RICHMOND has launched an audacious play to move seven spots up the AFL draft order to secure one of the best midfielders in the 2018 pool.
With live trading introduced for the first time this year, the Tigers are believed to be considering a deal in order to secure Vic Metro MVP Bailey Smith.
Foxfooty.com.au understands the Tigers are monitoring a situation that could see the midfielder slip down to Port Adelaide’s Pick 10, which may open the door for the Tigers to jump up the draft order.
Richmond currently holds Pick 17 and has the capability to trade its future first-round pick. A deal would likely only get done if the Tigers could satisfy the Power and if the Power weren’t locked in to the Sandringham Dragons leader with their second pick.
There is belief around the industry that the key to unlocking such a deal is the first move between the GWS Giants and the Western Bulldogs.
Both clubs are set to orchestrate a pick swap, which would see the Giants trade up to secure Pick 7 and the Bulldogs trade back to either Pick 9 or 11.
If it is the latter, the Tigers would elect to swoop and try and do a deal with the Power to take Smith.
It’s understood the Giants have put in ample time and research into Smith, who’s one of the draft class’ most dedicated trainers and top midfield prospects.
But it’s also believed the Giants are eyeing off Vic Country midfielder Jye Caldwell, who could be available at Pick 7, with several sources suggesting the top six is likely locked in.
Adelaide has also been fans of Caldwell, but may look to grab Tasmanian on-baller Chayce Jones with Pick 8.
The Western Bulldogs would be more likely to want to grab Pick 9 rather than 11, not leaving the Tigers an opportunity to deal with the Power.
