foot he hurt in the Grand Final win, but is only an outside chance of playing in Round 1. Shaun Hampson remains on a modified program and Nathan Drummond is increasing his workload as he aims to make a comeback from a second knee reconstruction.

INJURY LIST

Daniel Rioli (foot)

Toby Nankervis (concussion)

Nathan Broad (club suspension)

Shaun Hampson (back)

Nathan Drummond (knee)

Not much to report for the Tigers, with everything seemingly going swimmingly at Punt Road.

The Tigers face the Kangaroos on Wednesday. Toby Nankervis suffered concussion in the big win over Essendon in Wangaratta but should be OK to return.

The biggest concern remains Daniel Rioli, who is back running after surgery on the foot he hurt in the Grand Final win. But he is only an outside chance of playing in Round 1. Shaun Hampson remains on a modified program and Nathan Drummond is increasing his workload as he aims to make a comeback from a second knee reconstruction.

Hardwick said Prestia and Houli were touch and go for round one.

Prestia suffered a minor hamstring injury in mid-February but is yet to play and could now miss the season opener as the Tigers take a cautious approach with the midfielder.

"He's touch and go at the moment," Hardwick said. "We're confident, but we just want to make sure. He's such an important player for us.

"This time of year everyone wants to be ready for round one, but we've just got to make sure those guys are ready for a long season. It's an endurance race."

Richmond's premiership stars in a race against the clock

Georgie Dennis -
zerohanger.com
15 March 2018

Richmond‘s Bachar Houli and Dion Prestia are running out of time to be fit for their round one clash against Carlton in a week’s time.

The pair have been battling soft tissue injuries over the preseason to the calf (Houli) and hamstring (Prestia).

While they are making good progress and have pushed to be ready for their season opener it is unlikely the Tigers will take any risks with their premiership heroes.

“We have still got several training sessions to go. We haven’t given up on either of them, but we will be conservative with them,” Richmond footy boss Neil Balme told heraldsun.com.au.

“They are both keen to play but we won’t be taking any risks with them. Dion slightly hurt himself, then slightly hurt it again.

“That might count against him. We don’t want to take any risks.”

Richmond will also be without Daniel Rioli who still hasn’t recovered from the foot fracture he suffered in the Grand Final and Nathan Broad who is under a club suspension.

Rioli’s likely replacement is small forward Shai Bolton who is coming into his second AFL season and Jayden Short or Reece Conca could come in for Broad.

Broad is suspended for the first three rounds of the season in the wake of the topless female photo scandal.

He is allowed to play in the VFL, however their season doesn’t kick off until April 1.

In the meantime, he is expected to play VFL practice matches along with the rest of his Richmond teammates not selected in the senior team.

Shaun Hampson is the other Tiger who is unlikely to be fit for round one with the ruckman suffering and ongoing back complaint and needing another epidural to ease the pain.

Despite a few injury niggles, Balme believes the Tigers have put in a good pre-season.

“We are in good shape. Only Shaun Hampson hasn’t done that much. He is getting more work done on his back,” Balme added.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update on the injury status of Dion Prestia, Bachar Houli, Shaun Hampson, Daniel Rioli and Nathan Drummond.

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2018-03-16/injury-update-prestia-houli-rioli

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dion Prestia

“Dion had his ankle surgery pre-Christmas and resumed training with the group in January and then just had a little minor hamstring injury just before the JLT series. So he’s back training with the group now and we’re just yet to determine whether he’s ready to go next week or not.”

Bachar Houli

“Bachar had been training well. He just pulled up a little bit sore after the game against Essendon in Wangaratta, but he was back with the group today doing footy training and like Dion we’re just going to determine over the next couple of days his availability for next week, but it’s looking really positive.”

Shaun Hampson

“Shaun’s had a longer-term disc injury and has needed some management over time. He played games towards the end of last season and did really well. And we just managed his pre-season again. He’s now resuming skills as of Sunday with the group and will progress over the next week and then we’ll determine when he’s able to play.”

Daniel Rioli

“Daniel looks great. Daniel’s had a good couple of weeks of running. He’s now not just jogging, he’s actually running and doing strides. Given the time he’s had out, we’re still going to be very careful with the time-frame and how much conditioning he needs before we can resume football, but the great thing is he looks balanced, his gait is looking really good, and we’ll just keep progressing that . . . progressing his speed, and get some real pre-season conditioning into him before we progress into skills.”

Nathan Drummond

“It’s been a long preparation for him coming off his ACL. He’s been training with the main group now for around four weeks, doing full contact drills, changing direction, running flat out, and our plan for him is to return the week of AFL Round 2, obviously probably through the VFL. So that’s only a week and a half away, which is fantastic news."
