I used to love trade talk but now's there's too much of it.  In particular it's too early.

How about we just comment on the games coming up

* McClure still thinks Lynch will end up at Richmond and that's been the opinion of the footy community over the past two months.

* Roughead while injured went up to the Gold Coast and met with Lynch personally two weeks ago. Just goes to show what lengths clubs will go to chase a player and they do their due diligence and never give up until that player signs a contract.

* After the meeting, Hawthorn are of the opinion Lynch with be at Richmond.

So nothing has changed from what we knew ::).

Jarryd Roughead meets with Lynch on Gold Coast

By Sam McClure
The Age
4 September 2018

Richmond’s reported mortgage on departing Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch hasn’t stopped Hawthorn in its quest to lure the star free agent, with details emerging of a recent meeting between Lynch and Hawks captain Jarryd Roughead.

The Age has learned that Roughead reached out to Lynch when he was on the Gold Coast two weeks ago and the pair caught up, but Hawthorn have now privately all but conceded that Lynch will be a Tiger in 2019.

It’s unclear why Roughead was in Queensland at the time, but it was during a two week period where the Hawks’ skipper didn’t play due to injury.

While several reports have declared Lynch a certainty to pick Richmond as his club of choice, the meeting with Roughead would suggest Lynch was still contemplating his future as recently as a fortnight ago.

Lynch attended the Suns’ best and fairest on the weekend, which was won by veteran Jarrod Harbrow ahead of midfielder Touk Miller and recruit Lachie Weller.

Lynch will leave the Suns a two time best and fairest winner and an All Australian, kicking 254 goals in his 131 games.

Despite the approach from Roughead, one of Hawthorn’s most decorated and distinguished players, the Tigers remain in the box seat to snare Lynch once their season is complete.

Richmond has recently re-negotiated the contracts of three of their stars Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt to insure they have enough salary cap space for Lynch, who is likely to sign a six or seven year contract with his next club.

Lynch was courted by coach Damien Hardwick and senior players including Cotchin, Rance, Riewoldt and Dustin Martin at a dinner several weeks ago and Hardwick’s house.

Barrett tonight claiming Clarkson won't give up on Lynch and Hawthorn are now organising/sending a group of ex-champions including Shane Crawford to convince Lynch to choose Hawthorn over Richmond.

Crawford was on the panel and gave every answer: "It's rubbish"; "Ummm, ah, ummm, ah ...."; "I've got amnesia"; "If Tom Lynch is watching Hawthorn is a great and professional club".

Barrett also said Collingwood isn't out of it as they haven't been told by Lynch's manager that they are out of it but they are a clear third behind Richmond who are ahead with Hawthorn second and closing.

The Suns stand to benefit from the system again this year, albeit in a more direct manner, when Tom Lynch signs what is expected to be one of the AFL’s richest contracts with the Richmond Tigers.

Gold Coast already hold pick No.2 in the draft and a compensation pick for Lynch will slot in at No.3.

Lynch to be a Tiger

By Michael Gleeson
The Age
5 September 2018 — 5:42pm

The race for free agent Tom Lynch is over with the Gold Coast Suns captain making his decision to go to Richmond.

It is understood both Hawthorn and Collingwood have been told they have missed out on the most wanted out of contract player this off-season.

Both clubs were told that if they had other priorities in the trade market they should focus their energies elsewhere.

The move to tell the clubs leaves the Tigers as the destination for the full forward.

Lynch is expected to earn less at any of the three big Victorian clubs than would have been available to him to stay at the Suns but he had decided he wanted to return to Victoria. He was already being paid more than a million dollars a year at the Gold Coast.

No official announcement on where he wants to sign is expected to be made until after the finals, or after Richmond have finished in the finals, which is likely to be one and the same thing with the top of the ladder Tigers expected to make the grand final.

Hawthorn and Collingwood both pushed hard to secure Lynch with Nathan Buckley and the Collingwood leaders meeting with him at his parents' home at Blairgowrie.

The Hawks captain Jarryd Roughead also flew to the Gold Coast during the end of season bye to meet with Lynch and put the case to him to choose the Hawks. Alastair Clarkson was understood to be in regular phone contact with Lynch in the Hawks' push to claim his signature.

Richmond were expected to be Lynch's destination from a long way out. Clubs believed he had most likely made his mind up some time ago but both Collingwood and Hawthorn pushed hard to persuade the full forward.

Richmond had been confident of their case and had said they didn't want to know of Lynch's decision until after the finals and it is uncertain if they have officially been told yet by his management company that they are the club of choice. By elimination with the other clubs being told they are out, it is clear Lynch will head to Punt Road.

After undergoing season-ending PCL surgery at the end of the year Lynch told the Gold Coast a month ago he was going to exercise his free agent's rights and would leave the club.

That prompted the club to strip him of the captaincy.

“The club will continue to assist Tom with his rehabilitation from injury, however he won’t be part of the football program for the remainder of the season," Gold Coast Suns chief executive Mark Evans said in a statement at the time.

“Tom understands all the mechanics of being a restricted free agent, which ultimately can’t come to a conclusion until October. Importantly for us we still have four matches to play this season and our focus is on continuing to build an environment and game plan that will set us up for the future.”

From memory Maclure has always put Richmond in front regarding Lynch.
